I went to the show in Seattle and it was...I take that back...would have been the best concert experience ever, had it not been for the head of tour security. I got there early so I could get my spot on the rail..and I did. I saw the signs that said no cameras, but I saw others with cameras, so I took mine out so I could take some pictures. Fuck..I was almost within arms reach of the beasties...I wanted to remember this experience and show my friends. Anyway, this big ass black guy comes up and says put it away...whatever...I did it...but when the beasties came out with instruments, in retro tuxes..I had to get a picture because it was one of the coolest things I'd ever seen. This guy comes up..takes my camera, tells me not to fuck with him and erases every fucking picture on my camera right in front of me while the beasties were playing. I couldn't believe that they would hire an asshole like this. I was upset...visibly...Adrock noticed, I know because he looked at me and kinda shrugged like "Whats going on?" (mind you, everybody is pumped except for me, because they were going into Paul Revere) I tried to explain and point out the asshole, but he said he couldn't hear me. I asked local security who he was, but I couldnt get a name...All they told me was that it was the tour's head of security. Even local security agreed it was fucked up. I tried not to let it wreck my night, but it just was always in the back of my mind whenever I saw the guy. So I found him after the show and told him that it was a fucked up way to treat fans. All I got was a "Fuck You"its illegal. I said whatever, I couldnt get the pictures back, but I wanted to let him know it was messed up, and I left. Illegal???! There were people smoking pot in the fucking audience!! Nothing against smoking pot, but c'mon thats illegal too!! Not to mention all the picture phones I saw that didnt get taken away! Its not like I had professional photography gear...just a cheap digital camera so I could take some pictures for PERSONAL use. I saw Weird Al last night...and even he lets his fans take pictures. BEASTIE BOYS...I DOUBT YOU'LL EVER READ THIS, BUT....GREAT SHOW, BUT THE HEAD OF TOUR SECURITY HAS GOT TO GO. HE IS TREATING YOUR FANS LIKE SHIT.

YOUR FAN,
Jeff

Sounds like that was Beastie Boys security. Not that it matters. When you're told not to take photos though and then you take a photo, you're going to get into trouble. It's usually house rules that are being enforced. Go along with it and all will be good.

I know it sucks, but what part of "NO PHOTOS" don't you get?

Anyway - I was at the Seattle show too, and it was the best show I've ever seen them do, it's too bad your night was wrecked.

I guess the part of No Photos I dont understand is what the big deal is...Its not like the Beasties cared, I mean a couple of times it was almost like they were posing for the shot. It seems to me like the head of tour security should be worried about bigger things than a fan trying to take a couple pictures. And it definately wasnt a local guy...I talked to the head local security guy and asked him who the man in the black hat was. Like I said, I have no complaints about the actual performance, It was one of the greatest I've seen. When they came out with Triple Trouble I had chills. It was the only time in my life that I can actually say I was starstruck. It was a great show. My only complaint is the security guys attitude. When I was waiting to talk to him, there was another kid who was in the same boat, except he took that kids memory card and wouldnt give it back...not to mention that he grabbed the kid. I'm sorry, but if the fan isnt getting violent with you where is the need to get physical?? And telling me...a fan, to fuck off when I'm trying to talk to you like a decent human being. That's unacceptable. I guess the lesson learned is that this is what happens when you're picked on as a kid...you grow up to be a prick, and get off on other peoples misfortune...and that's pathethic. Fantastic show otherwise. Come back soon!!!

That same black guy, who was with MMM blocking off people when he was hitting the stage told me to "mind your own buisness" cause i tried to snatch the setlist from his hand, lol! Security were twats, but did good jobs getting the drunk bitches out!

I get your point, and I don't think this was very professional of this person - whoever it was. I brought it up to management.

But on the flipside, like folks are saying, don't expect to get treated all that well when you are going against the rules, which you should already know, because it's printed right on your ticket.

In any case, no one working for us should be saying "fuck you" to fans there, even in cases where they might deserve it.

Miramanee,

The only thing thing that I am guilty of...other than trying to take pictures, was having a good time up on the rail, singin' along with my favorite songs. Right after he erased it I tried to talk to him and ask him why, and he just blew me off. Thats why I went and found him after the show, and as much as I wanted to yell at him, I didn't. He was much bigger than me, and I agree with you, yelling at him would do no good. Like I said before, I couldn't get the pictures back, so there was no point in yelling. I just wanted to let him know that that's a messed up way treat a fan. I was calm, told him that, and he pretty much didn't care, said fuck you and I was like whatever...and I left. I asked if there was anyone I could file a complaint with, but I couldn't get any answers. Thats why I felt the need to post my experience here.

I appreciate you contacting management. I sincerely mean it when I say that means alot to me, because when I tried to talk to people at the show, I wasn't able to do much. So thank you!!

Sometimes you gotta risk it, this is the first time I've ever been able to see the B-Boys, and who knows when I'll get a chance again. I wanted to have something to remember it by. Something I could show people, and say "Check out how cool the show was". Pictures are worth a thousand words, they tell the parts of the story that I accidently leave out. Sneaking in a camera is the only option...And to be on the rail was prime opportunity to get some great shots. If there was a way I could purchase pictures from the show I would...which gave me an idea.

