Just a hunch, but I think that they were joking.

According to a BB article I read in Spin in 1998 they went there in the mid 80's (Madonna tour 87 maybe) thinking they could fish out of the window (Led Zeppelin had a famous story doing this in the 70's). When they got there they found that The Edgewater did not provide nor allow this anymore. According to their manager (I think it was their manager if memory serves) he was in the room below them and when the BB's found out that the rules had changed they were so pissed they started tossing furniture out the window.

I know the story, its Led Zeppelin. Plant was fishing out of the window, he caught a fish and proceeded to preform a sexual act with a girl in the bath tub, using the fish. (pretty sure thats the jist).
