If this Straight Outta Compton movie pops off like its tracking then imagine what they could do with the Def Jam and Rush Management early years. It would need a HBO or Netflix series to do it justice. Twelve one hour episodes.
RUN DMC, Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, LL, EPMD, Slick Rick, yada yada yada. Of course we would scrutinize all the castings and who was left out and blah blah blah. I guess they would need everyone to sign off. But, it could be awesome.
It was all a dream.
That's actually a really good idea. What do you think it should be called?

Paul's boutique era. Sort of cross between Almost Famous, Entourage and Wild Style.

Haha. Second season!
I really want RUN DMC to be the starting point with Rick and Rush. Then the rest of the Rush Def Jam crew. Krush Groove didn't do it right. Tougher Than Leather had it's moments. I'd like to see it done right. Like, the opposite of Empire.
They could show the NYC hip-hop scene in it's golden years. The LQ, The Fever, Danceteria, CBGB and other landmarks. The Raising Hell tour, Beastie drama in the UK, etc.

The Hip Hop Family Tree comic book does a pretty amazing job of telling the Def Jam story as well as ALL of the hip hop stories leading up to and around the Def Jam movement.
Plus, according to the "about the artist" blurb in the back of the 3rd collection, the movies rights have been sold already.

Was Sal, disco FEVER or FEVER RECORDS mentioned?

Krush Groove was ok for it's time but it didn't tell the true story. Sheila E is not part of the Def Jam story. Fat Boys included.

Yep. I don't have it in front of me, but I'd guess Sal and the FEVER show up close to times in the first 3 volumes. If not more.

Yeah I'm all set with 40 year olds playing teenagers. This isn't Wet Hot American Summer.

The demand just isn't there to warrant the cost of a move like that. There's millions of kids dressing like LA hoodrats from 1990 right now. Avant garde punks from Manhattan, not so much.

Straight Outta Compton doubled what the were predicting the first week.
The demand is now proven. Hollywood will definitely try to capitalize on using the same formula and ride the wave.
Old School Hip Hop radio stations are huge now. Last week proved that people want to spend their money on these type of movies. So many stories to be told. Sky is actually the limit. Look for 2Pac movie and a Notorious reboot as well.

If it wasn't for that Kevin James show, a Run DMC biopic should be called The Kings From Queens.

I don't recall them dressing like that. Certainly not in their definitive years anyways..... or, come to think of it, even in the 5 minutes they were a punk band.

Yeah, I'm all set with a rehash of that as well. Honestly, I wasn't a fan of any of the videos off HSCP2.

Don't Play No Game video was probably the most disappointing BB thing ever, esp. considering Spike was involved.

I actually wasn't a huge fan of the FFYRR video, though I enjoyed aspects of it, but I loved the DPNGTICW video. I thought it was pretty up there in music video genius. The first time I watched it, it bugged me that they kept fucking w/ the sound of the song. Then I got over it and just enjoyed it. To each his own I suppose.
p.s. An N.W.A. biopic is not really analogous to a Beastie Boys biopic, aside from the fact that they are both bands. Two totally different beasts.

For the record I still think it works better as a TV show Netflix or HBO style. A movie couldn't cover it all.

Actually they have a number of similiarities, including both being amongst the greatest hip hop acts of all time. Beastie Boys were also an early influence on NWA in addition to being sampled almost countless times on NWA/solo member albums.

Yep. That doesn't necessarily translate to a good screenplay.

The story of Def Jam is a familiar one to most hip-hop heads; Rick Rubin's NYU dorm room was the setting, while Russell Simmons came in to co-found the label. The story has been told and re-told as the influential company turned 30 years old last year and was recounted in Simmons' autobiography Life and Def: Sex, Drugs, Money, + God, co-written with Nelson George, in 2002. But now Universal Pictures is looking to turn Simmons' book into the basis of a Def Jam biopic of sorts, with Jonah Hill rumored to portray Rubin and Michael B. Jordan being considered for Russell Simmons. Things are still in the preliminary stages, however, but add another historical hip-hop story to the rumors flying in Straight Outta Compton's wake.

Don't mean to ramble but...
The main question is are there already decisions in place that would prevent the Beastie Boys' likeness from being used in any film or TV show? Would this fall into the same category as Yauch's wishes in his will to never have their music used for any product promotional or commercial use? I feel like having actors portray their likeness in a movie is just as much, if not more, a commercialization of their brand/product/history. In my opinion, if they are already working on the memoir as their own official and authorized "history companion", I think they wouldn't allow the band to be included in a Def Jam film. Amongst Yauch's wishes preventing it- I don't think they want their Def Jam/LTI years to be what the majority of the public remembers them forever for (which the movie would assure) because of how much more their career encompassed, and also the negative terms in which their relationship with Def Jam/Russell ended. Beyond that, it could end up corny so easily.
Then again- did Suge Knight and Jerry Heller get any say in if/how they were portrayed in the NWA movie?
Don't get me wrong, I would be there opening day to see a Def Jam movie. and I think Jonah Hill could really do the Rick Rubin role justice. But would it be able to happen on their terms?

its too bad that a bboys standalone biopic is unlikely to ever materialize. just not enough drama and valleys in their history to warrant a universally engaging hollywood film. no infighting, hard drug abuse, or turmoil to draw from. a def jam study is likely the closest we'll ever get.
not complaining though, a career dominated by overwhelming positivity is nothing to rue, that's for certain.

They could do a feature and focus on LTI era and PB and filling the blanks like Compton did. I dunno.
