I am not a member of any party; I am an independent.
I am also one of those "anyone but Bush" voters, and I'm afraid of 4 more years.
Please consider the following:
Many will agree that the following 4 statements are true:
1. Either George Bush or John Kerry will be elected tomorrow.
2. Kerry is the lesser of the two evils.
3. In some circumstances, a vote for a "third party" candidate could be considered equivalent to a vote for Bush
4. Swing state voters have supreme power, especially Floridians; if Bush loses Florida, he is toast.
I know there are some "third party" members who are so worried about a second Bush term that they are voting for Kerry. While I empathize with them, I believe that we badly need alternatives to the two dominant parties. We all know that this sort of compromise is harmful to an alternative party; the matching federal funds issue is a no-brainer. But just as importantly, your vote is a vote of conscience; it keeps the dream alive. However, if you believe you can live with Kerry for the next four years in return for Bush's ouster, there is a way that you can contribute without giving up your vote.
By pairing your vote with a Kerry supporter from a "safe state,", i.e., a state that Bush is expected to win by a landslide, alternative party members can help take out Bush without sacrificing their support for their party.
This is accomplished by registering at www.votepair.org. VotePair will hook you up with a Kerry supporter in a Bush safe state. The two of you will then
communicate via e-mail, and reach agreement on the partnership.
For example, a Kerry supporter in Utah will vote for Ralph Nader, and his/her
partner, a Nader supporter in Florida, will vote for Kerry. In this way, an alternative party member can contribute to a Bush defeat, without sacrificing his/her valuable vote of conscience (and funding!). Mr. Nader has actually directed supporters to VotePair (see C-SPAN coverage for Oct 9).
I live in one of those states in which Bush will crush Kerry. This the route I'm taking this year. Imagine... Wolfowitz, Rumsfeld, Ashcroft, Cheney, Rove, Bush... gone in 11 weeks. There are currently over 20,000 voters registered at VotePair.com, but they have been able to create less than 2,500 pairs so far. They need more participants from alternative parties in swing states.
Please consider this tactic; it is quite legal.
