Yeah like greenjacketgirl said Bush can't be president again! What's the restriction for a former President to run again?

Doesn't it stink that Clinton can't run again. Why shouldn't Clinton run again? Why do people leave it to Hilary when it should be Bill? Who's next? Don't leave the future office to someone capable of changing parties (i.e., another Republican changing party the way Bloomberg did for NYC mayor!) Come on...!

Word, its pretty shite. I guess the rest of the world just isn't ready for change. I'm pissed that Australia has the same PM for another 3 years...and America (most probably) has the same president for another 4...but that's democracy for ya.

I wonder if things will change once some of the old conservatives start to drop off the mortal coil?

In situations such as these the only thing that you can do is live and be strong within your own personal integrity. Just because someone is fucking up your country, doesn't mean you need to become hopeless. We need smart people out there who have developed their own set of beliefs, and who actively try to work to help the environment, poverty, prejudice, corruption and disease.

Peace to you to my Finnish brother. If Americans want Bush, they can have him, it'll only create more terrorists towards America, a weaker economy and a greater divide between rich and poor. Just don't have a cry to the rest of the world when China and Russia jump ahead of you as the world powers.

we (progressive thinking liberals/independants) are the MINORITY. period.

bush won because there are more of them than there are of us.
it's as simple as that.

BALANCE OF POWER *

SENATE (51)*
GOP: 53
DEM: 44

HOUSE (218)*
GOP: 228
DEM: 199

GOVERNOR
GOP: 28
DEM: 21

we are the second rung.

it's still the most powerful country in the world.....and will be for some time to come at least.

i'd rather somehow win my country back....

the real issue here (and this election should really drive it home) is the education system in our country.
it's poor, and there are too many uneducated and "limited education" peeps in our country (no college or higher education)...and those people make up the republican base.

the enlightened become progressive and liberal.

the mentally stunted remain conservative (there's a god in heaven who knows all, a few cells have a soul, gays should die, fuck the poor, kill muslims and any one who isn't christian..ect)

the better our education....the more democrats.

Yeah, but they refuse to learn. They have been given ample chance on this very forum, and yet obstinantly refuse to accept facts, or even understand why their arguments are irrational. They willfully ignore the truth which should be self-evident. This mentality is not something you can fix. They are like stubborn children, who will only EVER learn the hard way.

the better our education....the more democrats.
that's our only hope.

Too late, never happen, to much "go us, go US, woohoo" flag waving self-congratulatory nonsense. Yanks don't even KNOW how stupid the majority of them are, even when provided with repeated evidence. Think they're gonna let someone "meddle" and fix it for them? BS. They have a vested interest in ego-masturbation, not gonna happen.

Trying to fix the US is like trying to duck-tape up a banger. Yeah it might stay on the road a bit longer, but it'll just get smokier, and less reliable, and more dangerous until the inevitable happens.

I'm having some trouble coping with this myself. Over the last four years I wrote 1000's of words on a message board to fellow alumnae of a women's college I attended (many of them people I knew in school) trying to show them what a disaster Bush has been for our country. Because that was the only place I personally knew Bush voters. I gave them facts, facts, facts, logic, more facts, more logic and still more facts. Still, today some of them simply say "George Bush is a great leader" with nothing more to back it up, and then they go and vote Bush.

Oh, and a lot of them are homophobic bigots as well, despite the many postings of gay alum trying to explain to them what it's like to be a second-class citizen.

Like someone wrote on their blog today, "I feel like I'm stuck in a room with the slow kids."

Yes, it's big mystery (in Europe anyway). How can Bush get so many votes?! I don't get it.

And how much damage he can make in 4 more years?

He'll probably be appointing at least two Supreme Court justices - Rehnquist has cancer and anyway he's 80 years old, and John Paul Stevens is 84 and I doubt he'll be able to hold out another 4 years. Speculation is that Bush will nominate Thomas to Chief Justice; and he's indicated that he would model his nominees after Scalia and Thomas. (These two are pretty extreme right, they were the only dissenters when the court said that states can withhold tax-payer funded scholarships from students studying theology, and when the court upheld the Miranda ruling.)

Expect social security to be privatized - which means there won't be enough money being paid in to the existing system to cover benefits for the baby boomers. It's not like a 401(k) where the money they've paid over the years has been sitting accruing interest - current wage earners withholdings are the source for current retirees benefits.

Expect a big push to drill for oil in ANWR, as well as a lot of other public lands across the West. And increased logging.

He's pledged to cut the deficit in half, and since we know he won't raise taxes, that means some pretty stiff budget cuts have to happen somewhere. Indications have been that the cuts will happen in the VA, CDC, community police funding, prisons, education, medical and scientific research, and possibly even homeland security. And keep in mind, limiting budgets to current levels is in effect a cut, because of inflation.

