Lord Heseltine dismissed as "semantics" Mr Blair's claims that he had honestly believed intelligence, that has since turned out to be faulty.

Lord Hurd also claimed Mr Blair had "deceived himself" over the case for going to war with Iraq.

"I don't think he deliberately lied, because I think he's one of those people who deceived himself first," he said.

"He persuaded himself that it was not necessary to ask all the awkward questions about the power, it was simply necessary to take up and echo and repeat the arguments that President Bush was making. (...) Lord Hurd said Mr Blair's error of judgment had been so grave that he could not be trusted again in a similar situation.

Meanwhile, Mr Clarke rejected the prime minister's argument for redeploying the Black Watch soldiers to central Iraq to help American forces. (...)
