Does no one mosh anymore? The Austin show last night had the tamest General Admission crowd I've ever been in! A few of us up front tried to mosh, but no one else seemed into it. The Beastie Boys rocked! But the crowd was too stoic for me. How can you stand still with all that incredible energy around you?!?

I posted this in the Atlanta thread because there was question about the Beasties personal views on crowd surfing, moshing, groping and such.
But i'll post it here too since it seems appropriate.
Now granted, these were there official views in 1995...but here you go.
OK...Here is the what the Beasties Boys said in the Official Tourzine from the Quadrophonic Tour in 1995.
EMERGENCY LIFESAVING TECHNIQUES - Mosh Pit Don't and Do's Presented by the Beastie Boys
DON'TS
1. Don't Elbow, Kick, Punch, Thrash, Smash, Skank...or do any other dance that can only be performed at the expense of others. Respect all peoples, not just yourself!
2. Don't Float! Unless you're a certified waif* AND, as Bikini Kill fanzine reminds us, "Don't think that 'cuz you are in the pit that you can get away with grabbing girls' breasts or putting your hands down their pants or undoing their bras, etc., etc. A girl has as much right to mosh as anyone else and just 'cus she's slamming up against you doesn't mean she is in LOVE with you."
3. Don't Encourage Floating! Don't offer potenetial moshers a stirrup -- you're not a horse! Floating also leads to being passed over the barricade, which usually involves injury, ejection or humiliation at the hands of the authorities.
4. Don't Kick Up Dirt! Or tomorrow morning you'll have black boogers --plus it's wack! (This rule may not apply at arena shows but follow it anyway.)
5. Don't Taunt Security! They're only doing their job, so why don't you do the same and act like a homo sapien!
6. In Short, Don't Be A Knucklehead! Just because you're a jock, ex-jock, or would-be-jock doesn't mean that this is just another game. Save the macho bullshit for American Gladiators tryouts, tough guy.
DO'S
1. Do Help People When They Scream "HELP!" Or Fall Down! Don't just stand there grinning like an idiot! Take charge of a bad situation, tell people to mellow out and help the disadvantaged party to their feet. Be Pro-Active --and not just in the pit! Don't let hassles happen anywhere on the premises. If you want hassles, take it to the Marines.
2. Do Something Constructive With Your Time & Life! Be creative within your own space. Don't infringe on other people's right to enjoy themselves. When the band starts to play, don't act like your mom's at a K-Mart sale and stampede the joint. Do yourself a favor and learn how to really dance a real dance step... A) Pogo B) Go-Go C) Smurf D) Breakdance E) All of the above.

Austin kids these days are more likely to stand in a circle having a conversation during a show than they are to mosh.

Moshing is for small minded people who don't know how to act like adults. They have no real game and rather than rely on wit, they break through social tensions by acting like 12 year olds.
I was up front at the Austin show when the group started trying to mosh (idiots!) Then some guy brought out a baby on his shoulders right to where the little boys were slamming into each other (even stupider!)
Thanks to security for quickly ripping that guy a new one.
Personally I was flossing my fly gear and busting out with the smurf on a couple of ladies when the little boy pit invaded my personal dance space. You know I've got some pretty far out moves and I was afraid of twisting an ankle with people flying around and all.

I was on the floor for the Philly show and had a great time, everyone was dancing and having a blast. During sabotage a couple of mooks around me started moshing and it annoyed me so much. I'm six foot two, 250 pounds and it just seems so dumb to me to run into eachother/throw yourself around/bang into other people. And I saw a bunch of little girls and guys getting thrown around, one totally got hit right in the schnoz, and they didn't really seem too into it. Plus, it seems even more silly since the Beastie boys themselves are 100% against violence (especially senseless violence, like smashing a little girl in the nose) and they dedicated the song to Bush, basically to end some of the violence going on in the world right now. Dancing in GA is great, moshing is just too stupid.

I also was at the Austin show and had a awesome front row position and then this annoying guy started crowd surfing almost taking my friend ( a female) down with him... she still has a bump on her head where he elbowed her. Thank god the security took him out... it only took them a few songs.
I personally was there to enjoy the show not get beat up by some guy who wanted to play "guess how much I weigh" with the occupants of the general admission area. My position in the front row was already lost though.

The do's and don'ts of moshing above is pretty much entirely from Bikini Kill's old fanzine. It was also republished in the zine/guide when the guys played the second (?) Lollapalooza.
Like everyone above said, moshing sucks. If you're really into it go see a band that encourages it. Rap does not. The Beasties do not. And as you have witnessed live, and on this board, neither do their fans.

As a concert goer it is your job to know the crowd and what type of dancing is appropriate.
Also, I don't know how to dance I'm a poor white boy that grew up in the burbs. What the hell is the smurf I've heard the beastie boys mention it. While we are at it what is the Patty Duke?

Yeah, Pearl Jam 1992, I think they're still moshing.
You can be moving and enjoying the show without standing still and not be moshing. Also, people don't like to mosh to Eggman. Sorry.

I wasn't talking about "hardcore moshing" as someone put it, also known as slam dancing. I'm just talking about how it used to be at the BeastieBoys concerts in the late '90s. The whole crowd jumping as a unit, to the beat, like we're all on the same energy current, close together, one. It's the most amazing thing.
At the Austin concert, I was up front in Gen Adm, and it's crowded. I would barely touch someone while jumping and dancing, and they'd look at me like "Why you touchin' me?!?" I never thought when I reached my 30s and became a mom that I'd be saying, "These kids today don't know how to mosh anymore!!!"

OMG you guys SUCK! If you want moshing, if you want dancing, if you want to have a good time, come to Montreal my friend, and i'll show you where to go.
All you anti-moshing wussies are just prudish boring homophobes.
If you don't like moshing, it's fine, but don't go bashing people who like to do it.

The one and ONLY Beastie Boys song I heard through out this tour that put one ounce of thought in my head that made me want to mosh (run around in circles causing no one any physical harm) would be Sabotage. Everything else just made me dance.

I have seen them twice in Detroit, the first in 95 at COBO the entire floor was a mosh pit, very rowdy.....The next was the hello nasty tour at the Palace and we had to sign a waiver saying that we would not mosh or crowd surf..half way through the show the Beasties had to calm the crowd down because the Detroit fans are too wild...Mike D said "Yall motherfuckers are gettin too hype"!!