He's also indicated an interest in abandoning federal income tax in favor of a national sales tax. Sales tax always hits people with lower income levels more, because they tend to use a much higher percentage of their income on purchases, whereas the upper income brackets do more saving and investing.

Not necessarily, did you read the link Ace42 posted? This paragraph was particularly striking:

Bush supporters are also mistaken about the president's own positions (a pattern of misapprehension that an earlier PIPA report also documented). "Majorities incorrectly assumed that Bush supports multilateral approaches to various international issues -- the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (69%), the treaty banning land mines (72%); 51% incorrectly assumed he favors US participation in the Kyoto treaty -- the principal international accord on global warming... Only 13% of supporters are aware that he opposes labor and environmental standards in trade agreements -- 74% incorrectly believe that he favors including labor and environmental standards in agreements on trade. In all these cases, there is a recurring theme: majorities of Bush supporters favor these positions, and they infer that Bush favors them as well."

So people for some reason thinks he favors the same positions they do, when in fact he doesn't. Even after the debate when he criticized the ICC, 53% still believed he favored it. Willful ignorance, or cognitive dissonance...

America is the ONLY Nation in HISTORY to not TAKE/KEEP the land they conquer. (Japan, Germany, France, etc....)

You mean the country will continue to grow and we'll defeat terrorism

#1. I'd rather nobody starved, be they arab, american, african...everybody deserves a right to life.
#2. America may be the only nation to not take land from nations they've conquered (thats not true mind you: Philippines), but because they are economic imperialists they in effect control every country. Who needs land when you have this???? Not to mention the colonisation of thought that America has attempted since Vietnam...world democracy is not the right way if what you have in America is democracy. Anyway, all those nations you mentioned gave up their possessions (including France, who gave up Vietnam just before you went back in there and claimed it) post world war II.
#3. Sorry to break it to you, but Terrorism is in every country around the world, they dont have to be backed by a country or even a group like jamar islamir, all they need is some C4 and the will to die for a cause. Its stupidity to think you can defeat terrorism, its a part of human nature. And you country's economy is seriously stuffed. You can't even equip your army properly.

Fu*k it. Bush won again. Four more years of stupidity to come. Probably war in Iran within 14 months, and likely North Korea. The military will be stretched to its limits. A real, new draft will start. More terror attacks overseas. Hopefully none here. More job outsourcing. Economy will tumble further. Federal bankruptcy? I hope that religious conservatives get their comeuppance. Sweating over stupid things while real chaos reigns. Too many of these clowns—the black ones and the white ones—are too Armageddon-minded and looking for The Rapture to think rationally about these events. I hope they’re happy when more jobs leave and people get even more desperate. Desperate as in crime. Social Security’s getting hacked up. Federal Head Start funding’s getting the axe. Even less affirmative action than before. White entitlement and jackass ‘colorblind’ ethos will abound.

I could never be president. My views are too out of the mainstream to be even remotely accepted by most people. For one thing, I really don’t give a damn about gay marriage—which torches my credibility with roughly 80% of people out there from jump street. For what it’s worth, why deny gay people the opportunity to have their money wasted by wedding planners, photographers, caterers and dining halls, most of whom can be counted on to charge exorbitant fees for minor returns? Why cut out such a potentially lucrative source of income and maybe give the economy a minor boost?

I don't care who I "get saved by" because I am not a biggot.

However, that said, if (as I think you are trying to imply) you mean how would I feel about some pro-Bush white yank getting toasted because some under-educated black guy from a shit neighbourhood couldn't do the job right?

I'd say that it was natural justice. White man keeps black man down, black man is too far down to save white man's ignorant ass when he gets into trouble.

kay i came on here to apologize for going off like that, but i just have to say that i said 95% of people on welfare don't wast their money on stuff like that. and what exactly is it that i'm wrong about. have you done a poll in the projects to see what people are spending their money on? and you don't have to believe me, i'm just telling what i have seen and where i have been.

That's The Eliteist(sp) Attitude that lost Kerry the Election. (n)

Kerry lost the election because the evangelical Christian vote that stayed home for the 2000 election came out in force this time because they want their religious laws written into the Constitution. This bloc of voters tipped the close election in Bush's favor and now they want payback in the form of Supreme Court Justice appointments, but that's a heartache for another day...

I wanted to post because if anyone was interested in my sad little story earlier in this thread about my women's college alumnae community, it takes a happy turn as someone posted yesterday that thanks to the discussions she started "following things more closely" and registered to vote after skipping the last four presidential elections! She thanked me in particular for links & info, her town just got Air America Radio and she listens to that, etc. She voted for Kerry and other Democrats. So that really made my day. :)

(I know what some of you lefties will say about voting for the Democrats but I and so many others know that was the best thing we could do right now to stop the madness that the Bush administration brings. This new voter could eventually help third parties, she's politically engaged now and could go on to decide that she wants to support the Greens or whatever.)

