I just finished listening to the new Rick Rubin interview with Joe Rogan and it was really good.
Rick told the story about how Adrock came up with the "Let me clear my throat" on The New Style. Joe raved about how he loved Paul's Boutique even when it was first released. I had no idea Joe was a big fan... I would love if he had the boys on for 3 hours.

ha. i never listened until around '17-18, didn't even know who he was. i listened to a handful of shows during that time but it got old pretty quick. then the covid talk came and it was just too much. and i'm not down with 3+ hour podcasts, i'd rather put the godfather on and listen to that. like drink champs; i tried to get through the ghost/raekwon 4 hour ep but my god, after 30 min i was out all that yelling and clapping and talking over each other.
i only have so much bandwidth

Rogan is kinda weird cause he's the big MMA guy, used to be a fighter himself. But then he's also a stand up comic and smokes weed during his podcasts. And talks about his wild DMT trips. But then he's never said anything that's made me laugh, so is he actually funny?
And then he just got that huge Spotify deal for $500 mil or something so also insanely rich. Hard to get my head around. I don't watch MMA. But I've watched a bunch of clips from interviews he's done. But it's like I still don't know who he is.

I'm no Joe Rogan stan, but to watch the mainstream media lie about him was very eye opening. They still have people believing Ivermectin is a "horse drug", when it is a drug on the WHO list of essential medicines that's prescribed to millions of people all around the world...
Here is a clip of the new Anthony Kiedis interview where he mentions Rick Rubin and the Beastie Boys:

I have to admit to being pleasantly surprised at the time that Jack White was one of the attendees of rooftop celebrations of Yauch's life. So much so I wondered if it were actually Jack Black given a demonstrated history of collaboration.
Then doubly pleasantly surprised to hear Yauch and Jack jammed (presumably) in 2011. I'd love to hear that someday. Jack is great.
Did you hear the boys on Rick's show? Horovitz was so sidelong towards dude (with good reason), and I found RR to be insufferable as he just banged on and on. I'm probably being harsh.

agreed on all fronts.
Jack is indeed a cool dude. Rick is terribly smug on his show and in pretty much all interviews. however, the man has been a part of many an epic project, and has alot of great insight to share nonetheless. if one can withstand his pretention, there is consistent reward in his recollections.

What is this celebration of life for Yauch? First I’ve heard of it

I do find him painful to listen to. Everything gets treated so preciously, he just doesn't seem like he is being real. Gives me that cringy feeling.

Yep, I always appreciate when two artists/musicians I like turn out to admire or respect and get along with one another. I suppose it shouldn’t be that surprising. Massive fan of JW and I like how there was a mutual appreciation / fandom there. On a slightly different but maybe relevant note,I always thought Rancid playing at Yauch’s wedding was cool on so many levels.
Horovitz on Rick’s show just gave the impression of someone who is so overly used to and tired Rick’s ways despite having had (I presume) little to no contact since the early years. Which says an awful lot.

“…after a small family service, friends including Michael Stipe, Ben Stiller and Jack White gathered on a downtown hotel rooftop for a nighttime celebration of his life.”

Listened to the Jack Whie ep and Rick Rubin says he played guitar on LTI and did the solo on the guitar given to him by Kerry King, not Kerry king playing it like we’ve all been old since for ever.
I don’t trust Rick

I was puzzled when he said that too...
In another interview he said Kerry King and the Beastie Boys didn't like each other.

For some reason that’s not surprising.
I don’t know. It just didn’t seem like Rubin was telling the truth or maybe his memory of fading. Dude has done a lot of work with a lot of people.

I didnt get the impression from this interview that Rick played the leads (i.e. FFYR and No Sleep), but rather basic riffs and power chords.

Maybe the lead on FFYR since it's very basic?
Beyond the LTI era I've always boiled his technique down to lazing around on a couch, suggesting the removal of elements or suggesting some part of a composition be moved forward and another back, and then scooping up kudos.
In fact I get the overwhelming sense LTI was a case of him harnessing Horovitz' burgeoning talents (and Yauch's knack for gadgetry), and just putting a veneer of polish on their hard work. I feel like that was the hardest he ever worked aside from gasbagging on his podcast.
Edit: and now I'm being harsh. Not trying to inflame.
