I always dug this performance. It was a weird choice, but they sound amazing (and sloppy but in a good way) w/ Paul Scaffer's band double backing them.

Also, would have been really cool to see them do something off the Mix Up on letterman with that era's suits and style.

I agree. I used to get bummed when they would be on a show in the later years and they would do So Whatcha Want. I mean, I was always glad to see them perform, but wish they did a different song.

To be fair, they played Shazam (Conan?) on the TT5B trail.

In later years, they were mainly promoting AIFST, SGH or reissues. So it made sense to do a classic of sorts.

Regarding the Beastie Boys being accompanied by Paul Schaffer & The World's Most Dangerous Band, it came down to this. With very rare exception, the house rule on Late Night with David Letterman was that guest bands never played as a complete unit and were always backed by Paul and the house band. I don't know why this was, but that was the deal. So if, just for instance, Red Hot Chili Peppers were on, Anthony Kiedis and Flea would play with Paul and the band while Chad Smith and John Frusciante would either have to grab a tambourine and hang out while singing backup or take the night off. All three Beastie Boys getting to play their instruments, with Money Mark riding along, was a very rare occurrence and says something about both the politics behind this arrangement and their status at the time. Many a band as big or bigger didn't get the same treatment.

I always got the impression that Letterman always liked them compared to other late night hosts (with the exception of Fallon and Chris rock obviously).