Ace, you are saying you are better than me. plain and simple. thats what the media projects, thats what the Dem(liberal) party projects. JFK, FDR, Carter, Clinton werent like this. the party wasnt like this. i love lieberman, he is a straight talking guy, Dean although i dont agree with him is also a very straight guy. those 2 even though they would have stood smaller chance to win would have been in the right direction.

but kerry comes in and in the primary was anti-war, he wins nomination, then changes his whole story. then he changes his views on most everything else. wall in isreal bad, then a month later its good. suv's are bad to evironmentalists, but in detroit they are great. it goes on and on and on. the liberals would have us think that no issue is simple, everything in the world is complex. it really isnt. religion doesnt mean people are bible freaks. its a anchor, it is what helps people cope with things they ordinarily couldnt. i was in AA, the higher power thing is exactly the same thing. religion just says do the right thng, do it to the best of your ability and have faith that it will work out in the right way. and it works! im not religous but i know the things that i cant change and the things i can, i work hard to change the things i can and my life has done a 180 from 12 years ago. i was sittn there with my friends having a good time with a low paying job. finally i said fuck it, nothing got better, nothing changed, i was in the same spot after 6 years. i said cya, nvr talked to any of them again. went to college took 7 years for a 4 year BS. had to work 32-full time the whole time. funny thing is i didnt even get a job i n that field, im now the director of maintenance for a landscape company and i do pretty good. I had landscaped since i was 16. got married got a house 2 new cars. it just worked out and not becuase im religous but becuase the belief system works. no matter what you believe in it works.

liberals cant understand this thinking. you Ace think its dumb and backwards and that it gives you the right to look down on everyone like us. well think of i t this way, in 25 years when im part of the top 2% of wage earners i can count on you to still be in the position you are in today becuase you dont believe that hope and faith(in anything) will get you anywhere except into a trailer park.

Ace, you are saying you are better than me.

If the cap fits. I'm smarter than you. That is a preferable synonym to "better" than "richer"

I had landscaped since i was 16. got married got a house 2 new cars. it just worked out and not becuase im religous but becuase the belief system works. no matter what you believe in it works.

It worked *for you* - if NO-ONE ELSE IN AMERICA had that happen to them, JUST YOU. Would you say "see, it works!" Now what if it was just you and one other guy it worked for. What about just 50 of you? A hundred? A thousand? What if it only works for people in your county, or state? What if it only works for men? What if it only works for white people?

liberals cant understand this thinking.

"It worked for ME, so everything is fine!"

Well as long as Mr Pleasant's alright. Yes, I understand that thinking, but I dismiss it as selfish and ignorant.

well think of i t this way, in 25 years when im part of the top 2% of wage earners i can count on you to still be in the position you are in today becuase you dont believe that hope and faith(in anything) will get you anywhere except into a trailer park.

When in 25 years you are penniless because your business got dwarfed by a big national company. Or because the economy has been driven into the ground, and no-one can afford landscaping, then tell me that.

Top 2% - how much do you think you have to earn to make that?

And "count on me to be in the position I am today" - how do you know that I won't inherit a fortune from my rich capitalist daddy in the next 25 years, and be so stinking rich I could play with your business like it was a chew toy? That is the system you have so much faith in. You work hard your whole day, and think you've made it, then some lucky eco-artisocrat sniggers at your naivety and bitch slaps you back down to earth.

Some people work hard and get nowhere and go bust. Some people sit on their fat asses and get given your, and hundred people like you's share with a cherry on top for doing squat.

"Hey, the system works. I spent my life building up a business, had a nice house and car. But then a national chain moved in, put us under, the bank forclosed, everything got repossed, and my wife left me for someone that could provide for the kids"

Don't think it happens? It happens every day. Your argument for the system is "hey, i've been lucky!" - well whoop de fucking doo. *I've* been lucky, but I still see the system for the crock it is.

TAYLOR: Death is result of debate about God

BY JOEL THURTELL

October 28, 2004

A Taylor police dispatcher took the call at precisely 12:44 p.m. on Oct. 18.

A 49-year-old man said he'd just blasted a man with a revolver and a shotgun because the man said he didn't believe in God.

The dispatcher said the alleged shooter told him he'd just shot "the devil himself" and was still armed and standing over the body of the 62-year-old victim "in case he moved."

"I want to make sure he's gone," the alleged shooter told the dispatcher.

The dispatcher asked the suspect how many times he shot the victim.

"Hopefully enough," was the suspect's chilling reply, according to the dispatcher.

