There is rarely any praise for our leaders on here and I am no fan of Tony Blair, but I thought I would right to say that I think he should be praised for the strong stand the UK is making on environmental issues.
Blair has commited Britain to leading the way in Carbon emissions reductions, and while some of the polcies he has set out are likely to be to ambitious and unachieveable (like 10% of electricty generation from renewable sources by 2010), I think that he is making real steps in the right direction. It is important for some countries to take the lead on issues like this and show the countries that are burying thier heads in the sand that global warming can be fought at reletively low cost.
Britain is one of the few countries that will meet its Kyoto and Rio obligations (This is largely due to the change in UK fuel mix to favour the use of Gas) and seems to have a genuine desire to lead the world in emissions control.
Of course there is always more that can be done and oppoesition leaders have been critical about a lack of actual policies (not a fair claim in my view) but I for one am impressed.
