New bombs-find seals off streets

A number of World War I bombs were discovered on a building site
More suspected unexploded World War II explosives have been found a day after a city street had to be cordoned off.
A contractor at Regent's Park Road in Southampton discovered more than 50 mortar shells on Wednesday.

On Thursday, police still at the scene replaced the cordon after a further six explosive devices were uncovered.

A spokesman from Hampshire police said bomb disposal experts would continue working at the site throughout Thursday night and Friday morning.

We found at least 60 or 70 in one big hole on Wednesday - and I'm positive there's a load more down there

Local residents are being asked to keep their movements within the 200m cordoned area to a minimum, and keep doors and windows closed as a precaution.

Work will stop at the site and cordons will be removed between 0630 BST and 0900 BST on Friday so that people can go to work and school.

"So far, more than 80 separate items of munitions have been uncovered, and because of its age and condition it is being treated with caution and therefore we are putting these extra measures into place to make sure everyone remains safe," said Chief Inspector Andy Golding.

It is thought the area was used to dump weapons following World War II.

Mortars examined on Wednesday by bomb disposal experts from Wiltshire were found not to be dangerous.

The mortars were found during building work on the site of an old vicarage.

"They were about three feet down - you wouldn't have found them gardening, lets put it that way," an Army spokesman told BBC News Online.

"We found at least 60 or 70 in one big hole on Wednesday - and I'm positive there's a load more down there."

At the end of the World War II huge amounts of ammunition were left over, and much of it was simply buried or dumped, he said.

Here's a couple of pictures I took from my house:

TV Crew interviewing police. Note: Road still blocked off to pedestrians and cars. This is why it seems quiet/deserted.
