View Full Version : Remix Club

Hey guys I was talking to Taco a few days ago about starting a remix club. So many remixes get posted on here and then just forgotten. There are also a lot remixes that are simply one beat the entire time... pretty whack. Anyway the club would exist to showcase different remixers on the board and such. We would all work together and provide opinions to help each other in the craft. There would also be various contests and projects to accomplish. Anyway let me know if you guys are game and I'll see what I can do to get it started. I am going to be out of town for the weekend, so I will be back on Sunday night.

shhh you idiots.

the first rule of remix club is to not talk about remix club.

Nick Jade
06-17-2004, 09:21 AM
Hey guys I want to start getting the club underway, I need Lando's Dad to contact me, if he can, to talk about things.
IM: contradelahoya MSN: thesabotage@hotmail.com.
Or he can e-mail me at nick@ebitmedia.com

Now there are some decisions to make. I would really like to host the songs that are featured in the remix club. I work with a web design company, so we have our own servers. But I sitll don't want to use up too much space. Right now I think we would just host the songs that are part of the contests and/or missions that we create. We might provide the Sure Shot accapella and a few samples and see who can do the most with them. Or we might say, remix (or should I say mashup ;) )Intergalactic with a popular 80's new wave hit (as if that hasn't been done a thousand times).

While I would like to host all the remixes done by our members, I don't think it would be possible. There are just too many remixes. But this might help to limit the simple remixes and require people to get more creative. Like I said earlier, there are too many one beat mixes with no change ups at all. We will just have to decide what to do about that. Possibly a link to sound click will be in each profile. But that still just makes the club a relay point to a thousand remixes. People can get lost and not be able to find the real quality remixes. That's why I think there would be remixes of the week on the main page, highlighting the tightest of tight remixes.

There are so many things we need to discuss.

PS: I need a programmer who can work with databases if there are any out there.

I have been forumlating how it is all going to work. I need to make a schedule for 12 months. Each month will have a different contest. For instance, one month may be remix the beastie boys with the beatles, or an 80s pop song (ohh wait, should i say mashup?) Then we maye provide loops one month or just say remix a certain song. Then we will make cds out of them. I am sure we can't sell them, even if its not for profit, but we can procide packaging and such on the site.

Nick Jade

Yo...

I'm just a fan of YOU guys...I've listened to Lando's Dad, Ura-Nitro, Cheap Cologne and a few others I can't remember off the top of my head...but ALL are DOING FINE JOBS. I've been collecting Beastie Boy remixes for YEARS and am blown away at the creativity and experimentation going on here. I DJ as well and have used Lando's version of Alive and Intergalactic, Cheap Cologne's Hold it Now and Ura-Nitro's Alive (celta version) and ALL OF THEM have brought down the house. People are eating this shit up (including myself). I know I probably can't add anything remix-wise to the club (Except an extensive collection of MP3's) but I would love to be a sounding board to the magic happening on computers all over this great planet of ours. Please include me in the club when it finally gets going. I'll be glad to get beat-in or whatever you guys do for membership.
You give me faith that the sampler is not dead.

Hey guys, I am pretty freakin busy and come August my business is going to pick up even more. This is what I need from you guys to make this thing work.

-I need somebody to track down tutorials on Fruity Loops and ACID.
-I need all the accapellas beat mapped in ACID and sent to me. I am sure you guys have some currently lying around so it shouldn't be that hard. But make absolutley sure they are correct before you send them.
-If anybody has the old Alive sound packs from the Acid Contest let me know.
-I also need people to start sending me links to remixes they have done along with their forum screen name, real name, stage name, e-mail, and all ways they can be reached via messaging programs. Along with the e-mail I need you to mention how you feel you can contribute to the club other than remixing. Also, on the remixes you send me, tell me a little bit about the remix. If you simply put an accapella over an already fully produced song, that's not a remix. The point of the club is to highlight the finest of the finest. I want to hear all the ideas that you guys have. Hit me up: nick@ebitmedia.com

Peace,
Nick Jade

FL Studio/Fruityloops tutorials
-----------------------------

Gotta start by saying that FL is an amazing music creation tool, but jumping in without reading a tutorial or help file or two, you could quickly find yourself dismissing it as being a little taxing. I once turned my nose up at it years ago.
Then one day I read the basics FL's help files and I was soon on my way to music making bliss.
Like anything, practice makes perfect. Don't be scared, it's not rocket science. :)

Here are some links to get you in the flow.

