Errr....I had ATLiens and Aquemini before Ms Jackson was released, but they weren't as famous as they are now since the release of Ms Jackson.

Stop being so pedantic. It's highly irritating.

Asian Dub Foundation - Naxalite
Soundgarden - Spoonman (or Black Hole Sun?)

For Asian Dub Foundation I would've said Free Satpal Ram and for Soundgarden I'd go for Black Hole Sun, that's when the bigger audience noticed them.

White Stripes - Fell in love with a girl
Iggy Pop - Lust for life

player's ball and elevators were both HUGE hits for Outkast. they both topped the rap charts and went gold, elevators even went to 12th on the pop chart. it's hard to understand why they didn't cross-over until Ms. Jackson.

rosa parks brought them into the spotlight but they didn't get big until ms jackson came out (y) That's true, Ms Jackson is the song that "made them famous". I know they had some hits before that, but Ms Jackson was an international super hit and brought them to a wider audience which made them famous. Before that they were just another hip hop group on the bubble.

R.E.M. - It's the End of the World or Losing my Religion

They were already famous with the indie crowd as far back as "Radio Free Europe" (from '82 or '83 I think)

More:
Blur-Song 2
The Hives-Hate To Say I Told You So (although they were already huge in Sweden)
Sonic Youth-Teenage Riot for most people but probably 100% for those who had no knowlege of them whatsoever
Weezer-Buddy Holly or The Sweater Song
Smashing Pumpkins-would it be Today or Disarm? I can't remember.

No, Give It Away was definately their breakout hit. Under The Bridge may have been bigger, but it wasn't their breakout hit.

No, Give It Away was definately their breakout hit. Under The Bridge may have been bigger, but it wasn't their breakout hit.

what is the title of this thread? Give It Away was a minor hit...Under the Bridge was much bigger (as you stated) and it made them very famous...but hey we can agree to disagree (that is if you still disagree ;) )

Yeah, the title of hte thread is "The songs that made them famous" not "the songs that made them most famous". Give It Away made them famous; Under The Bridge just solidified it.

yes, but higher ground put them on the MAP. that was when they started getting played on Mtv. Mtv = fame; we're not talking about the magnitude.

and mcaismyhero, famous doesn't just mean famous in the US. Blur were huge in Europe way way before their self titled album.

ElectricBugaloo

Blur-Song 2

Maybe in the US, but in the UK and Europe, it was definately 'Parklife' that made them huge.

Blink 182-Dammit
P.U.S.A.-Lump, Peaches or Kitty..take your pick

i would think that "all the small things" or "whats my age again for blink is their song, because i doubt anybody who isnt a fan would even really remember the song, and the fact that people who dont listen to their music would know those songs is what gives them the "world famous" deal

for the presidents, i would say "lump" or maybe even "mach 5" because they came out first, and most people recognize those tunes

others could be:

green day - brain stew
aerosmith - walk this way

and song 2 for blur was definetly the one here in the US, i dont even know if ive heard that other song...

jabumbo, green day were huge when dookie came out. the singles from that album were longview, welcome to paradise, basket case and when i come around. i think longview was the first single. i'm not sure which single was the real breakthrough, but they were definitely huge before Brainstew, which was about their response to success.

catch a bad one

Ace of base - the sign

OHHH YEAH!!!!

I'd say Basket Case for Green Day

adrockmelanie
08-07-2004, 03:53 PM
no, i think the one that threw hoobastank into the popular/new/famous thing was the song from about 2 years ago... i can't remember it now.

[EDIT: oh yeah-- "crawling in the dark". it was huge and WAY overplayed when i was in 11th grade]

jabumbo
08-07-2004, 10:33 PM
I'd say Basket Case for Green Day

yeah...

i was thinking insomniac came out before dookie...

what about "welcome to paradise"? that was before even dookie right?

adrockmelanie
08-08-2004, 12:18 AM
no. "welcome to paradise" is ON dookie.

...and wasn't "longview" the song that made them big? i don't know. nevermind.

adrockmelanie
08-08-2004, 12:22 AM

No one in the US can name one Blur song other than Song 2. For some reason we can't figure out what gfood music is when we hear it.

Pearl Jam it was Alive without a doubt, followed by Even Flow, then Jeremy

Dj Shadow-Organ Donor
The Notorious B.I.G.-Big Poppa
LL Cool J-Mama Said Knock You Out
Jamiroquai-Virtual Insanity

Although Shadow's most known song is organ donor, im not sure it's known to a wider audience. Also, about LL, I know he has a bunch other song that were big, but I think that song is what made him more known at the time.
