1 2 Oh My God

My recap of the MSG show.
PRE-BEASTIE STUFF:
I arrived at MSG early in hope that my "Floor Seat" ticket really meant "General Admission." No luck. So I spent my time sitting around in Section 7, right by the aisle, glaring at the lucky chosen ones in GA and getting pissed off I'm not there. They had 2 barricades up, with Security Guards standing in between them, so there was pretty much no chance of moving up to the pit.
By the way, if anybody was sitting around me, I was that chick in the anti-Boston, pro-Yankee halter top that had "1918" written in big, red numbers. I was that crazy, hyperactive chick who spent the entire show jumping around, rapping and dancing in the aisle.
Security to get inside MSG wasn't that tough. They barely even checked me. I totally could have brought my camera. I saw a bunch of people with theirs. A couple people near me had video cameras and were taping bits of the show right with the security guard nearby, facing them.
Around 7:30, they had a dog show. I wasn't really paying that much attention, but the dogs looked cute. I spent the entire time checking the Yankee score on my phone. So were a lot of people, apparantly. After they won, you could hear chants of "Let's Go Yankees!" circulate the Garden. This continued after the show too. Yay, Yankees!
I've heard about Talib Kweli a lot, but I've never really heard his music before. He is awesome! He has real nice flow. But the beginning of his set didn't sound too good from where I was sitting, 'cause the mic was turned on way too loud, and the turntables were too low. But, they eventually fixed that. He had me dancing and swaying, but I kinda felt weird because it was still a little empty in my section. Agh!!! I miss dancing in the pit!!!
One song had a cool beat set to the Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby". It sounded hot! He also did A Tribe Called Quest's "Award Tour", and started freestyling about the Beasties, and New York, and how the Red Sox suck. He also did that song he does on Kanye West's album ("Get Em High").
THE MAIN ACT:
On the video screens above the stage, they showed Mix Master Mike, walking through the Garden, about to go to the stage. He opened up the show in usual fashion, scratching on the turntables, getting people hyped up. The "Rapper's Delight" beat starts playing and the whole place starts screaming. It's the Beasties! They've finally arrived, and they launch into "Triple Trouble".
The video screen alternated between showing the Beasties and showing some random clips. During that song, they had this cute one I saw on the Internet, where this little kitten's standing up, waving his paws, and this older cat is watching him and getting annoyed. I don't think they showed the end of that clip where the cat lunges at the kitten, though.
Being that I'm pretty short, I really couldn't see much on stage. Plus, I have bad eyesight. So, I'm sorry I can't provide much detail on what was happening on stage. I believe they were wearing green Adidas track suits, but I can't be sure... bad eyesight. They later had a costume change and wore these red t-shirts. I don't know what they said, but someone next to me said MCA's had something about Mahjong on it. I'm really not sure.
In between some songs, they'd show more videos on the screen. There was one making fun of Bush. They also had one taken of fans right before the show. One of the fans was this girl who starts singing "Fight For Your Right To Party". Um, when was the last time the Beasties did that one? A lot of the audience had the same reaction I did. Anyway, the video also showed Chris Rock, who I guess was backstage. He named some of his favorite Beastie songs... the only one I can remember was "High Plains Drifter". They also had a backstage clip of Flava Flav. FLA-va FLAV!!!!
Doug E. Fresh appeared for "Time To Get Ill" and beatboxed. Shit was off the hook.
Mix Master Mike didn't remix the songs as much as he did the last time I saw them (2001), so the Beasties didn't get lost as much. They did have to restart Brass Monkey, though. "Root Down" was mixed the same way it was when I saw them in '98, with the Sugarhill Gang's "Apache" playing in the middle, and the Beasties freezing into poses along with the beat (You know, that song from Fresh Prince that goes "Tonto! Jump on it! Jump on it! Jump on it!"). Other remixes: "Pass the Mic" was mixed with Jay-Z's "Dirt Off Your Shoulder". I also heard the beats to Lil' Kim's "The Jump Off", "Pass That Dutch" by Missy, "Move Your Body" by Nina Sky, "Nothin'" by Noreaga... I forgot what songs they were mixed with, though. I'm forgetting a lot of things, ain't I?
Of course they did a "Paul Revere" sing-along. It's not a show without it.
I can't remember much of their onstage banter. They were saying stuff about glasses (I'm not sure which Beastie was wearing them). Mike D. said something about having to get to his job at Fed Ex. They mentioned that DMC was there. Right before "Time To Get Ill", they each claimed areas of the Garden. MCA had the people on the right side of the stage, Mike D had the center section. Adrock goes to the left side and says, "And this side... is for the beautiful people." Something like that.
Other songs I heard:
Body Movin'
3 MCs and 1 DJ
An Open Letter to NYC
Ch-Check It Out
Ricky's Theme
Something's Got To Give
So Whatcha Want
Right Right Now Now
Sabrosa
Sure Shot
Posse in Effect
Hello Brooklyn
Shake Your Rump
For the encore, the Beasties appeared in the audience, way up in the higher seats. They performed "Intergalactic" from up there. Lucky people!!!
They then appeared on the stage to do "Gratitude". For the final song, Adrock goes, "This song is dedicated to George W. Bush," and they launch into "Sabotage". Funny stuff.
POST-SHOW:
While being herded out of the Garden like cattle, down the turned-off escalators, I hear something that sounds like somebody falling. A group of people suddenly come tumbling down! They crashed into me, but I grabbed the side of the escalator and held on for dear life. They continued rolling down the stairs, plowing through people 'til they hit bottom. One of the guys, this tough-looking, tattooed, shaved-head guy, he's in the pile and is pissed off at another guy. They get up and start throwing punches, going at it for 5 minutes. The shaved-head guy's girlfriend keeps screaming for them to stop. He ends up with a black eye. Everybody's held up on the escalator, afraid to go down. Crazy shit! Yauch would not approve.
Anyway, that's about it. This is the first time I've had floor seats. For the other Beastie shows I've been to, 2 of them I was right in front of the stage, and the other, I was way, way, way up in the boonies. Those first 2 shows mentioned have spoiled me. I'm going to Nassau, and I WILL be up front and center. So I could actually see what's going on. But, I still had mad fun, though, dancing around to everything, gettin' sweaty. All I need is good music to dance to, and I'm happy. :)
