View Full Version : Root Down (Punk Up mix)

Here's an experimental mix using synth guitar sounds and lots (maybe too much) distortion in attempt to create a speedy punk type version of the great Root Down.
Probably my worst remix yet :D, thought I'd share the mayhem anyway.
Would of been good to get some real guitar action on it and maybe the Beastie re-singing on it....although I thought they would be a bit busy with the new album out and all :)

I never heard Root Down on turbo, did you speed up the acapella? Sounds like you did.

I think it would sound better slowed down a bit. I actually kinda like it. but I'm a punk at heart anway. should use real guitars though. Also, the mix seems a little too hot for me.

That was pretty cool. You really captured that punk sound well. It actually sounds like it could be pulled off on live instruments and sound good. Look out y'all, we've got a scientist on our hands here!

wow, that was probably the most radical remix i've ever heared.
You did a great job making it that differrent from the original.
Why is the volume level of the vocals so low?

Mixing this was a nightmare.... there's a fine line between frequencies and gains. It didnt help that the track sounds different through 3 different outputs (headphones, speakers and ipod) either. I'm gonna have to cough up for some decent monitors soon.
Taco, how low are the vocals? really low? I will attempt to fix it.

Don't worry, a pair of nice, flat-frequency response monitors will just confuse the hell out of you even more ;) You should definetely get a pair but you'll still find yourself running around with track sheets and a CD, testing different setups even after you feel the monitor mix is perfect. Flat monitors make it easier to nail the mix but definetely aren't a panacea. Downloading the remix now (y)

At the moment I will transfer my tracks from my computer to my ipod and then flip between my track and tracks of the same genre and listen to how they compare. It is all a bit too longwinded though....Ideally I just want the sound I hear out loud of my computer to sound the same everywhere. This is gonna be essential to me as I'm currently planning/working towards making an album with my band partner.