When police arrived in the 15600 block of McGuire, they could see the victim seated on a living room couch with major trauma to his head, officers said.

They said they were certain he was dead. He was.

Lying on a hallway floor was a black 12-gauge shotgun. Two spent shotgun shells lay on the floor nearby.

Later, police found a revolver with five spent cartridge casings.

On the way to the police station, the suspect told police "he did not want to deal with anyone that did not believe in God," according to the report.

The report also indicated that the suspect and the victim knew each other, although their relationship was unclear.

The suspect said he was an Eagle Scout, the report said.

The suspect said the victim had told him there was nothing he could say that would convince the 62-year-old to believe in God.

Following this discussion, the suspect said, he went into another room and removed his shirt. Then he shaved his face.

He tried once more to convince the victim to believe in God, but this time, he had the shotgun.

"How long would it take you to believe in God?" the suspect said he asked the victim.

"Not until I hear Gabriel blow his horn," the victim allegedly replied, while tipping his hat.

That's when the suspect shot him.

"I did it because he is evil; he was not a believer," the suspect told police.

The suspect said the victim "has been locked up most of his life."

Michigan Department of Corrections records indicate the victim was on probation for a drug conviction.

At the police station, the suspect commented that he believed there is a God.

Then, looking at the floor, he seemed to have second thoughts: "Maybe there's not," he said.

cause i'm liberal and i understand it. i believed i was fortunate enough to go through those circumstances while clinton was president and that assistance was there for me. i believed that when i got to were i wanted to be i could help others do the same. i believed that my neighbors in the projects did not feel entilted but angry and frustrated. i believe that i can make a difference and that it doesn't have to include someone "earning" that difference.

When you make statements that berate people and place them below you, You Are An Elitist. ;)

e·lit·ism or é·lit·ism Audio pronunciation of "elitist" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (-ltzm, -l-)
n.

1. The belief that certain persons or members of certain classes or groups deserve favored treatment by virtue of their perceived superiority, as in intellect, social status, or financial resources.
2.
1. The sense of entitlement enjoyed by such a group or class.
2. Control, rule, or domination by such a group or class.

When you make statements that berate people and place them below you, you are not putting yourself in an elite. Elite, by its very nature, is an exceptional group. By berating people, I am classing them as "Sub-normal", not "average in comparisson to the elite I perceive myself as part of" Futhermore, even if you (incorrectly) took this to mean that I was putting myself into an elite, it would still not mean that I believed these people deserved special additional rights.

However, as I said, only in America does being able to accept and process objective fact make you part of an "Intellectual elite" - in the rest of the world, that merely makes you part of the non-congenitally disadvantaged majority.

t's probably because their literacy would make them more qualified than a significant percentage of US citizens.

Are you suggesting being literate makes you part of an elite? Back to my point: Maybe in America. In the rest of the first-world, literacy is not an abnormally high level of social stratification.

My nan is "smarter" that IceGargoyle, and she isn't exactly an astro-physicist. It has nothing to do with "elitism".

[quote]Yeah, but you'll only be able to afford the internet fees required to spam this place for two of those.

How is Bush ruining the economy to the point where many average (read: common) people (Americans) can't afford to get online *me* being elitist?

i have so much to say about this load of crap you just dumped on this board i can hardly stand it! what the fuck do you know about people who are on welfare, when was the last time you even walked by the projects? i got knocked up and my son's dad left when i was pregnant, so i ended up on welfare for 1 year, while i went to school and worked part time. then i got a good paying job and now make pretty darn good money. i worked my ass off to get were i am today. i have a fucking car that nobody paid for but me. and if you have ever even been near the projects, because yes, i lived there for two and a half years you would know that 95% of those people don't go by fat sweet rims for their cars. or ten pairs of nikes. they are struggling to keep their kids fed everyday. and you know what i feel pretty good that i know make enought to be able to help someone else out of the shithole their in. and the facts are, jackass, that only about 1% of your taxes, of your fat paycheck that you say you make, goes to any kind of social services. so why don't you get your head out of your ass and actually find out what your money is going to if your so pissed off about! because when i was on welfare i $135 a month, yeah that's it! do you think i bought nikes or rims with that or do you think i bought diapers and a bus pass to get to work and school? i'm just too pissed to go on right now! ReeeeeeespeK!

hehe Ace, you state my case for me. better, smarter whatever you prefer because you believe you ARE smarter than me. but your posts lead me to conclude otherwise my friend. Word. Ace is a bit too arrogant to be taken seriously. Too much time on his hands, methinks.

And enuff with the goddam dictionary definitions! Defining stuff just makes you look pompous and condescending.

I people didn't keep trying to use words in a strictly private sense, I would not need to.
