Which White Stripes? I found some supposedly rare edition of Elephant at a record store last week. Meg's got on a black dress instead of a white one on the cover and its clear red and white vinyl. Not that anyone cares or anything, but is that the one you have? Cause I just wanna know exactly how rare (if at all rare) that Stripes record is. Yeah, I know I'm a geek.

I'm listening to Elephant right now.
The US vinyl cover has Meg in black and Jack in red/white
The UK vinyl cover has Meg in white and Jack in black/white
All other vinyl cover is both in white
I also have red and white vinyl for mine.

TT5B. Literally. It's playing as I am writing this.

Just got it late last night & right now is the fourth time I am hearing it.

Random stuff (need more listening time before talking about the music itself):

* packaging is very nice; it took awhile to unfold it all :)

* CD can be a bitch to get off that weird hub-holder thing. :(

* played in my Compaq computer with no problems & copied it to Windows Media player with no problems either. Played back fine in two Technics CD players (and one is almost 10 years old), a Pioneer dvd-audio player & a little Emerson boombox in our kitchen.

* video is cool (black & white photography like this is underrated)

* this album will not be played at a lot of church picnics :D (on 3 The Hard Way the m-f word fits soooooo smooth into the chorus (y) )

* I think this album might have some "hidden" extreme low bass: my Boston Acoustics speakers have metal grills you can see through & on several songs I noticed their 8" woofers moving long distances.........but I couldn't hear anything. These speakers can go down to around 40Hz so I think there is something much lower on the CD they can't audibly reproduce. I'm going to try to go to a local stereo store today where they have a bunch of Infinity and Velodyne subwoofers hooked up & check to see if this is the kind of bass you can only feel rather than hear (I'm finding more & more musicians are doing this on their albums).

* The recording itself is real clean and detailed but the overall sound is pretty bright (but not in a bad way) compared to their other albums. For example, after listening to TT5B all the way through the second time I put in CYH and that was a lot "warmer" sounding. I think I read they did TT5B on a ProTools system, which means it was most probably recorded 100% digitally from start to finish using the PCM format. That's not bad or anything-it just means that whatever they wanted us to hear at home would get there unaffected so that means (I think) the BBs wanted this squeaky-clean feel for TT5B. No surprize there since IIRC they wanted an 80s feel this time. If they wanted a more organic feel they could have run the signals through an analog/tube-based mixing board for example & the digital recorder would also record that type of sound, which would then appear on the CD we buy. And guess what: according to the CD's label, CYH was initially recorded on an analog tape system. But that album had a much different vibe to it so they might have chosen analog because its sound "fit" better. Kewl eh?

Not sure why but whenever I buy a new CD, especially if it is a brand new release like TT5B (which I jsut bought about six days ago) I start playing my older stuff more often.................

The Cars' Panorama (http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=1095223&cart=195318156&style=music&Bab=E), on vinyl I bought new in 1983. This is their "weird" album they put out after their two previous albums hit it big--I think they were experimenting since they had some money in the bank. IMO its a good album. The Cars were the first group I really got into (I still have the t-shirts from their concerts I went to, and no, I don't wear them anymore :) ). I never have been able to figure out how they played the drums in "Touch & Go" but its still an effing awesome song.

And this cosmic semi-rap/sorta hip-hop/sample-heavy CD from 1994 from Single Gun Theory, a group from Australia: Flow, River Of My Soul. (http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?style=MUSIC&pid=1659661&cart=195318156) (i don't have this newer version with the bonus tracks though). They use samples from the Twilight Zone, American astronauts, a psychlogist talking about a "silver white cord" and "feet lifting off the ground", a scientist discussing poltergiests, etc, etc. Even has some scratching in there. Very trippy but lots of positivity overall--kewl stuff.

And: Beck's Odelay, Sonic Youth's Goo and my old vinyl of This is The Moody Blues (the Moodys to me sound like a happy version of Pink Floyd).