I don't know if its feesable, but I see photographers in the front. Lets say at shows that there was a photographer in the front taking great pictures. people could sign up and pay at the merch booth, and have prints fron their show sent to them. Everybody gets great pictures, no one has to sneak in a camera, and everybody is happy. Or another idea would be to have those pictures from each individual show posted online and people could choose which prints they wanted to order. If their was something like that, I know I would be willing to pay for professionally taken pictures and I'm pretty sure everybody at the top of the arena would love good pictures. Anyway, I thought I'd throw that idea out there. Thanks again for contacting management...If there's an address I could write to, let me know, because I agree with what I read, actually hearing it from the person might help. Thanks again.

I was standing with some people next to you when you and the security guy were talking on the way out- so I vouch for him telling you to fuck off. Good luck with this- the other guy that came out seemed nicer, but didn't seem to help any. Honestly, I think that security guy must be with the band because I think I saw him in a picture someone posted from the Vancouver show. If he had your camera in his hand, guess he could've just held it until after the show. ? The same guy caught me with a flash too, but I was about 4 rows back so I guess he couldn't get to my camera. Then I was going to throw my 1 year old's BBoys shirt up to the stage (got the smile/nod on that one from MCA & Adrock- who wouldn't smile at a tiny Beastie shirt???), but that security guy kept watching me after the camera thing. Whatever- MMM signed it later at Chop Suey. Very cool. This was my 5th and favorite BBoys show ever, so the last thing I wanted was to get booted out.... Sorry about your card- that completely sucks.

granted I am assuming that this is a digital camera and that you have some type of memory card. If this is not the case then let me know. I worked in a photo studio that had just switched to digital. There is hope!!! We were constantly erasing pictures of clients that were not supposed to be erased. Anyway, if you can search the internet ie. google for "image recovery software"...i think http://www.mediarecover.com/software.html is pretty decent and only 30 bucks. you also need a card reader of some type. I have never tried it directly from the camera but in theory it should work too. anyway as long as you havent taken too many pictures after the card was erased you should be ok. Basically all that happend when the big douche bag deleted your pictures was the addresses to all of the pictures memory locations were erased not the actual pictures. If you look through every byte on the card..ie the image recovery software's job...you can then figure out where each file begins and recover them accordingly. It takes some time but like you said great memories man. Also another way to stick it to the man who thought he was so smart.

Ps you can also sometimes find some free demos or shit like that that can give you a hint if there are indeed any pictures on there. Let me know how it goes or whats up.

EDIT: mediarecover software has a demo that allows you to preview all of the deleted images to see if there are any decent ones

EDIT2: http://www.z-a-recovery.com/download.htm offers free software to recover all files on a camera card...bottom link on the page

Just like to say that is such a nice thing (finding all of that info out on photo recovery) to do for this poor guy, I hope it works.
There is hope for all of us... :D

I had my disposable camera ripped up in front of me at the Bremerton Beastie Boys show during the Ill Communication tour. It sucked. It had pictures of friends and family on it also.

BUT...

Dude, you deserved to have those pictures deleted and you are lucky they didn't take the camera and keep it.

There were lockers provided at the entrance for people who brought cameras.

THE TICKETS SAID NO CAMERAS! So you knew better than to bring it.
THE SIGNS AT THE DOOR SAID NO CAMERAS. So you knew not to take it in.

Yes, the guy who deleted your photos was with the tour...and he was JUST DOING HIS JOB!

I was mad when the same thing happened to me years ago but Ian explained things at the time.

The Boys as a group, or even the Capital Records label may have exclusive contracts with photographers, media outlets etc. that may be voided (I.E. NO PAYMENT or contract violations) if your bootleg pictures ever made it into print. Would you really want to ruin those contracts for them?

It is fully within their rights to control their own images.

As it stands, artists lose money on illegal downloading. They make money off of concert photos, merchandise, and ticket sales, and endorsements.

The boys don't do corporate endorsements (thank goodness!). They let fans download and listen to songs for free and were among the first to embrace mp3 technology. Tours cost a lot of money and they feed their crew three meals a day.

Now you want to void their photo contracts? No wonder the security guy was mad at you. He was simply protecting the boys. If you had his job, you would do the same thing.

I know it sucks, but you knew that what you were doing was wrong.

Hey, I saw that. You were being an ass and interrupting his conversation. You kept yelling at him that you wanted the setlist and the show hadn't even started. If I were him, I would have used some different words to you. :p

I thought the security was awesome and did a great job. They got me ear plugs and they didn't have to. They kept people off of my heads and knew how to remove people up top quickly. This was the best up front and center experience I ever had at a Beastie Boys show.

The only exception was the security guy who asked me how if felt to be "bopped from behind" (in reference to the kids behind me moving forward) after talking about a fans tits and asking if she had implants or not. Now that is inappropriate!
