View Full Version : Beastie Taping policies?
So do "they" (not just the boys but also thier record company) allow taping at the show such as "the dead," "phish," "allman brothers," "Sound Tribe Sector 9," "th disco biscuits" and even "DMB"?
I bet the 3 would be all about people taping and sharing the music, but those greedy record companies...I can see it now... "2030 new release of previously unreleased live SBD recordings of the beastie boys vol.1 through vol. 50."
"Only $30 a piece, its a deal." It will be like the grateful dead's dick's picks.
there will be us older heads that say things like "ya, i was that show in 94'...to bad people don't rock out like that anymore."
Thanks for the info. in advance regarding "official taping policies" of the Beastie Boys.

If you read the small print on tickets to nearly all gigs/sporting events etc. they say no recording equipment inc. cameras, digital recorders etc. However, you can always sneak in the equipment seeing as decent digital recording or photographic equipment are sooo small these days. However, I wouldnt endorse such activities.
Thanks for the info. BTW i got 4 tix to the Philly show this morning 2 on the floor and 2 in sec 123. Hopefully i'll get a noice spot to get er done!
Also while getting the tix i had an awefully experience:
here's how my morning went:
8:30 got up
9:00 at front door of tixmaster box office.
(yesterday they told me to be there at 9 or 9:15 and they would do the lottery method of forming a line to sell the tix)
9:30 doors are still locked and i'm like "what the F"
9:55 doors still locked but no one else was there to get tix, EXCEPT this mother Fin' ticket scalper.
9:57 we realize there will be no lottery
10:00 they open the doors; we briskly walk up stairs to the tix counter and i'm the 1st in line (out of two people) i order my tix but when i go to get the plastic i forgot it was in my pocket not wallet (my brain don't work good in the morning) so it takes me 30 sec to find it then i hand it over to pay.
10:01 That piece of shit scalper (or ticket broker) hits me with an open fist right at the front of the counter and starts giving me shit for not havin' my bills ready to go.
10:01:30 This dude asked if i had a job and how old i was implyin' that i was stupid for not having the plastic in under 1 second. If was buyin' tix to any other show other than a beastie gig then i would have kick this piece of mother fin' shit in the balls. I'm only five3 and about 120 lbs (the other dude was 50+ lbs more than me and 5 inches taller) fighting fair is not an option.
10:02 we both had are tix and i maintain control by not reciprocating the violence rather i bought 2 more tix (after he got his six tix) in sec 123 right next to the scalper who felt it nessessary to hit me because he is a piece of shit and wants to make a buck the sleazy way.
Sorry for the rant. now i feel better and can enjoy the rest of this bootyful day. cheers ya'll.

Not most of the shows i go to brother. all the "KIND" musicians (except the bboys & b.dylan) let you record. Check out all the mic stands at a dead or phish show! Its like a small forrest.
In fact, there is a whole community of tapers (thousands of them) that trade the shows they record, but never ever sell shows and most def don't trade studio stuff.
I've taped some 30 shows this year. Its the cheapest & most honest way to build a truely massive music collection. Hopefully, i'll fill my 40 gig Ipod by the end of the a year.

Yeah we're actually working on this. I really would like to see it opened up to some tapers.
Happy to hear that some other people think this would be a worth while venture. Thanks for the consideration. Do you think it would be possible to make it happen (taping) during this Tour? One more question: when you said "we're" who does that include? Maybe you and the other admin. or do you mean the 3? I highly doubt the latter. But hey lets all think positive. Nothing can get done with out PMA. (positive mental attitude) :)

I am in direct contact with management on this issue. It's on the books as something to try to figure out for this tour, one way or another.

on a side note.. what kinda quality could be obtained with a minidisc and mic ghetto rig set up..

Most stuff that is recorded with minidisc is very poor. although if you got a great preamp and mics well then you might get something worth listening to as long as the people around you are not screaming into your mics.
But if you were to use a Digital Audio Tape (DAT) recorder, such as a sony M1 or Sony D8, well then you could get a tape that sounds real noice. AS long as you use a good pre-amp and mics.
There are some very expensive "stealth rigs" that you can buy that put to shame the rig that i got which cost 3 grand.
Hopefully by the Philly show there will be no need to think about stealth. Rather this dream will come true: a special recording area in the sweet spot where we tapers are free to set up our rigs; mic stand, pre-amps and laptops or DATs. Now wouldn't that be nice.

Hello, again. i was wondering if there have been any developments regarding taping at the shows.I'm not looking for confirmation just an update. Any of these answers are cool with me: "no new developments" "we are busy and have not had time to disscuss it" or "we forgot" or "no, your not going to tape any shows kid" or "yes, you can tape, here are the rules" or just any answer that you want to give. Thanks for the info. in advance. peace >Dave

could beastie boys, if they dont allow taping this tour.. could they do like www.livemetallica.com where they sell every show on the tour? that would be cool either way.
That sure is an option but not the best in my opinion b/c it can cost alot of money to buy each show. Dead sell thier shows i think for 20 which is a ripoff b/c it is not produced and ya know they are already makin big $$ from the tix sales why make more. Maybe they will sell the shows and give the money to a good cause but still it would cost ya alot to get all the shows form one tour. Furthermore if the band puts out the show CD then you cannot share it with others without being a thief. But if they let people record then ican share with anyone i please and it is all good and this way it is much cheaper for everyone if not free. Thats just my 2 cents.

Can we bring regular cameras into the concerts or is that change depending on where the concert is? (MSG in particular)
