I don't know if this has been talked about or not but I just caught it recently. I heard the Beasties bought back the rights of Fight For Your Right from Def Jam so they could kill the song. Def Jam still owns the rest of LTI but FFYR is dead. It can't be played at sporting events, movies, tv, etc. I heard the Boys wanted to buy it back just so they wouldn't have to hear it anymore.

Anyhoo, I thought it was interesting.

Wouldn't be surprised if they wanted that! Where did you hear?

I don't know if this can be related to the subject, but here in Spain there is a national rock&roll radio station, Rock FM, that plays the song almost every day.

Yeah, you can still hear it on the radio and it's still on LTI. That hasn't changed.

From what I gather the band wanted to get the rights back so Def Jam and Universal couldn't license the song for movies, tv, music compilations, video games, sporting events, yada yada. They bought back the full rights to that particular song just so they could kill it.

I always thought sporting events could play whatever music they wanted

Oh no. That's where the big money is at. There are pro marketing firms that broker deals for artists and sporting events. Thats why having the licenses to your songs are important.

Is that true for baseball? Batters and pitchers seem to have their choice of song played when they walk out. Is it because of length they're allowed to choose?

they may have a choice but the songs still need to be approved

Any song that is being played on the PA System needs to be cleared and licensed.

A lot of songs are bought in bulk and players can choose from what's on the list.

It's a complicated situation. Publishers and artists who own their music get paid for in-stadium play, while labels earn licensing fees only when the song is used for televised promos, advertising and coverage by the networks or leagues.

That said. If you hear a Beasties song at a sporting event or on TV, people are getting paid. Artists are only getting paid if they own all or a piece of their publishing.

That is really interesting and I was not aware of that (thanks).
As far as them wanting to "kill" FFYY, that sounds odd.
The group is over and the legacy of that song is etched in stone.
FFYR Revisited/Make Some Noise video seemed to reflect that they were coming to terms with the latter fact.

I'm pretty sure this all happened before Hot Sauce and Yauch's passing.
