"In a dramatic reversal of its previous position, the White House this week conceded that emissions of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases were the only likely explanation for global warming."

So maybe "...the Kyoto he decided to neglect" won't apply anymore.

I don't believe this to be true.

Why not? Did you read the article? I think The Guardian is a reliable source.

Of course the corporate US media is too busy with not-so-swift boat vets so you won't read about it there.

I just can't believe they would suddenly accept it. Its so not what they believe in.
I know its true, its just hard to swallow.

Gotcha!

Of course it is election season. The two couldn't be related could they?

They are so related. But any school kid could have told the president that this wouldn't suddenly get you the green vote after so much raping of the environmental laws.

The Bush administration have a number of objections to Kyoto, but the main stumbling block seems to be that Bush wants every country in the world to cut back CO2 whereas Kyoto allows developing countries to continue to pollute until they achieve a certain level of prosperity. The idea being that the ones who should clean up the environment are the ones who profitted from destroying it.

The real reason is that Bush does not want to pay for this, if he ignores the problem it becomes the next presidents issue to deal with. I believe I am right in saying that the US will not even meet its environmental obligations under the 1992 Rio environmental conference (which were to simply hold co2 output constant). A lot of countries including the UK are set to achieve this comfortably.

This whole issue represents a fundamental flaw in the principles of free market economics, global warming (if it is indeed linked to CO2) is a symptom of market failure - I think this is why a lot of right wing people bury their head in the sand over this issue. Bush aint going to ratify Kyoto.

BTW does anyone know Kerrys position on Kyoto? Would he ratify it?
