Link to pending draft bill just type HR163 and hit search http://thomas.loc.gov/

Mandatory draft for boys and girls (ages 18-26) starting June
15, 2005, is something that everyone should know about. This literally
effects everyone since we all have or know children that will have to go if this
bill passes. There is pending legislation in the house and senate (companion
bills: S89 and HR 163) which will time the program's initiation so the draft can
begin as early as spring, 2005, just after the 2004 presidential election.
The administration is quietly trying to get these bills passed now, while the
public's attention is on the elections, so our action on this is needed
immediately. Details and links follow. This plan, among other things, eliminates
higher education as a shelter and includes women in the draft. Also, crossing into
Canada has already been made very difficult.

Actions: Please send this on to all the parents and teachers you know, and
all the aunts and uncles, grandparents, godparents. . . And let your children
know - - it's their future, and they can be a powerful voice for change!

This legislation is called HR 163 and can be found in detail at this website:
<http://thomas.loc.gov/> Just enter in "HR 163" and click search and will
bring up the bill for you to read. It is less than two pages long.

If this bill passes, it will include all men and ALL WOMEN from ages 18 - 26
in a draft for military action. In addition, college will no longer be an
option for avoiding the draft and they will be signing an agreement with the
Canada which will no longer permit anyone attempting to dodge the draft to stay
within it's borders. This bill also includes the extention of military service
for all those that are currently active. If you go to the selcet service web
site and read their 2004 FYI Goals you will see that the reasoning for this is to
increase the size of the military in case of terrorism. This is a critical
piece of legislation, this will effect our undergradates, our children and our
grandchildren. Please take the time to write your congressman and let them know
how you feel about this legislation. <http://www.house.gov/>
<<http://www.house.gov/>> <http://www.senate.gov/> <<http://www.senate.gov/>> Please also write to
your representatives and ask them why they aren't telling their constituents
about these bills and write to newspapers and other media outlets to ask them why
they're not covering this important story. The draft $28 million has been
added to the 2004 selective service system budget to prepare for a military draft
that could start as early as June 15, 2005. Selective service must report to
Bush on March 31, 2005 that the system, which has lain dormant for decades, is
ready for activation. Please see www.sss.gov/perfplan_fy2004.html
<<http://www.sss.gov/perfplan_fy2004.html>> to view the Selective Service System annual
performance plan, fiscal year 2004. The pentagon has quietly begun a public
campaign to fill all 10,350 draft board positions and 11,070 appeals board slots
nationwide. Though this is an unpopular election year topic, military experts
and influential members of congress are suggesting that if Rumsfeld's
prediction of a "long, hard slog" in Iraq and Afghanistan
(and permanent state of war on terrorism) proves accurate, the U.S. may have
no choice but to draft.

www.hslda.org/legislation/national/2003/s89/default.asp
<<http://www.hslda.org/legislation/national/2003/s89/default.asp>> entitled the Universal National
service Act of 2003, "to provide for the common defense by requiring that all
young persons (age 18-26) in the United States, including women, perform a
period of military service or a period of civilian service in furtherance of the
national defense and homeland security, and for other purposes." These active
bills currently sit in the committee on armed services. Dodging the draft will
be more difficult than those from the Vietnam era. College and Canada will not
be options. In December, 200 1, Canada and the U.S. signed a "smart border
declaration," which could be used to keep would-be draft dodgers in. Signed by
Canada's minister of foreign affairs, John Manley, and U.S. Homeland Security
director, Tom Ridge, the declaration involves a 30 point plan which implements,
among other things, a "pre-clearance agreement" of people entering and
departing each country. Reforms aimed at making the draft more equitable along gender
and class lines also eliminates higher education as a shelter. Underclassmen
would only be able to postpone service until the end of their current
semester. Seniors would have until the end of the academic year.

What to do: Tell your friends, Contact your legislators and ask them to
oppose these bills

Just type "congress" into the aol search engine and input your zip code. A
list of your reps will pop up with a way to email them directly. We can't just
sit and pretend that by ignoring it, it will go away. We must voice our
concerns and create the world we want to live in for our children and grandchildren.

Well, if those bastards in Ottawa have closed our border then the only thing to do is move before it starts. To that end I will be reserving space in my bedroom for mobile conscientous objectors. Only female draftees need apply. Room for two if needed.

You could get a job at McDonald's for two years, earn some cash then go to Mexico. There, with all the money you've saved, you can do some pretty big things.

