Hey all you remixers out there. I'm just curious as to if any of you remix using turntables instead of doing it digitally?
I just bought a Sansui SR-929 turntable for 17 bucks at an auction (believe it or not it retails for about 580.00). It's certainly heavy and I need to buy a new stylus for it, but boy is it a beauty.
It's direct drive so I can certainly scratch like a mofo, but I know I need to get a mixer and another turntable before I can truly start to mix it up.
So therefore I'm curious, how many of you remixes have real gear? Anyone?

No, I'm digital... although I have an analogue synth. I like to think of my gear as real though.

Interesting... does it have pitch control?

It has everything. Pitch control, and a button to switch between 33 and 45 speed.
It also has a Quartz display so I can see the gears spinning underneath a little glass window. So purdy.

Cool, send up some results once finish creating a track; you don't need to wait to get your 2nd turntable before you can do that...

Yeah, but at first I need to purchase a new stylus and then find a way to record my results.
I've made remixes using computer though. There's my first ever Beastie Boys remix (Not sure if it'll work but: http://www.broken-silence.net/beastieremix/ and no, the download link on it doesn't work.), and then I did something with a DJ Premier beat for Ch-Check It Out.
The latter I have a clip of and I'd love to let you guys hear a sample of it but I have nowhere to host the clip.

-- As for a way to record your results, you'll have you can try using the aux out ports of whatever amp you're using with the turntbale. Get a cable that has a RCA plugs on one end and a mini-jack on the other. Stick the mini-jack side into whatever sound-card (Line-in) on your pc and use some software program to record it.
-- As for Hosting, try yousendit.com . Just send the file to your own e-mail address; it will give you a link which you can then use to give to other people to DL your stuff.. not sure how long the files remain active on it...
Hope this helps...

Wow thanks! I'll do that with the turntable.
And I forgot completely about yousendit, that site is great. Thanks :)!

Just because the deck is direct drive doesn't mean the deck will have a great deal of torque - some direct drive decks have less torque than belt-driven ones.

Me.
Please mentally add on Reason2.5 and a Roland Juno into the list.
FYI: Stay away from Behringer equipment, especially their DJ mixers. I gotta return mine for the 2nd time for the same problem. Boooo.

edit: and subtract the EMU sampler. that bish went up on ebay to pay for Reason.

This turntable is supposed to be the cadillac of the turntable world though. So hopefully when I get a stylus it'll own my soul (lol).

i have the beastie acceppella LP and often I make a little scratch sketch on my RC-20 then layer the acceppella over it. One of these days i'll post this.

I have a Roland mixer and two Pioneer CDJ 1000's, but I mostly use those for spinning live. For remixing it's all Acid 4.0. I am not a big vinyl fan, though I do have a truntable and tons of wax, I mostly just use them for scratching effects at home and pulling pellas and sound effects from vinyl for use on the old computer. I have found that when spinning live (especially on wood floors with jumping dancers) my turntable skips like a little bitch. I actually think of the turntable as my least real piece of equipment!
Good luck- you are going to need at least one more of those turntables! :D

no doubt you could do a remix just using turntables, but its totally different to using software.
and dont use yousendit.com unless you want your file taken down really quickly. better off with soundclick.
