I was going to announce this next week but it seems a lot of people want it out now so here is the info written by Funky49 (y)
$5 Extra Remix Contest One (5ERCO)
This $5 Extra sponsored remix contest is open to all fans of the Beastie Boys including admins/mods of the Beastie Boys site, the Beastie Boys themselves and Russell Jones. The contest will be in the next issue of $5 Extra with the winners announced in the following issue.
Contestants are required to submit a remix in mp3 format and find a way to have it hosted so that all three judges can download it. Contestants are also required to submit a short description on what inspired them to do the remix and what they did to come up with it. Please have this translated into English so that the judges can read it. Also please tell us your first name, age, location on this planet and favorite non-alcoholic beverage.
Judging
Remixes will be judged by three people, just like the tv show Pop/American Idol. Each judge will have their own elements they are looking for. The judges are JimmyJrg as the Creativity Judge, funky49 as the Technical Judge and Mr. Mystery who has his own set of mystery elements you’ll want to bring to the track.
Jimmy is going to be the sexy Paula Abdul judge because he’s so sexy and I’m going to be the Simon Cowell judge because of my secret desire to change from being a nice guy into being a rat-bastard-jaded-asshole-bitch.
Prizes
First Place Prize: Golden Bullshit Plastic Microphone, a $5 US dollar bill signed with the judges signatures and a $5 Australian dollar bill signed with the judges signatures.
Second Place Prize: Something even shittier than the First Place Prize.
Third Place Prize: Life long subscription to $5 Extra.
Disclaimer
By submitting a remix you guarantee that you will not bitch about any element of the contest including you not winning. If you break any laws of your nation for this contest, it’s your own damn fault. We officially release ourselves of any responsibility including making our beds or picking up wet towels off the floor. By submitting your remix you acknowledge that we request you brush your teeth in the morning and help old ladies cross the street. Use the Force. Save the Whales. Eat your Vegetables. Have a Good Day.
Ok, if you'r lucky you might also get some super top secret prize as well as $5 ;)
The competition will close on July 15 so get cracking! If another issue of $5 Extra isn't out (like because NO ONE IS SUBMITTING STUFF) then I will announce the winners on my site as well as here.
And remember you can remix ANY Beastie Boys track you want and it is up to you how you remix it, you could make a mash-up, you could make a instrumental only remix, whatever just do it.
Sounds choice and chedder right?
Good.
Begin.

After criticizing a few remixes on this board, I got into remixing a month ago. Although I haven't completed a mix yet, what I got so far is crappy and out of flow. It is going to need tons of work before its a acceptable mix. I know Uru, Taco and of course Landos will have something slick up their sleeve. Prepare for stiff competition, count me in! Here comes the Cube!

We have decided that you will only be allowed to submit one remix, this makes it more fair and if you did have two remixes we wouldn't let you win more than once.
So submit what you think is your best.
Soundclick is fine, i'm a member so it's no problem.
Remember you need to send us a text file as wel though.
You can not change submissions, once you say you have submitted a remix (or if you post it in this thread) it is submitted and you can't take it back.
There are 3 judges cause that's what American Idol did.....and also because if two people don't agree then the third one decides.

Here's my entry for the contest.
Sure Shot (Saw Shootin' ST mix) .mp3 (http://www.thelooplounge.co.uk/hoolak-sure_shot-saw_shootin_st_mix.mp3)
This remix is a couple of weeks old now, but I updated it with some bits that I thought it needed.
About the remix
----------------
The music was inspired by old Atari ST and Commodore 64 sound chips which I wanted to mix with modern style beats. Most of the sounds were generated by an old Yamaha sound chip emulator which makes a lot of ringing and abrasive saw, sine and square waves.
Many different layers of drums make up the beats in this. One layer was heavily distorted and filtered to get a lo-fi type sound.
The sample of the old guy talking at the intro and near the end is actually me doing an impression of an style announcer which was given some distortion and hi-mid EQing to get that old phonogram effect.
The accappela had delay and reverb effect sent to it through the mixer and automated at key points i.e. last word of verses etc along with some panning automation.
There are a few samples in there too. The very last voice you can hear is HAL9000 from 2001 Space Oddyssey. There is a 56k modem dialing up in there too :)
My fave non alchoholic beverage would be a lovely big milkshake!
Hope u like.
Good luck to the rest of you ;)

Bob, aka DJ BC, Boston, MA. 31 yrs old.
This is a Beastles mash- ie, Beastie Boys vs the Beatles. The idea was to combine the music of two of the best, most unique, groundbreaking bands ever to make music.
The B-Boys DVD was the source of the "Whatcha Want" a capella. The break beats were culled from cds/records some time ago, and I regret that I did not keep track of the source songs. The piano riff and other musical samples came from the Beatles "Lady Madonna." The vocal laugh you hear now and then is Tupac.
In the first sample break, the band announcer is John Cusack from "High Fidelity" with some help from William S Burroughs. The second sample break contains a chopped-up "hip-hop-the-hibby" sample from Def Squad's remake of Rappers Delight. The third sample break contains samples from the Nightly News, James Brown, Public Enemy and Bob Dylan.
This is my official entry... I hope this qualifies.

