Yes Biz will be missed. The first time I saw him on mtv was something like 95 on Beavis and Butthead. They were trashing Just a Friend. Pleasantly surprised to hear Biz on Hello Nasty and anthology.

I'm glad to see a lot of obits mentioning that in addition to being the "Clown Prince of Hip-Hop", Biz was also really, really talented. He was goofier than most, but also from like 1980 to 1990, there was a lot of really goofy rap out there from legendary groups too: rap was just a lot more silly at times back then. But if you listen to tracks like "On and On," "Biz Is Goin Off," "One, Two," etc. it's clear that Biz worked really hard to actually become a good MC.
I can't find it, but there's a clip from the late 90s/early 2000s of Busta Rhymes saying in an interview "the three dopest MCs of all time are Hova, Biz Markie, and myself." Swap out Jay-Z with Cam'ron and I'm pretty much with him on that.
RIP to the B-I-Z, the mix-tape king, the self-appointed McRib of hip-hop.

I’ve been happy to see respectful (and plentiful) obituaries too. I expected them to just mention Just a Friend, but they tend to talk about how influential he was and how well loved he was. I mostly know him from all his Beastie Boys collaborations (most of which I think were just him picking up a mic in the studio and they decided to use it). Listened to a bunch of his actual music about a year ago and really enjoyed it. He beat the bboys to the limerick thing with The Dragon!

...."Clown Prince of Hip-Hop"
i never once heard this and i've followed biz through weekend warrior and beyond. i'm sure it was said and/or written but imo it just doesn't apply. yea he was a goofball but dude had mad talent. he had more and more silly cuts as the albums went on but goin off and biz never sleeps stand up to anything g rap and kane put out on cold chillin around that time. his dj sets were amazing too.
nonetheless another legend gone.

Yeah, good point of clarification: it seems like someone wrote an obit with the term (which I'd heard before, but not often) and then everyone else just decided that was his official title for some reason. Pitchfork was the only major music publication I've seen so far that didn't use the word "clown" at all. There's a lot of lazy "journalism" out there.

gotcha, i thought they implied that was his moniker throughout his career, like they put that shit on marquees and whatnot. i didn't realize someone just wrote that in an obit and everyone just ran with it. lazy indeed......

R.I.P. to the artist I've seen perform live the most without ever buying a ticket specifically to see him.
Twice with the Beasties, and once opening for Chris Rock.
