Another American intelligence official has been caught spying for Israel, passing on top secrets about Iran to empower Israel into manipulating United States military action against that country.
The American-Israeli spy is not the first and certainly not alone in stealing American secrets in order to influence US policies for the benefit of Israel. He is not even the most important. Scores of Israeli supporters spying for Israel occupy the highest posts in the American administration.
The new addition, just like Jonathan Jay Pollard, a former US Navy intelligence officer who pleaded guilty in 1986 to spying for Israel and was sentenced to life in prison is, by comparison, a small fish. One has to look beyond and above.
Unsurprisingly, the unnamed spy works directly for two of the three most important men at the Pentagon - Deputy Defence Secretary Paul Wolfowitz and Undersecretary Douglas Feith. Both men are well known for their fanatical support of Israel and profound hatred of Arabs and Muslims, positions that are well documented in their writings and comments over decades.
Anyone who thinks they have not themselves passed on tonnes of secret, classified intelligence reports on Arabs and Muslims to Israel probably awaits Santa Claus every Christmas.
Scores of people just as powerful sit inside the Bush administration cabinet, and before that in the Bill Clinton administration, quarterbacking for Israel. They conduct witch hunts for anyone or any country they deem hostile to Israel.
Henry Kissinger, one of the most notorious Arab haters, purged the State Department and Security apparatus of "Arabists" with the result that the US today finds itself unable to converse with the Arab world, let alone have a decent relationship with Arabs and Muslims.
What these people have done and are doing is the exact equivalent of practicing anti-Semitism against Jews - reverse discrimination conducted with total impunity. Yet, it carries a price other Americans pay.
This latest spy scandal provides proof of the role Israel is playing in prodding America into another military adventure in Iran and possibly Syria. Israel and its friends have lost their moral compass when they offer lives of American men and women to fight their wars.
This situation is not only morally abhorrent, filled with layers of double-standards, but constitutes a real danger to American national interests. The US government owes an explanation to the American people as to why it is ceding its entire Middle East policy-making to a client state such as Israel and her friends in America.
It should also explain why is it that supporters of Israel - to the exclusion of all other segments of American society especially Arab-Americans - should monopolise every lever of Middle East policy-making in the White House, the Pentagon, the think-tanks, the National Security Council, the State Department, and the Central Intelligence Agency, to name a few institutions of statecraft.
To be sure there are enough Jews who know this is wrong, but they, alas, dare not speak lest they are tagged as "self-hating" Jews.
The balance is so skewed that Israel is not only telling the US what to do in this region, but determining which wars and what sanctions America will impose on whomever Israel and her Washington spies designate as enemies.
There is little question Israel's high ranking spies have prodded the Clinton and then Bush administration to impose sanctions on Iran, Libya, Syria, now Sudan and any number of Arab and Muslim countries, as well as Iraq. Now they are pressuring Russia because it is helping Iran's nuclear programme. And they make sure Israel is safer without moving a single one of its soldiers to fight its dirty little wars.
Taxpayers' money
Particularly shocking is how punch drunk Israel and her friends in Washington have become. They cannot see they have won. Israel has taken most of Palestine. American tax payer's money is funding the construction of colonies dispossessing Palestinians.
Israel possesses 200 nuclear weapons and enjoys an American security umbrella even as it commands the world's fourth strongest army. This sort of blindness is double-edged.
Israel's Achilles heel lies in not knowing when enough is enough. That is why spying on America is poignant recklessness, more so as Israel's friends are already trying to portray the whole thing as a tempest in a tea pot.
"The notion of a trusted ally such as Israel betraying the US by taking secrets would be a major embarrassment for the Bush administration, especially coming just before the start of the Republican National Convention," the Los Angeles Times noted on Saturday.
Israel's American friends are just as blind. Wolfowitz and Feith, as well as scores of others like the notorious Richard Perle, another ardent Arab-hater and pro-Israeli fanatic, have led America into Israeli-designed quagmires.
Before he came to the Pentagon, Feith was a partner in a law firm with L. Marc Zell, a lawyer with a firm now based in Israel and one of the most vehement Israeli-American proponents of illegal Jewish colonies on occupied Arab territories.
The greatest blind spot of these folks is that they do no see that persevering in blindly serving Israel's every caprice and deepening hatred against Arabs and Muslims is just as morally abhorrent as being an anti-Semite.
Unlike suicide bombings, when it comes to hate-mongering, there is "moral equivalence".
