Coming up from Richmond but never been to the Patriot Center, what's in the area around it, any good bars/restaurants, etc other than fast food crap?

And how's parking up there?

Thanks!

There are plenty of places to eat drink and be merry. All within a 10 - 15 minute drive. Parking may be a bitch though.

many places to be merry within walking distance?

Not really. I can only think of one bar that is walking distance, and I don't like it. Its called Fat Tuesday's or some shit.

I wouldn't say "clubs". But there are places where local bands play, bars that have DJs and small dance floors. Pool Halls. Shit like that. But They are all a 10 minute drive away (if that). I wouldn't say walking distance unless you don't mind walking like 20 minutes....each way.

I would recommed leaving a lot earlier....that would put you in the Springfield/Mixing Bowl area at about 6:00 which is a NIGHTMARE during the week much less on Friday night. Traffic in this area is no joke (esp Springfield area and then the beltway (n) ).....would hate for you to miss anything. (y)

You probably will get off before the Mixing Bowl from Richmond. Just take 95 to 123. But 95 is a bitch. So leave early.

my wife is a teacher, and the first of every month/quarter i am slammed at worked, so its a bit hard to announce " i'm out of here, going to see the beastie boys"

we'll be alright, rt 1 down here still has some bridges washed out due to the flooding (especially around kings dominion)

Hey folks, maybe y'all could help me out with some advice. I'm going to this show to table for Music for America (come say hello :) ), taking a bus down from NYC (and then back again Sat to attend the MSG show with hubby). A friend who lives in Alexandria is kindly picking me up after the show.

Any advice on where this friend should meet me after the show?? I'm sure traffic will be a bit crazy, and there's probably no chance he'd find parking if he wanted to come before the show ends? What would be easy for him? I don't mind walking a bit.

Thanks so much for any help.

There is a map of the campus. Pick a spot.

There is a shopping center across the way (off of braddock i think) and there is a gas station there, and the walk isn't too terrible......10 minutes.

Ah, thanks, that sounds perfect.

Thanks for the map, too - I had found a map of the campus but oddly the Patriot Center wasn't marked on it (maybe an old map).

If you go to that shopping center (I'm pretty sure its right off of Braddock Rd.) if you head towards the back there is that bar I mentioned earlier, called fat tuesdays. I don't know how it will be on Friday night though.
Last time I went there the "bouncer" told us that we would just be wasting our money because the crowd was all old people. Good luck with whatever you choose to do.

Thanks. I'm actually sort of eyeing that pond across the street now. :)

I expect we'll be heading back to Alexandria to hang with my friend's GF and another old friend of ours.

I also found this site helpful:

http://www.patriotcenter.com/

It crashed my browser (Safari/Mac), but I was able to browse the site on IE/Mac.

I swung by the box office today, and I can't see how parking will be any problem at all (and free, assuming the cost is included)....the arena is mostly surrounded by bunches of parking lots/spots.

Don't know if that "pond" is the best place, as it might just be by a road with no place to wait around; if not there, the other suggestion would probably be at the Box Office parking lot (tiny - holds only twenty cars so you can easily recognize it). This is located at the SouthEast corner (I believe) of the venue, and is perhaps at the lowest level of the arena around back, to the right of the loading dock where the band enters. If you think about it, everybody will be *leaving*, while your friend will be entering, so there should be no prob finding/getting to the Box.

*FLASH!!!*

I hate to hi-jack this thread for a moment for my own selfish purposes....but is there ANYBODY out in Beastie Land who can spare/sell 1 Floor seat for this show?! [I apologize if there's a section on this website reserved specifically for such requests] The single tix today were high up behind the stage, and those seats are, well....against my religion. Although I'm new to these boards, I believe you can PM me privately, if you can help out a fellow fan; I'll reply with my contact info etc. How about you, Yauch? Do you have any tickets for this show?!

And is anybody in Fairfax hosting a post-concert bash??? I don't see GMU as being some major party campus....but maybe we have some creative Beastie fans in the area!

Thank, y'all!

I live in DC, and there isn't a whole lot out there within walking distance from the Patriot Center. There are some bars about 10 minutes away in Arlington, but if you're in town and want to go to fun places, I'd suggest driving or taking a cab into DC to Adams-Morgan/18th Street area (20-30 minutes max depending on traffic) -- that is probably the most "fun" area in town. You can also take the metro from GMU and then transfer to the Red Line and go to Woodley Park/ Adams Morgan metro. I'd also say that for the college-mid-20's people, going out in Georgetown is pretty fun and that is probably 10 minutes, and you can take metro to Rosslyn and walk over the bridge or to Foggy Bottom and walk as well.

If you want more detailed suggestions, please feel free to PM.

The only problem with going to Georgetown or DC is that the show will probably end at like 11:00ish (im just guessing) and getting to the metro and yadda yadda yadda will take forever. And then you have to worry about taking the metro back before the last train at 2 (I think its 2). So that is like a 3 hour window and more than half of it will be just commuting.

I live in Fairfax, and am planning on hightailing it to Arlington right after the show ends. The metro runs until 3am (that's when the last trains leave metro center in DC), so as long as you find a place (downtown) that's open until 3, you'll be able to enjoy a few hours of partying after the show. If you want to go downtown (and I agree with lrf1211 that there's way more options there), then I'd take a cab straight to Georgetown, since that will be the closest/quickest, and there are plenty of cool (albeit slightly younger) bars & clubs there. Dupont Circle and Adam's Morgan are also good options.
