View Full Version : Denzel Washington standing up to Katie "ultra liberal" Couric
SCBstylee

Meryl Streep and Denzel were on the today show "live" with Katie Couric
to talk about the movie "Manchurian Candidate."
At one point Katie asked Denzel, "have you seen Fahrenheit 9/11?" To
which Denzel replied, "No, and I have no intentions on seeing it." Katie
and Meryl were "so noticeably" taken aback! It was so cool!
Then, a discourse (or more preferably, a fight!) began between all three
of them with Denzel being barraged with all kinds of anti-Bush,
anti-republican comments, but "the man stood his ground" and soon
enraged the women so much that they couldn't get a word in edgewise.
Meryl Streep turned blood red and she sat with her legs crossed and her
one leg shaking up and down, fuming! Then Katie uttered the words that
put the final nail in her coffin, she said to Denzel "you see, that's
the problem I have with "you people."
She of course did not get to finish her sentence because Denzel pounced
on her verbally by responding "YOU PEOPLE! YOU PEOPLE! Just what do
you mean you people! Do you mean "You People" as in me as a Christian,
or do you mean "You People" as in me as a REPUBLICAN? She then tap
danced her way through the next minute of the show. But Denzel went out
fighting and declaring that Fahrenheit 9/11 is nothing but propaganda
and lies distorted to support a cynical democratic film director's views.
There's a celebrity that deserves to wear the uniform in movies and I
don't mind at all. Everybody else is a hypocrite!
of course the liberal media is trying to hide this!!!

I wish people like Katie Couric and Al Franken could be called "ultra Democrats" or something more accurate.
I still find the idea of a "liberal" media laughably rediculous. It would be nice, but I find it difficult to envision how such a thing would come into existence. There are five huge multinational corporations that control almost all of the media and their revenue stream comes almost entirely from major multinational corporate sponsors. So which which media outlet is it that is placing the people's agenda over the corporate agenda?

That's odd, I remember the interview quite differently. You do know transcripts of these types of things are readily available.
Couric: "And how do you feel about the current political situation?"
Washington: "You know, I haven't seen ‘Fahrenheit 9/11,’ because I live in America. I grew up here. I'm an ex-slave. I'm a result of what this country can do. So it's nothing knew to me. I'm not surprised at all. It's just business as usual. What I want to talk about is, what are we doing right now, today, for these young kids that are coming home? Are we embracing them? I don't hear about them being lifted up. I mean, I'm not just talking about a parade but—"
Couric: "Are they getting the support they need."
Washington: "Are they getting the support and love they need from us? And maybe that story's being told, but I sure haven't seen it that much in the news. Yeah, they're pointing fingers about who was right and whose wrong and who started what and where the weapons of mass destruction. But these kids are coming home."
Streep: "Uh-huh."
Washington: "You know, I have a son, 19, 19-year-olds are coming home completely different."
While these three agree, "Manchurian Candidate" doesn't have an ideological agenda, they admit it's no coincidence it's set against the backdrop of an election. If nothing else, Jonathan Demme hopes it sparks what it did here -- a dialogue.
Demme: "It's fundamental to a democracy that you're not only permitted to speak out, you're supposed to have an opinion, you're supposed to speak out, you're supposed to engage in a discourse. And in this way, we arrive at ideas that can move us forward in a positive fashion. I wish everybody could get on TV and talk about how they feel. Maybe we'd learn something."

if there is no liberal media, why do we have professional journalists losing their cool, making personal attacks and arguing if someone doesn't like their way (such as far. 9/11)? Then why is stuff like this hidden or put to the backburner if it's against the liberal agenda. if denzel would have praised far. 9/11, then it would have been all over the place.

There is no liberal media because they were all cheerleaders for the Iraq war. Kerry's war record is more scrutinized than Bush's non-existent war record.
The only reason "liberal" media is being bandied about is so it can be more and more subservient to this current government. Why is Fox and talk radio so popular if the liberal uber-lords control things?

All that seems to have happened is that Washington and Streep had an argument about the bible.

I just want to say that just because someone refuses to see Farenheit 9/11 doesn't mean they are a Republican. I'm a Democrat and I think Moore is an ass.
Just sayin...
And, I love Denzel Washington as an actor. Who he votes for or what his beliefs are have absolutely nothing to do with me as a consumer. He's the shit. Period. People who stop listening to artists or won't see an actors body of work purely on their beliefs are idiots.
The only exception to this is (for me) is Michael Jackson. I can't enjoy his music anymore because I can't shake that whole "chester the molester" thing going on in my head.

If that is the case, then call me Idiot, I’ll wear that one proudly. A bad human being, is a bad human being. And bad human beings have nothing for me whether in film, music or what have you.
Let me ask you though, if the Beasties were suddenly to became all about White Power or some such garbage, would you still be a fan? I guess I'm a little sensitive, because I try very hard to be a conscientious consumer. That means, supporting artists I appreciate and respect and going out of my way to avoid those who are less than what I would expect. Fortunately, there are many amazing and respectable artists in the world, they just aren’t that popular.

