To kickoff the performance, the Crew Cameraguys were struggling near the concourse level to get enough cable slack for their opening sequence. Beasties Security were seen directing people AWAY from that particular concession bar, as Al "Big Hair" Fredo was not to be missed; funny to note that NONE of the fans recognized what was actually going on.
MMM kicked off his opening mix (if I heard correctly) with a taste of Purple Haze around 9:45, and the band entered to 'Triple Trouble' at 9:50pm wearing their GREEN jumpsuits (dunno why somebody thought they were yellow). At the end of the song, Adrock and the others gathered around to give props to MMM, admiring him, and surely building his ego....heh heh!
'Sure Shot' came to a grinding halt after only 15 seconds, as the band played around for a minute. "Steve and Tim, turn UP the Mic! Turn up the spotlight!". With video of the fighting kittens displayed on the five video screens (three angles on MMM's stand, and one raised on each side), the band jammed to 'Super Disco Breakin'.
The band took the time to greet the crowd. "I SAID....is DC in the House?". Another added "Is Virginia in the House???", which ofcourse garnered a nice roar from the crowd composed of old-schoolers and the teenie bops. Then a few more names were dropped: "Bethesda?". And with a chuckle, "Chevy Chase (Maryland)?". "All that shit (other towns)".
'Root Down' was bad ass as always, with the Brooklyn Bridge included as just some of the footage shown. And VERY interesting to note: this show had NO MOSH PIT....until the very last song!!! Certainly not by 'Body Movin', which I believe followed 'Posse in Effect'.
Now the BBoys taunted MMMike: "Turn the mutha fucka on, Mix Masta Mike!", as if to say "dude, it would help if you turned your gear on first!". "Turn it up so the People can see.". See? And not hear?! Tucked in nicely was a backing video of Stevie Wonders band playing, as if they were the backing musicians.
'Time To Build' (one of my personal favs off the new album) was absolutely crisp and loud. I was surprised yet pleased when they added "That's the first time we did that (shit)". The one minute of 'Shake Your Rump' is no less than bad ass as well, with the crowd drowning the arena with a collective 'hoooooooo!'. LOVE the vibing Bass!
MMM entertained the crowd by seeing how quickly he could jump between his turntables, even fitting in some encouraging "bring it on" hand gestures to the crowd as he mixed. He played with his records behind the back, through the legs, and ended it by stopping the last disc with his nose! :) Hearing the samples of "It Takes Two" is always lively. 'Ricky's Theme' and 'Sabrosa' were played before 'Open Letter to NYC'.
By this point, the band had switched into their gray t-shirts, with Mike D wearing one that labeled him "President", Adrock boasting a handkerchief in hand as "Scorpio" (o's replaced by hearts), and MCA playing the role of "Hamburgler"! MMM had his "Scratch People" shirt on, to match suit. The glitter glasses were brought out.
For the wedding band interlude, the tuxedos were the gray ones.
MCA: "Yo, is anybody voting for Bush?", met with some laughs and some boos and hisses. And the singalong to "Paul Revere" was powerfully exciting '....with a stickball bat'. Another break to talk found Mike D standing over Stage Left pointing to the floor, and proclaiming "I know MY constituency! They already took Dance (as in the Dance category)", as the band broke into "Brass Monkey"....clearly the crowd favorite as the most commercially recognized Beasties song. Once again, props given to MMM, and the comment "I know it's a Family show....but HE's got NUTS!".
'3 MCs and 1 DJ' showed video games such as Frogger on the screens, and was followed by 'Watchya Want', and 'Ch-Check It Out'. During this song, Mike D stopped the track during the line "....sport that FRESHHHH", and held up an index finger asking MMM and the audience if they could see the finger, and to wait for the cue before breaking back into "....SHHHH attire!". Hilarious. "Thank you very much, VIRGINIA! We Luv Ya! Peace!", as they departed the stage.
Section 106 got the wonderful close up experience during Intergalactic, with Beasties Security once again guarded all sides. MCA smacked some hi-fives to some fans as the band disappeared and the houselights came on. My reaction was to see how many people were rushing down the stairs and out to their cars....and their were PLENTY of fans not in the know....
They came out after the taxi delivered the old men back to the mainstage ;), and 'Gratitude' got a nice response. Money Mark wore his matching shirt which read "From Here To Gardena (California)", and yes, he did jump waaay higher than Bob's Mongrels did! Alfredo was decked out in his "Trespas" shirt while banging the congos.
With the houselights on, the band said "We just wanted to say Hi, before we say Goodbye!", and they TORE into "Sabotage" as their final song of their visit to the Patriot Center. And as mentioned earlier, this was the first and only time that a mosh pit was formed. I actually jumped into it when I found it, and survived with no broken noses etc. I will say one thing about the mosh pit: although a lot of fans may not like it, it goes with the territory at such a show. And regarding injuries, you know what? It's not the people bouncing around that do the most damage....it's the people who get angry and SHOVE you forcibly back into the dangerzone that create the most danger for all in the area. To ensure little blood loss, please simply just maintain a perimeter for these people to bounce....don't get violent when you don't need to be. Besides, how can you NOT bounce around to Sabotage on the Floor? Are you supposed to just stand there?! Imagine if the BBoys themselves sang Sabotage while sitting in three tall chairs....it doesn't have the same effect.
After the show, the band emerged in different waves from the loading dock about one hour after the gig ended. Adrock came out with Fredo, MCA hanging with Money Mark. MCA also stopped to sign autographs for a few fans on the 'hidden' side of the dock, right by their white vans which carried them off to the airport for their flight back home to the N. Y. C. & MSG....
Kudos to the band AND to the Patriot Center staff for making this a safe, enjoyable and worthwhile experience....
[Editor's note: these notes were simply scribbled down on paper, and thus there will be some discrepancies from the actual quote or order of songs, several titles perhaps being omitted. But clearly, the ONLY reason I am sharing these notes is not because I'm fan who wants to share this with fellow fans, but rather so that I might be able to SCORE A COPY of BeastieFromDC's A+ recording on CDr!!! Hook me up with a copy of this, please!!! ;) Just teasin' - I hope you all enjoyed some of the details as posted above. Feel free to add anything I missed or other comments below]
