Anybody ever do that thing where you buy a record for whatever reason and sort of discard it for a while.

Then you come back to it later down the road and discover it is perfect in every way?

Sadly, I did this with Paul's Boutique way back when (like many people)

But recently, I've discovered another album in my collection like this....

FUCKIN Midnite Vultures by BECK.

Christ, just like Odelay, it's flawless and I never knew til now.

:(

I had that same epiphany with Midnite Vultures myself a few months back. I originally got it expecting the laid back chillness of Odelay, though it didn't cut it for me. But when I listened to it years later I realized that it was like an Odelay with more energy that was bursting at the seams with ill shit. Every second there's something new going on.... I love it. It's genius.

That phenomena happens to me all the time, though. Some of the more notable discs that took me years to appreciate include "Physical Grafitti" (Led Zeppelin,) "Bizarre Ride" (Tha Pharcyde,) "One Hot Minute" (Red Hot Chili Peppers,) and just this week "Nia" (Blackalicious.)

Those are some of my favorites too, though I'm also in love with "Hollywood Freaks" and "Mixed Bizness." The whole album is amazing. I can't wait for his new one. He's working with the Dust Brothers (primarily), and doing a few tracks with Dan the Automator and Timbaland.

To Disco Quebrado, that's a shame that you don't dig Vultures. If you haven't listened to it in awhile, maybe its time you throw on some headphones and give it another shot. You're really missing out. Oh well.

I cannot agree.

But it is an emotional thing - perhaps you need to have been through a period in a relationship where it rings true.

It is a simple, brilliant song.

I want something like I remember
And I want something
That lasts forever
I remember times you said
That you'd be true to me
Look at how the weather's changing

I'm accustomed to your deception
Comes the rule with no exception
And I've been dragged across the river
Running far and wide
Come and see how I feel inside

Change for the better
Change for the worse
Changes with summer and fall

Now you're a stranger
Spare me some change
So I can find someone to call my own

Now that winter has fallen upon us
I need something that's warm and honest
And if I found someone who thinks
That they'll be true to me
I really wouldn't want to change it

I have seen I have seen
What these changes mean to me
If you're thinking of changing
If you're thinking of staying with me
We need to agree
We need to make some changes
We need what we need
Do I need you
Do you need me

The lyrics are all right -- much better than the music, which I think is pedestrian.

The hooks and melodies and bridges of the other songs sound so effortlessly brilliant; "Changes" sounds like Julian Lennon trying to write Sugar music.

There were things that got tossed off the album -- "Needle Hits E," "Diamonds are Haloes," or especially "Try Again" which are so much better.

But, as you say, it's a personal thing. I still don't get "Beowulf," either.

There really are only three near perfect albums that I can think of:

Paul's Boutique - Beasties (which doesn't have a weak moment)
Revolver - The Beatles (which is flawed only by 1 or 2 mediocre songs)
Bringing It All Back Home - Bob Dylan

Others that come close are:

London Calling - The Clash (Almost perfect...Four Horsemen was kinda weak)
Abbey Road - The Beatles (Why is Maxwell's Silver Hammer on this?)
Are You Experienced? - Jimi Hendrix (The US or UK version)
Check Your Head - The Beasties (Needed some of the fat trimmed)
The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses (near flawless...some weak material)
Elvis in Memphis - Elvis Presley
IV/Zoso - Led Zeppelin (It seems cliched, but it really is that good)
III - Zepplin (lacked impact of other albums, but is more consistent than all but IV)
Sticky Fingers - The Rolling Stones
Darkness on the Edge of Town - Bruce Springsteen
De La Soul is Dead - De La Soul (marred only by some weak songs/skits)
Death Certificate - Ice Cube (near perfect...a bit harsh)
Illmatic - Nas (Could have done without the MJ sample on It Ain't Hard To Tell)
Ziggy Stardust - David Bowie (If it were more consistently strong throughout)
Nation of Millions...- Public Enemy (1 or 2 filler tracks)
Definitely Maybe - Oasis (If it really were all their songs)
In The Wee Small Hours - Frank Sinatra (a bit repetitive)
Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd (Too much Shine On You Crazy Diamond)
Little Earthquakes - Tori Amos
And Justice for All - Metallica (why does the sound quality have to suck?)
Burnin' - Bob Marley
We're Only in it for the Money - Frank Zappa (a bit too silly at times)
Live at the Old Quarter - Townes Van Zandt (not quite varied enough)
Face to Face - the Kinks (Village Green... is excellent too, but lacked impact)
Axis: As Bold As Love - Jimi Hendrix (not as consistently strong as it could've been)
Blood Sugar Sex Majik - RHCP (some extremely high highs...unfortunately some low lows, particularly with the lyrics)
Nevermind - Nirvana (Once again, some weak filler here and there)
The Bends - Radiohead (Not particularly fond of several songs)
Morning Glory - Oasis (Some unoriginal moments drag this down a few notches. Otherwise fantastic album)
Live at the Apollo - James Brown (has had better material, but no album as consistent)
Raising Hell - Run DMC (You Be Illin isn't quite a timeless gem or anything)
The Joshua Tree - U2
The Man Who - Travis (It may be a little too sappy for some people, but it has very few filler tracks)

There are albums that I like better than a lot of these, but these ones have the least amount of filler material.