Liberal media bias exists whether you agree or not. 85% of people that have graduated, or that are enrolled in Journalism school, consider themselves Liberal or "lean" to the left. It is impossible to argue that personal perspectives on politics would not interfere at some point throughout the careers of these journalists.
Also, the so called multinational corporations that "control" our minds and brainwash for the right wing are almost overwhelmingly left leaning. Most of the Board of Directors of these corporations are large donors to the Democratic Party. Here is one article I recently found...
http://www.nysun.com/article/1993
Lastly, Fox News and Bill O'Reilly are popular because it is the only outlet for conservatives to get a decent handshake in the televised political spectrum. Of course Fox News and Bill O'Reilly are going to seem conservatively biased to everyone who is liberal because everything else we see in Hollywood, the music industry and on T.V. is so far to the left. It's really not that surprising there is such a hatred for these mediums.

Well, first, duh, it's fake.
Second, If we have liberal media, how come they aren't coming forward and talking about the situation on Darfur (other than a 30-second piece every 3 weeks glazing over the issue) and saving the environment? How come they aren't talking about stories such as Bush wanting to sell national park land, Crotoan National Forest to loggers? How come they don't report on how shitty our air quality is and report on Bush's repealing of environmental laws that protected air quality? How come they never talk about Bush's tax cuts for the extremely wealthy? These are all fact (and quite liberal issues) and you never hear about it on the news.
Also, if the media is so damn liberal, how come the Clinton fiasco was aired 24/7? Every fucking day back in the late '90s it was some shit about Clinton and Monica and what's going on with that, where he put what cigar, what kind of presents he bought, what stains he left on what color dress. If they were TRULY liberal, don't you think they would have tried to kind of forget about this, maybe glaze over it and move on to issues/fiascos facing Republicans at that time?
They report on what's popular. It was popular to bash on Clinton in the late '90s because it's what got ratings. It's popular to bash on Bush and the Iraq war now, because it's what gets ratings. Whatever the public wants to hear/know about, it's what they spit out. They're puppets. To see what the general population thinks/cares about at any given point, you can go look at what the media is reporting on. So if they're "liberal" right now (which I don't think they are because there are a LOT more liberal issues they could be reporting on but don't), maybe it's because that's what's popular in our society.

I still think it's hilarious that the center-right Democratic Party is considered "left-wing" down there. Corporations supporting the Democrats are not "left-leaning," they're slightly less right-leaning than outright Republicans. The "liberal media" is a canard perpetuated by hardline right-wingers determined to paint themselves as victims even as they engineer the most viciously destructive political policies in the Western world.

Even if it's only television he wants to look at, FOX News isn't the only game in town. Dude can turn on MSNBC and see Tucker Carlson and Joe Scarborough at it. CNN Headline News has Glenn Beck. Novak was on CNN for 20+ years (and has now moved over to FOX, I guess). Media is sensationalistic, not "liberal" or "conservative." You can point out individual bias here and there to further your "liberal media" or "conservative media" agenda. But the big picture? It's just money. Whatever sells sells. Car on fire? Check. Missing cute blonde girl? Check.
Besides, the original post has been debunked as 100% false (Denzel said no such thing to Couric), so why are we even here?

lumping joe scarborough in with the rest of those wingnut blowhard twits isn't fair at all. scarborough country is an outstanding news and political discussion program. not only is joe extremely fair, down-to-earth, modest, self-deprecating and likeable, but he's really more along the lines of a conservative/republican who thinks independently, and is not afraid to take on those in his own party. he's not a fan of bush, cheney, the admin and republicans who attack democrats for 'lacking patriotism' for wanting to stop the surge, and the war. joe is a huge critic of the bush administration and the neo-cons. he certainly has a very realistic and grounded view of domestic politics, and geo-politics. in addition, he always will have an extremely balanced panel for the regular featured discussions, including joan walsh from salon.com, michael crowley from the new republic, richard wolffe of newsweek, katrina vanden heuvel from the nation, and of course the most well known independent, anti-war conservative, pat buchanan. and, joe not only blasts the bush admin, but he also can't stand fox news and specifically bill o'reilly. joe recently called him a 'political suck-up', and challenged o'reilly to a debate, over his obsession with nbc news and that it has a 'left-wing' slant, for simply calling iraq for what it is: a civil war.

i guess, compared to the fascist country the usa is turning into, people might look back on the media and remark about how "liberal the media used to be"...
and QueenAdrock said it best, so i don't have to reiterate that.
but if the media were truly "left", why is Chavez often vilified in any mention of his name in the press?
