"There has been a request by the American military to the British military, not a political request from the US president to me," Blair said the day after Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon announced Britain was considering the move.
"No decision will be taken to re-deploy British troops unless it is clear militarily that that should and can happen," Blair said after a Downing Street meeting with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.
Deployment started today

It's pretty terrible. The speed at which it happened was ridiculous. The black watch got moved before Blair had even responded to the parliamentry questions on the matter. Still, at least it stops them soaping up the "dirty war" for popular consumption now 'our boys' are closer to the shit.
Deployment started today Are you sure? (http://news.scotsman.com/latest.cfm?id=3648381)
Confirming the US request on Monday, Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon said a decision would be taken by chief of the defence staff General Sir Michael Walker by the middle of the week.
Defence sources, however, suggested that was unlikely to come today.
Even Howard's against the US on this one.
Tory leader Michael Howard said: “We don’t have a reserve force in southern Iraq for fun. It is there for a purpose.
“There is no doubt that the removal of the reserve – and we haven’t been told there are any plans to replace it – will expose our troops to greater risk.
“If there is a compelling justification for us to accept that greater risk, then we will support that deployment but we haven’t had it yet.”
I think the "compelling justification" is nothing more than GWB looking for votes
...there is suspicion over President George Bush’s appeal for help is shared even by some normally loyal backbenchers who backed the war.
With the presidential election a fortnight away they fear Mr Bush simply wants to refute opponent John Kerry’s claim that US isolation has left American troops carrying the can.
And old Tony's still lying through his crooked, yellow teeth
Mr Blair insisted last night that the request for assistance had come from the US military, not the White House.
“This has been a request by the American military to the British military, not a request politically from the US president to me,” he said. how stupid does he think we are? US military success = support for US govt decision = vote Bush! What a dolt.
