They're great songs, but will they stand the test of time? Sure, you like it right now, but the album JUST came out! It's like saying Spiderman 2 (or any movie currently in theaters) is the best movie they've ever seen. Is it really better, or is it just a current fave?

Think about it... will you still be rockin' "Open Letter to NYC" in 6 months? 6 years? It's too soon to tell. Personally, I'm really digging Shazam and Oh, Word, but I can't say they're a top 5 favorite just yet.

OK so here is my little list. This is in no order...well, chronological. And it's annotated!

And yet, this list makes little sense because I'd say Paul's Boutique is my favorite album. Maybe so much so I'd be hard pressed to pick a stand-alone song. But Shadrach might be it.

* I still feel myself as a 12-year-old girl with the walkman on when I hear this song, plus my name is Ali so I've been lifted and tossed around to this song many times in my life.

** Now just wait a minute: I feel this is an overlooked song. It's hilarious. It's got COWBELL. It's got Zeppelin. It's a cohesive story about a hero with a tragic flaw that leads to his demise. And the line about the cab driver recognizing the girlie from the back of her head? Mmmmkay?

*** Sabotage is the soundtrack to my college years and the video brings it home for me. Plus I love when Adrock screams.

**** I'm no collector but I have many remixes of this song and it never fails to make me happy. I grew up on the upper west side too so maybe that has something to do with my love for this song. A boyfriend once stole my EP of this song. I bought it again. He's long gone.

***** I've lived in Chicago since 2003. I love Chicago in many ways. However most people here hate/judge/suspect New Yorkers (not to mention Jews!) and the city is very segregated, with balkanized nooks for each ethnic group and little understanding across cultures. I'm not saying NYC is perfect, but in terms of diversity it's much farther along than Chi, plain and simple. When TT5B came out, I went for a long walk with the album on my headphones for that much-anticipated first listen. I went out of my mind when I heard this song. I felt so proud, like YES, that is my fucking hometown! I played it over & over again for weeks. I kinda played it out tho ;)
