View Full Version : Purple heart band aids

Did any of you see the little band aids with purple hearts on them that some republicans were wearing?
When did it become acceptable in America for our Purple Heart decorations to be a political stunt for votes? When did veterans wounded in war become fair game for ridicule? When did slight wounds become props for political advantage? And this from Republicans (few of whom served in our military, and fewer who were wounded in war) who support a president who never went to a war that he strongly supported but took actions to avoid. This reeks of hypocrisy, and I am outraged.
The Associated Press reported: “The bandages were handed out by Morton Blackwell, a longtime GOP activist from Virginia, with the message: ‘It was just a self-inflicted scratch, but you see I got a Purple Heart for it.’”

These Republicans want Americans to believe John Kerry’s wounds were not serious enough to be taken seriously. Many military veterans resent their mocking of a Purple Heart recipitant and his decorations, charging the Republicans' behavior is reprehensible.
According to retired Gen. Merrill McPeak, former Chief of Staff of the U.S. Air Force, 3,700 Purple Hearts have been awarded in Iraq. Are Republicans mocking all 3,700 of our servicemen and women wounded in Iraq? Or only those they determine were not sufficiently wounded?
The Republican Party is out of control. Vicious and hateful, it is disrespectful and desperate, a political party that is now attacking America’s wounded veterans. And the leadership of this Party remains quiet. First they attacked John McCain, claiming the former POW was unfit to be President because he had been a prisoner in Vietnam; then they insisted that Max Cleland, who lost three limbs on the battlefield in Vietnam, did not sacrifice for his country; then they smeared John Kerry’s military service and dismissed his sacrifices for America. Now, Republicans are insulting all veterans who are Purple Heart recipients, every American wounded in a war.

Never could I have imagined this happening in America. Never have I witnessed antiwar demonstrators insulting military veterans as these so-called patriotic Republicans are insulting our wounded veterans. Never could I have imagined.

It was extremely stupid, but I am glad they did it. It shows their "support the troops" mantra is phony.

My worry is that many will not get the significance of this hypocrisy and actually think it is cute. This is without a doubt the shrewdest campaign I've ever seen. Karl Rove better get his suntan lotion ready cause it's going to get hot for him.

Rest assured, the Veterans and their families understood what it meant.

I'm a vet who still limps from my injury received in Vietnam. Many folks have asked if I was pissed about the purple heart bandaids, my truthful answer is not at all.
This is something I've come to expect from the slimeball bush camp, they will stoop to nothing, it will only come back and bite them in the ass.
Many folks claim that Kerry brought this on himself by drawing so much attention to his service record. My feeling is that Kerry has a lot of faith in America and never figured anyone would stoop so low, caught him by surprise. But the bushites are the ones who opened the door, with the remodeling of Kerry's campaign team fire is going to be fought with fire, expect many of bush's past misdeeds bought to light as the election draws closer. Big difference is Kerry's claims will be absolutely true.
It's really sad that the presidential race has come to this.

Hey, just cuz I'm almost 60 doesn't mean I have to listen to music as old as I am. :)
I like most all types of music except for that shit from the fifties.

I believe that Kerry recieved three purple hearts, right?

So, if one was self-inflicted that still meant that he was shot twice by enemy fire.

True, but one wasn't self inflicted. That's another Bush campaign lie.

Remember when it was McCain's service record that the Bush campaign slandered? Ah, the days of yore...

Remember when the Democrats slandered Bob Dole's military record in 1996, and brought up his self-inflicted purple heart?

Wait a minute, they didn't do that

Come on, who but bush would self inflict a wound by lighting off a hand grenade 20 feet away and just stand there?
This is the wound that's in question.