Official FL Studio Help files - FL Studio Helpfiles (http://www.flstudio.com/help/)

Official FL Studio 'Getting Started' tutorial (second from bottom of page) > FL Studio tutorials (http://lister.e-officedirect.com/lister.exe?forumname=FLStudio&Filename=87.html) - I recommend taking all the "Beginner" level one first starting with 'Getting Started' first.

Here's a real basic tutorial I did some time ago for getting started on Fruityloops version 3. This would still hold it's own for the newer versions though >>> Fruityloops 3 getting started basics (old but still helpful) (http://www.studiowhiz.com/tutorials/26/)

As soon as Remix Club gets off the ground I will start posting some Beastie remix specific tutes there ;)

Hope these help.

What's the "pro" software you got?

Don't really matter what you use as long as you can use it to produce some fine tracks.

I'd say checkout.

FL Studio
Acid Pro
Reason
Pro Tools Free
Project 5
Orion
Magix Muisc Maker
Muzys

or

If you want pre-made loops and use a "My first Music" type software try eJay :o

Seriously tho.... if your new to these softwares you really go to put the effort in to learn them... they aint gonna teach themselves... same goes for anything you begin getting into.

If someone is serious they'll go to the store and buy a book on the subject and go through the entire thing and learn everything. treat it as if it's a class. I don't think tutorials are enough. yeah you can learn the basics but you're gonna be missing a lot of stuff.

Yeah true, but as I said.. tutorials are a great starting point for the hobbyist who want a quick way in to using the software. I don't think many peeps are gonna be buying books. F1 on your keyboard is the key. Reading short spurts of the helpfile/manual can help no end.

1. I think they're still doing it. It's easier to come to an established site
and swap shit rather than start one from scratch. Time and money on
the organizer's part(s) will be required. Here, everything is free. I think
a little more patience is in order.

2. I think most people out there download these tracks and store them
on their computer or maybe burn to disc.... If you release your mix on
here, it's fair game for whatever happens. Go after the people who sell it,
but don't get pissy if it spreads somewhat, that's the nature of this beast.

3. Lando, Nick, Taco, the organizers - Are you guys going to keep it
restricted to remixers only or can people like myself who don't mix yet
come to your BBS and peep the new science?

Thanks for your efforts, gentlemen. I'm sure it will be awesome when
it's eventually established. I look forward to it.

Nygel

/\....wat did u just say? i understood some of it... but the patience and money thing was a bit for me to comprehend... the remix club (from wat i gathered) is the best of the remixers in a little club that have a cool little place.. and then ppl could go to it and be like... The Club would servere to do a few things.

A) Be a home for those remixers who have shown a considerable effort in remixing. Going the extra mile to make their remixes top notch.

B) Provide the basics for new remixers. How to beat map for the first time. Basically telling the newcomers what to look out for, and how to construct a song. It would helo them along the rugged process that I and many went through when learning to remix.

C) Provide the accapellas pre beat mapped and ready for remixing.

I have most of the accapellas from Taco already beat mapped, but there are a few remaining to collect. The thing is, I do music promotion, so I work all week then run shows all weekend. I have school on top of that. And my other creative endevours. I am willing to host this and do the design work. The problem comes down to the fact that everybody thinks it is a good idea, but when it comes to actually submitting substance, everybody looks the other way or says they will turn something in... but looses steam. I am as guilty of this as any other. My schedule is jam packed 7 days a week so it is very hard to sit down and write out tutorials. So if you trully want to see this club be succesfull, reply to this topic with what you can add, content wise. One thing I need is a detailed explenation on how to beat map an accapella. Many new remixers have a hard time with this. If you feel you can write this tutorial detailed and accurate please reply with your e-mail address.
