Hello Brooklyn!
Hey, what's up people? My name is Jason & it's my first post. Thought I'd share with all the folks who weren't lucky enough to make it to last nights show what a great time everybody had.
This was my first show seeing the boys in 14 years so it's been quite a change for them & me. Mix Master Mike wasn't as tight as I thought he'd be but the overall live sound sure has come a long way, the guys made up for it and the crowd was having a great time getting down, despite the venue being only 1/2 - 2/3 sold.
The Mix Master opened the set walking out on stage straight from a backstage holding area where he came out tossing down a plastic cup of Bud Light on the big screens for all the audience to see. The live-camera crew filmed him grabbing some vinyl and making his way straight though the concession area, all the way down the stairs leading through the crowd, past security and right down onto the stage. It was smoking & had the audience really fired up for the start of a fun night.
I was getting down all night regardless of how many plastic cups of overpriced beer came showering down on my head from above. I hate having my dance space intruded on by drunken underage kids though who have no manners & try to walk off with my girlfriends jacket with cell phone & car keys in the pocket.
This ain't no disco... this ain't your pageant.
At one point the band had to stop playing and warn audience members "This ain't no Frat Party. Leave the testosterone at home. Go back to the Frat House".
The night was filled with awkward pauses between many songs where the audience stayed static, prompted only by glowing video screen to watch as the same ridiculous internet files commonly passed around online (i.e. - "kung-fu guy" doing a back flip & landing on the ground; 2 cats fitting; brutal snowboard bails on land) were projected to fill voids & gaps between songs. The segment featuring a montage with SNL star Will Farrell pretending to be President Bush came across as stale humor and slowed the vibe down a little more as it was met by some cheers and some boo's. At one point during the end of the set, one of the boys caught a shirt flung on stage from a fan in the front row that read "Fuck Bush". It quickly became a 'flag' to be draped over one of the stage's video monitors for all the bear witness. I thought it was clever but somehow it acted as an almost dated protest. The only other blow to the current adminstration came during encore when it was stated "Wasn't it nice not to have to stare into George Bush's face on TV for a few hours tonight?" My answer to that = Yes! Yes, it was.
Pageantry Love is in the air.
I thought a nice touch during one of the segments broadcast on the on-stage video screens was as the camera was playing a reel of audience vignettes, one of the young audience members grabbed the cameraman as he lead his way to his unsuspecting girlfriend who was holding down their spot pre-show at the rail separating the audience from the front stage. The man got his nerve up & quickly rattled off how much he loved his girlfriend in a manner that was obvious he was nervous, about to propose, little did he known, in front of the entire audience of that nights show. The spontaneous emotion could be felt through the whole house and it set the mood of Pageantry Love in the air.
One of the oddest moments from the night came when Mike D stopped the set and fumbled for something in his hat... a SANDWHICH apparently! After grabbing a big bite and explaining with a mouth half full that he got hungry so he packed a "butter sandwich" before the show. Hmmmm. What's that butter got in it & can I have some too, Mike?

* - Three song mini-set from the moving stage wheeled around from behind a curtain featuring Sabrosa > Something's Got to Give with the boys wearing powder-blue tuxedos and jammin' out.
** - Intergalactic was played from a mini-stage at the back of the house by the sound & light boards. (personal note: I got some great pics on my cell phone as this is where I was chillin' the whole night anyway, hugging that back rail as they popped out on it. ... Yauch gave me a few high-5's as he jumped around back there. The whole place was getting down. Energy level: 9/10)