That's two bands I think you picked the wrong record as their perfect one. Only cuz J5's "Quality Control" literally is perfect as is Incubus' "Morning View"

The newest Hoobastank cd is a definite perfect album .... and so is Under my skin by Avril Lavigne

Why am I not shocked?

The three perfect albums for me...

Radiohead - OK Computer
Jem - Finally Woken

Ah good old Muse! A poor imitation of Radiohead.

Poor imitation my ass.....sure they sound similar, but Absolution is a genius album.

I'm seeing them in concert in 2 weeks.

Beatles--Abbey Road
Yes, Maxwells Silver HAmmer is on it, but it's just a show of the beatles' humor

RATM-s/t
From the opening strains of "Bombtrack" to the last scream of "Freedom", this album is pure unadulterated fury

Led Zeppelin--IV
Take away the massive radio play of Stairway to Heaven, and this album is solid from start to finish

The Shins--Chutes Too Narrow
Perfectly mixing Beach Boys-esque sound with acoustic ballads to make one of the best pop albums of hte last decade

Talking HEads--Remain in Light
The Talking Heads' best album, and it is probably one of the best of the 70s, even though it was released in December of 79 ( i think)

I used to like Muse before they got ideas above their station. Showbiz is their finest, but it is not a perfect album.

Origin Of Symmetry isn't bad but Absolution is a joke. I saw them live in December and ever since then, I've totally gone off them.

The only perfect album in my mind is ATLiens by Outkast. Lot of critics say "Aquemini" is their best, but ATLiens doesn't have a single filler track or even a single weak moment, nope, it's perfection from beginning to end. Aquemini has a few tracks that I'm not feeling, but it's still an outstanding album.

Anybody ever do that thing where you buy a record for whatever reason and sort of discard it for a while.

Then you come back to it later down the road and discover it is perfect in every way?

That happens ALL the time. Some albums you can pop in the stereo and just LOVE from the first guitar riff on. Others will take you some time to really get a grasp of and appreciate. I don't think every album is meant to be instantly loved.

The latter are a lot like a fine wine, you just gotta age it gracefully and then it tastes wonderful. :)

As an entire album, The Bends is probably the best fitting album to go under the "it wasnt so great the first time, but the second time it was perfect" category. At first listen a few tracks stuck out, but the second time you listen those singles simply fade away and the album becomes one cohesive piece of work.

Between Ok Computer, Kid A, Amnesiac, and Hail To The Thief. Its hard for me to decide, they are all perfect to me.

Pablo Honey-don't have it, heard it's crappy anyway
The Bends-a good album to relax and maybe study to with some great rock out moments thrown in there (Just, My Iron Lung, Bones to name a few)
OK Computer-Good car-listening album
Kid A-Good album to listen to when you just want to sit and think or contemplate
Amnesiac-Still haven't bought it yet although I've had it in my hands a few times
Hail To The Thief-Has some of their best pure rock songs, when I'm in that kind of mood I'll pop HTTT in

Never mind the Bollocks; Here's the Sex Pistols

The greatest punk rock record ever, of course; was briefly, perhaps, the greatest _rock_ record in the locally known universe; and of course, a historical dividing line: the death knell for Progressive Rock and for Concept Albums. So I can't resist mentioning that NEVER MIND THE BOLLOCKS is also my favorite concept album.

Paul's Boutique is definetely perfect. I've heard it so many times, after so many years, and I'm still finding new things I love in it. That's a sign of a classic.

Same with London Calling. Songs like 'Four Horseman' and 'Lovers Rock' that I used to skip, I find more and more interesting as time goes by. It never gets boring listening to it, no matter how many times I've heard it.

Honourable mentions go to Radiohead's Kid A, Modest Mouse's The Moon and Antartica, and The Street's A Grand Don't Come For Free, 3 albums that I think will get better with age.

I also really dig this SMELLYFEET!!@!@ album, but strongly prefer debut, Planters Warts.

But I don't think you could really argue that either one is perfect.

Me Against The World...and Illmatic in terms of rap.
1999,Purple Rain and Sign o' the Times by Prince are really solid lps

perfect in my opinion in terms of impact, sound, and each track flowing/connecting to the next perfectly in terms of sound/lyrics

You're a punk...

Nah. If I were a punk, I'd either be bending over for boys in the alley or making reactionary claims about the Angry Samoans' greatness, depending on the era.

Or I'd be a small piece of burning rope used to light fuses (I think)...?

I always thought 'Experiacne' was pretty damn perfect, as a sort of rave concept record.

And good call on the Holy Bible by the Manics, so perfect it chills me!

I listen to the various music. It would be silly to limit itself to one band or musical style. ;)

Here are maybe a few more:

Rage Against The Machine - Rage Against The Machine