Damn they turn off the edit thing after just one day?? Since I KNOW :) everybody wanted to hear my moldy oldies from the 80s, I tried to find a sample of that Touch & Go song with the weird drumming because I didn't realize Cduniverse's sample was only the chorus which is totally different than the rest of the song. Even Amazon had the same sample :( though thiers did include about two seconds of what I'm talking about. All I know about that song is I can't tap my foot to it for some reason.

After a month of almost solid Beastie music I'm kind of taking a break from them so I don't burn out on them, except for a little bit of Hello Nasty & the video anthology.

On The Rocks, part two (http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=1108718&cart=198785255&style=music&Bab=E) from Capitol's "Ultralounge" (http://ultralounge.com/) collection (that "Hey Bartender" link is really cool).

This CD is fun to listen to because it's all major rock or pop songs redone by elevator music bands back in the 60s to literally be played back in elevators, doctor's waiting rooms, etc. But some songs actually sound better than the original--soemtimes a bunch of violins played together can have more emotional power than any single ampified guitar. Highlite tracks for me: Julie London singing the bubblegum pop song "Yummy, Yummy, Yummy" in a really sultry voice and "These Boots Are Made For Walking" by Mrs. Elva Miller, a self-described housewife who can't sing worth a crap--hilarious. And "Superfly" is funny too because it sounds like it was performed by a bunch of suburban soccer moms.

The Definitive Jimmy Smith

Inspired to buy this by the Beasties--definitly worth it. The horn section sounds tremendous so try to use a real stereo & not computer speakers to listen to this CD if you buy it.

Nothing Changes Under The Sun (http://www.eslmusic.com/shop/artist.asp?pk_session=%7B602D0FD9%2DC7FF%2D45C9%2D 8CF1%2D6A90FC2329E4%7D&pk_artist={B696AAB7-7B5F-41BD-9B1C-A9C8E5777C47}) by Blue States. I have no idea what you call this type of music, maybe dreamy/trippy/lounge? When an album cover is a picture of a gray-haired tourist photographing the monument to the site of the first atomic bomb test, ya know the music inside ain't gonna be normal (it's actually very relaxing and--this is the only way to describe it--pretty music to listen to).

Fashion Nugget (http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?style=music&pid=1129242&cart=198785255) by Cake. Has a great song ("Nugget") using the f-word in all the choruses that fits in with the political scene happening right now. But the rest of the album is good too. (y)

My sister's boyfriend found a whole bunch of old cassete tapes in his attic and he gave them to me. Most of them are punk and hardcore (Sandinisa! and Minor Threat are both in there) but one stood out to me as I was going through them: Licenced to Ill! So that is in my car right now because I have no CD player in there only a tape deck. It is pretty sweet.

Stuff I borrowed from the library this week:

Moneybrother - Blood Panic (better than I expected, had only heard the singles in which he sounded too much Bruce Springsteen for my taste, rest was much better)
Patti Smith - trampin' (there's still life in the old hag)
Nick Drake - Made to love magic (I wish I had a fireplace, perfect to sit and enjoy a glass of sherry to)
Johnny Cash - Man in black (classics and stuff)
Arabian Nights: club and chillout classics (Arabian disco and rave)

::folds arms across chest:: *I* still use those things (this (http://www.vintagetechnics.com/cdplayers/slpg4.htm) & this one (http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pna/product/detail/0,,2076_15020669_35102,00.html) actually). Pffft....you young whippersnappers think you're all that with your cellular wireless telephones, your Carson Daly & those fancy hip-hugger jeans. :D We'll see who still has their music in ten years time - dem hard drives don't last forever! Muwahahaha!!!

BTW as far as what's in my player: as I mentioned elsewhere, I just bought Weezer's blue album (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000003TAW/qid=1140512566/sr=2-2/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_2/102-6126920-0408937?s=music&v=glance&n=5174) couple days ago. Lots of loud guitars and happy lyrics - good stuff!!!

Ooweooo I look just like Buddy Holly......... (actually I think I like the song about garages a little better)