Actually...technically they cant ask women to serve as they have yet to give us equal rights in the constitution. They havent passed the "Equal Rigths Amendment" so we cant be treated as equals in this situation...Probably the ONLY time I will be glad of this. The whole thing is shitty tho as I have many male friends in that age group.

I don't know whether you are correct or not but if you read the bill they have changed the wording specifically to cover men and women.

I did read it. and I still think it is incorrect. At least I hope.... :(

Hell, I hope I am wrong about the whole thing. I just turned 30 so it will not affect me directly but my little brother is 18 and my sisters are 14 and 16 so it will seriously affect them and I do not want to see them conscripted into the military to be used as gaurds for Haliburton convoys and oil fields. WW2 was an honourable fight but ever since then its like we start wars just to keep the military in business. Just read Eisenhower's speech http://coursesa.matrix.msu.edu/~hst306/documents/indust.html on the military industrial complex.

The war in Iraq has nothing to do with protecting our freedoms. it has to do with the vested interests of those corporations who control the current administration. If we were interested in actually fighting terrorism we would not be allied to Pakistan or the Saudis, long reputed to be a comfy womb for terrorists. If you are willing to enlist then what is stopping you? Go on, quit wasting time on message boards and suit up troop.

They should just draft people who are turning 65 years old, they can double dip, get free medical, they are already sufficiently pissed off enough to kick some ass and it takes the burden off of the freeways back here in the states for all us young good looking people. So put down your fucking canes and grab your guns Buitch.

One thing George W. Bush forgot to mention at the Republican National Convention was that, if reelected, he would soon bring back the military draft.
• “[VP Cheney] has said the US is considering military or other action against ‘40 to 50 countries’ and warns that the new war may last 50 years or more.”-- John Pilger, Daily Mirror, 1/29/02
• “We've failed to convince our allies to send troops, we've extended deployments so morale is sinking, and the president is saying we can't cut and run. So what's left? …at some point, we're going to need more troops, and at that point the only way to get them will be a return to the draft.”-- Rep. Charles Rangel (D-NY), Salon.com, 11/3/03
• “We're not going to reimplement a draft. There is no need for it at all.”-- Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, 1/7/03 (Translated: “The draft will start right after Bush is reelected.”)
• “Pending legislation in the House and Senate (twin bills S 89 and HR 163) would time the program so the draft could begin at early as Spring 2005 -- conveniently just after the 2004 presidential election!”-- Adam Stutz, Project Censored, 1/28/04
• “A little-noticed provision in a new federal education law requires high schools to provide names, addresses, and phone numbers of students to military recruiters. Schools that refuse to comply face losing federal education funding under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act.”-- Boston Globe, 11/21/02 (Now you know what they mean by “No Child Left Behind”.)
• “$28 million has been added to the 2004 Selective Service System (SSS) budget to prepare for a military draft that could start as early as June 15, 2005. SSS must report to Bush on March 31, 2005 that the system, which has lain dormant for decades, is ready for activation.”-- Adam Stutz, Project Censored, 1/28/04
So, if you are of draft age or you have children or grandchildren of draft age, or you care about someone of draft age; in other words—everyone—vote for John Kerry and send Bush back to Texas before he can do any more harm. His military misadventures have already caused thousands of deaths and torn apart the lives of tens of thousands of military families.

• “If you have a child who will be fourteen years old in the next few months, they could be on the battlefield before the end of a second Bush term.”-- Charles Cutter, Magic City Morning Star, 7/8//04

This proposed bill is highly unlikely to passed. It was introduced a year and a half ago and it will sit there and die. Rangel wanted a universal draft so that kids from rich white families would have to serve, instead of getting all their recruits from poor minority neighbourhoods.

There's only like 3 congressmen who would want it passed. Not even close to a majority (;)).

If the draft will happen, it's gonna be under different circumstances.

P.S. - Also, I think Bush doesn't want the American people to care about what's going on in Iraq. If the draft were to be passed, then that means everyone is affected and EVERYONE is angry and then his political career is over. As long as the public is apathetic, Bush can push any agenda he wants.

But consider this scenario: There's another terrorist attack, which is tied by the authorities to a single nation (like 9/11 to Afghanistan). The people demand vengeance, but "security experts" get are on the news saying that America can't respond because "our forces are stretched as it is." Would you be surprised if a large portion of the population demanded a draft? There are a lot of people like 100% Ill, Loppfessor, Tone etc. out there.

That's a valid point. But I think it would only happen if Bush is re-elected.

If we're under a Kerry administration than this stuff will just be wild-eyed fantasies.

P.S. - BOTTOM LINE: No matter what turn of events go down, keep your eyes pealed.
