emailed friend from college who now works with athletic dept at GMU to get some info on the Patriot Center (includes directions for those driving from points South):
"I was told the Patriot Center sells beer for non college sporting
events, so drink up. The best bar (and really only thing right beside
campus) is called Brion's grille - it is sort of like their Amedeo's
except more traditional bar food (burgers, sandwiches, salads, steaks,
etc.) than Italian - owned by a former Mason BB player. The food is
excellent - if the owner Brion is there - tall guy, tell him I sent you.
A lot of the menu items are named after coaches and administrators -
maybe one day I'll get one.
I'd get off 95 at the Occoquan - I think it is exit 160 - take highway
123 north all the way to campus (about 20 miles). At the Braddock road
intersection, if you turn right before the light - Brion's grille is in
the shopping center (called University Mall). There is a Giant Food
market, McDonalds, and a couple of banks. You can also turn right at
the light and then turn into the shopping center.
At the light, you'll turn right, and the next intersection you turn left
to get to the Patriot Center.
Other alternatives - at Braddock Road, go straight, and in about a mile
or two, you'll be in downtown Fairfax - there will be an Irish pub on
your right as you go down a hill. I haven't been there yet, but it
looks cool. There are bunch more a few more miles away, but I imagine
you want to stay sort of close. I think there is an Outback on Braddock
Rd if you keep going past the turn for the Patriot Center. "
