Judges shut conservative news site

'False news' claim

By Nick Farrell: Tuesday 02 November 2004, 08:06
PERSIAN JUDGES have ordered the conservative run news website Baztab to close after receiving complaints that the site was "publishing false news".

According to the Iranian student news agency ISNA, Baztab was ordered to shut by the judiciary prosecution's inspector after the complaints that the site's "false news" contradicted the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) "guidelines" and were contrary to the country's internal and external interests.

According to the AFP news agency, Baztab claimed that the SNSC had ordered the site to be filtered, because of it publishing material regarding Iran's nuclear weapon programme.

However, a spokeswoman said that the site only published material found in the rest of the Iranian media.

Iranian authorities have clamped down on 'illegal websites' and usually the targets are reformist journalists. Baztab is run by the former head of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards, Mohsen Rezaie, who is not known for his reformist views.

This might be the reason the site is still running and none of the journalists have been held in detention, or worse. µ
