View Full Version : Jam Master Jay Tribute

RIP JMJ

Had sent this to Yauch, anyone else think it would be worthwhile??

Adam Horowitz of the Beastie Boys, to The Associated Press:
"It's a terrible loss ... If Jam Master Jay and Run-DMC hadn't looked out for us way back when, I don't know where we'd be now."

Since it will be 2 years this October since Jam Master Jay was tragically killed it would be nice to have a tribute be part of your October shows. I realize that you all will be performing at the VH1 Hip Hop Awards show but I thought that maybe something a little more was in order. Since your current album owes so much to the early days of Rap music (and ya'll knew him) I thought it would only be appropriate to give back some positive feeling to one of the people who changed the game. Jay was always a positive force for all of us who grew up listening (my d.o.b. 8/5/1969) to rap in the early 80's and based on that I still can't believe the WAY he died.
I also think it would go a long way towards recognizing the pioneers of Rap in the same way that pioneers of Rock get respect; and showing the young listeners that there is a value to the music that laid the foundation for today's artists. Jay was always someone who made the music fun and I think you guys are still most definitely tapping into that and you have a DJ with skills who taps into that as well. I do have some ideas of how this could be incorporated into your live shows and would love to speak to any one of you about it. I understand that this is probably unlikely but nobody ever got anywhere without trying.
As a long long time fan of both Beastie Boys and Run DMC I would like to say thanks for all the music. I have tickets to the Worcester, MA show which will be about the 7th time I have seen you guys and look forward to a great show.

"We're not talking night, we're not talking day
But we're talking bout Jam Master Jay"
--Thanks for your time, Kevin

So you wanna use JMJ's death as a key for you to meet the Beastie Boys? Thats kinda crass.

They did a tribute show a while back in Vegas. And they have also talked about him in many interviews. Why do they need to talk about him in one show in Mass? I don't get it.

I guess your asking them to remember him, like all those whack mc's that take time to remember 2 Pac, Biggie, and Eazy-E every damn show.

Anyways, I have much respect for JMJ. He was my inspiration to be a DJ when I was kid. But.... I'm not using that to meet with the B-Boys.

Never asked to phsically meet them. Don' need to. Just think that they should pay some back based on their quotes and what I see as lacking in getting the old music respected. And I was motivated by some ideas that I had about what would be a cool way to honor Jay's and Run DMC's contribution. So I could have just pm'd them the ideas and they could use them or not. It was about being excited about the impact of the music.

And I never said that they should talk about him at 1 show in MA. It would be good if they used a show or a few shows in October to recognize his passing since that was the month that he was killed.
As far as the whack MC's part, I have no idea what your beef is there. Why can't people pay respect to those that paved their way?
Thanks for all your positivity.

I see wot your doing mate, good luck. I'm only 21, got into the music past Run DMC's hayday but i understand their contribution and love their music. Wot Jay did was just awesome and so positive, sounds real fresh to me, even now. I have a few live recordings from their TTFB europpean shows this summer, most of them include MMM scratchin' "Jam Master Jay, Rest In Peace", which i thought was nice. In fact quite a few artists have put references to the great man in their songs since he unfortunately died. Good to see people appreciate.

thanks man you are exactly what I am talking about. You are 21 and taking the time to go back and listen to this stuff which is rare. I just thought Beastie Boys could help that type of thing along. Because it happens in rock music all the time but it happens so much less in rap music because rap is so based in what is the new flavor. It is usually uncool to listen to anyting that came out past last month. Thanks also for letting me know that Mixmaster Mike is up on it. That makes me think they get it.

Pay what back? The Beasties have using RUN DMC samples in their music for decades. They have always gave them props in interviews, award shows, ect. I just think that your post was moronic. My bad. Do your homework. I've been a RUN DMC fan and a Beastie Boys fan since 1986, and I don't need a JMJ shout out at a show. The Beasties have expressed their feelings about JMJ. Chill.

i agree that the bboys give much respect to RUN DMC as well as to others but sampling someone isnt really giving them props, when someone samples they just want to make their song sound dope.

Why you so against this idea? Personally i feel your the one being moronic. The guy had an idea, he shares it with us, and you rile him for it, not nice. At the end of a day, any tribute to the lege would be appreciated. If you as a fan feel that you don't want to hear a tribute then thats fine, but your not the only one. Others have opinions too, and would probably appreciate this. How can a tribute be a bad thing?

The hip-hop that was being pioneered back in the 80's even early 90's in my opinion was so fresh and so much better than what we get now. I totally hate the Gangsta Rap image (Eminem, Dre, Snoop etc.....) but even NWA were producing some wicked tunes back in the day! Now it seams sorta stale and stuck in a rut, needs some injection of enthusiasm, not just manufactured rappers.

Because they have many tributes for him already. Jeeze, should they do a tribute for every dead hip-hop pioneer at every? Come on, get real. The only reason I thought this guys idea sucked because he used JMJ's death as a lame attempt to meet the Beastie Boys and "share ideas with them". The guy is a ass-clown. I just wanted him to know.

And yes other people have their opionions.... as do I, and my opionion is that their opionion sucks!

Who are you to question my intention. You are not even intelligent enough to argue your point without silly namecalling. Which is really disheartening based on what band this website belongs to. The bottom line is that MMM is doing something relating to what I was talking about so I am happy and satisfied about that. You and your childish taunts has really mocked Jay's life and the spirit of the music so this was really a waste of my time.

Still having no need to meet them or anyone like you.

Hey douche bag, your doing well with your first nine posts. Keep up the good work. I'd keep this up with you but I gotta get ready for the four Beastie Boys shows I'm going to this week. When I get back I'll try to keep this battle going , but I'll just have to get back on the road again because I'm going to the Montreal and Long Island shows. I'll try to find some time in with you somewheres, don't worry. Peace.

Anyone find it ironic that the first words of this post is "hey douche bag," and the last word is "peace"? Isn't that kind of an oxymoron? Doesn't the douche bag reference negate any "peace" you would be sharing?

Me being sarcastic went over your head. I apologize for that. When I said "peace" I didn't actually mean it. It was me actually saying "fuck you". Sorry, it didn't come off right.

Can't wait to see the next time you suggest something on this board, no positive comeback from me i'm affraid, even if it is a good idea. Can't you just try and spread the love instead?
