I don't want to download IRC, are ther alternatives?
I read you could make a java version.

mIRC is the best way to get at it, Java IRC applets suck. They're sluggish and rarely hold up.

That said, if you want a Java based IRC access, you can insert a chat applet into a HTML page and configure it to access the chat server (irc.cockos.com:6667 and channel #beastieboys). Then you can put that up on your site, for example.

Would this be hard to do?
How big would the file be and would it take up much bandwidth?

It's fairly easy to do and there are plenty of free ones out there. Bandwidth isn't really an issue, they're often remotely hosted anyway.

I was wondering this too. Here's another - what happens after 30 days when you need to pay to register? or can you ignore register later? Chat is new here so does anyone have knowlege on the program?

With mIRC? You're supposed to register it after thirty days. PayPal him USD20 and it's yours (including future versions).

I'm not interested in it if it's not free. (n)(n)

You are supposed to register, but it works even if you don't.

:)

Search for "Java IRC applets", grab one, follow instructions and you're done. They're easy to find and configure.

Snak is free for thirty days, and then USD20.00 to register after that (including future versions).

Something like this (http://www.freejavachat.com/) might do the job for you.

I know you don't want to pay for IRC software, I was just telling you the facts :). I guess there are some decent freeware clients out there, search around.

I used Snak for about 8 months back in 1999 without registering. There's a file you have to delete when the program tells you that you've used it for 30 days. And then you can continue for another 30 days. Sadly I don't remember the name of the file. But it works.
