View Full Version : What's the time, Mr Wolf?

About 6 minutes too soon, according to the forum's internal clock.

Check any online atomic clock, the forums seem to be about 6 minutes ahead of the rest of the world.

Any chance of a fix?

i, being the smart one that i am, set this whole thing to the wrong time zone when i first registered. so all my times are a few hours or so ahead of what they really are. any way for me to re-set the time zone thing? thanks.

That's the server clock that's wrong. We could change it but it's not really worth doing.

Damn, just seen the "maybe" get-out clause.
I'll just settle for a bling Rolex then.
Thanks. (y)

i think the server time doesnt take into effect the time switch. (!)

I called for back-up. This one is too big for us to handle alone.

Urm, to update, it seems to me that the forum clock is now 33 minutes fast. See how these little things spiral when you let them slide?

It's now something like 33 mintues slow. It was 36 minutes slow last time I checked, so TPK is making progress with the issue. Stay tuned for more updates.

is the clock in the server mechanical? I can see that causing problems...

At a guess the server clock is based on the time kept by the BIOS which is dependant on the efficiency of the lithium battery keeping it online, the reliability of the power supply, and how the server (Linux?) checks updates to the clock.

If it was a windows server, it would automatically keep the time synchronised with online atomic clocks. It would also be even buggier and even shitter.

The clock is actually purely mechanical. It requires winding once a week. That's TPK's job.

You need to harness a strike of lightning to get it going by itself.

You can use cron jobs or other systems to keep a linux/unix server clock running on time despite of what the bios has to say.

I had a linux workstation that had a clock that would just run off uncontrollably. I could have fixed it easily... if I had bothered.

A similar thing seems to be going on here ;)

This morning it was 40 minutes too fast. Now it's almost right on. I just posted in a thread after pauli. But because the clock is fixed, it appears before pauli's post. Mine is at 1:46 pm and hers 1:52 pm even though I posted after her.

Threw me the hell off.

Database was down earlier today, my guess is that they rebooted the server.

Either that or they fixed the time because they were online anyway to fix the database.

i wish we would have fixed the time or at least rebooted the server. unfortunately though other issues caused the database to shut down for a while.

Oh I meant that the fact that the time was suddenly correct was probably related to the server troubles :)

TPK wound the clock, that's why it's up to speed now. Hopefully he'll keep on top of things from now on.

The forum's clock is 20 minutes fast again by my reckoning. Any chance of it being reset again? Maybe setting the server to access an NTP time server automtically to keep it regularly in sync?