BTW, Make can you post all remixes in here unless you send it via PM, E-mail etc.
It's just that we may not see it if it's just a random post that says "yo yo diggy BBoy Remix" cause then we might think "Bah, another remix, I'll check it out another time" but we might not and then you won't be in the contest and you'll be all "WTF? I totally entered" and we'll be like "No way"

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/1/caesarvigilantemusic.htm
Head over there, my entry is the Shake Your Rump remix.
It is entirely built from samples and made using Cool Edit Pro and Acid 4.0.
The samples are from:
Drums: Eagles of Death Metal (can't remember which song right now, but I cut them up helluva loads)
Hornz: Sly and the Family Stone - Underdog
Organ sounding bit: Focus - Sylvia
Extra Drums: Sgt. Peppers Reprise - The Beatles (a sly nod and wink to Paul's Boutique if you see what I mean)
It took me about two hours in total, I was in a flurry of inspiration.
My favourite non-alcoholic drink is motor oil.

I hope the judges can feel what I'm feeling on this one cause its a musical masterpiece.
Pass the Mic (6 Sided Bass Cube Remix) (http://www.beastieboys.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=23066) (2nd one)
The description is in the thread, what makes the 2nd one different from the first one. Is that I remade this one with the correct BPM, the beat goes with the acapella a lot better for most parts. Though I wanted to change some of the loops, but time doesn't wait for anyone, so this is what I got, its something at least. (y)

I think the production was quite unique and creative, though the lyrics don't follow the beat in the least. You should try and line up the words and the beat before the competition deadline.
Name: Luke
Age: As old as the moon and the stars (18 for those of you not familiar with astronomy)
Location: Houston
Drink: Beach water
How it was made: Sampled with Sound Forge, layed down with Acid
Here's my entry, http://www.audiostreet.net/artists/004/214/regrettable_anthems.html (The third one: Django's...)
Since my last remix I've been spending my time sampling my collection and didn't really expect to find the time to enter this contest, but I got really bored with all that sampling and decided to dabble a bit and came up with this in about 5 hours. There's somewhere around 21 different samples in it so it's pretty layered for what I normally do, but most of them are too low to hear and just add dither. Once again, this was a pretty quick mix and even a slightly rushed one since I'll be out of town tomorrow and can't work on it more.
Oh well, I think it's nice. If you listen to it please tell me what you think too! Suggestions are always welcome, enjoy.

my entry is over here (http://www.beastieboys.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=23918)
hey i just realized i have my one and only remix of sure shot i made quite some time ago. it's not competetive to most of the others but it doesn't do any good on my computer so why not throw it up on the computer.
the samples consist of a swedish back-then-underground artist called promoe. the tracks the samples were taken from were released around 98 and only on like mix tapes and hard-to-get 12''s. that's the reason for the "dirty" sound. the remix itself is pretty simple but since sure shot is just straight up hip-hop i thought i'd keep it to that theme.

My name is John aka Cheap Cologne, I am a dj/producer from Minneapolis Mn, finishing up my second solo release. I am 33 years old... damn.(I should change my name to Old Spice)
my favorite non alcoholic beverage is mountain dew.
(I better get some free stuff from pepsi for saying that.)
I made this remix because it was always one of my favorite Beastie tracks... I have a import cd single that I got about 12 years ago, it had like 4 versions of the song on there and I always thought I could make a Cheap Cologne remix just as good.(if not better) I started playing with some synth sounds and made a pattern... then reversed it so what your hearing is a reversed version of the melody that I created. I sat down and created the beat specifically for the song.. there are no drum loops in this..it wasnt a mash up of an existing beat or anything, I sequenced the drums around the vocals and did the chopping of the hook to make it completely different than the original. I was just playing around with the "you cant front" and decided to chop it up even more than I did in the hook and flip the drums all crazy at the end.
you cant front on that...

Hey Jimmy
Thanks a lot for the prizes, today they came safe and undamaged :) . The poster is pretty big and the stickers came in different colors. It was funny when I recieved it, because they wrote the words "Popstar posters and stickers" as its contents. If it really was a poster of Britney Spears I would of sent it to Uru :D .But this is nothing compared to the golden bullshit mic made out of plastic, thats like the Stanley cup of remixing and the $5 with the signatures will eventually go up in value.
