View Full Version : Votes didn't count

I just wanted to say that I worked the election polls in California and I am of the strong belief that our votes didn't count. When the polls close at 8 it takes us another hour and a half to clean up, count the votes(we do not tally the votes, we only hand count them), count the signatures in the roster- then the inspector must drive to another location to drop off the election materials, not to mention that they're supposed to verify the provisional ballots which takes 40 days-out of 600 voters at my precinct alone approximately 70 were provisional votes...so how the fuck is the election called so fast? To verify all the signatures in the roster (which we did have one discrepancy where a lady came into vote and her name was already signed in the roster) would take at least a month. I thought that it was strange when i found four ballots that had nothing-absolutely nothing marked on them. Maybe these people were making a statement. Maybe they realized the votes really don't count. Maybe Bushes friends at the television networks were the ones calling the race. *okay we'll just paint Ohio red*
I wondered the same thing with the California recall vote- we turned in the final ballots and roster at about 9:45 pm and by 11:00 or so they're calling the race and Gray Davis is conceding? Please...
or maybe I'm feeling mad because i just read this (http://www.tompaine.com/articles/kerry_won.php)
also-anyone watch Bill Maher last night? He was complaining about the ridiculousness of the electoral college and he exchanged some harsh words with Alan Simpson and that idiot- I think andrew sullivan is his name. all right well i just had to vent

Missed it because I don't have HBO. But I'm trying to see if I am atleast able to read the trasncript.
And about the counting of the votes... I don't know enough about the whole counting process to assume anything.

yeah, um, andrew sullivan said that Noam Chomsky is an immoral liar because he pointed out what has already been established- that the US government is the one who had/has put Sadaam Hussein and other brutal tyrants in their positions of power. sullivan kept saying over and over again that Chomsky and Michael Moore are saying that America is evil...Moore and Chomsky never said America is Evil!- They said that the government is corrupt-not that the people of America are evil...I really can't stand these right wing pundits...and he's gay (Sullivan) none-the-less. DL Hughley told Sullivan to go to a conservative church in deep Mississippi to see what the Christian right thinks of gays-haha
The look on Bill Maher's face when Sullivan and Simpson scolded him about "demeaning" the Christian right by making fun of them reminded me of that line in a Police song-- "when the eloquence escapes you, their logic ties you up and rapes you..."

ha-cute...;)
I agree with Bill Maher's assertion that Kerry didn't ignite the left- Democrats try too hard to pander to Republicans instead of firing up the left. I thought that only 30% of the country was Republican(i forgot where I read/heard that statistic) but then they're running practically everything? We didn't want to hear that Kerry had "a plan"- we wanted to hear that we were gonna get the fuck out of Iraq.
On the other hand, maybe Kerry did win. The article that Resco provided (y) talks about provisional votes. These votes need to be verified and then they count- and according to the LA County Registar it takes 40 days to verify these votes. So how can they call the election so fast? I think it's a sham. We even give a little receipt to provisional voters so that they can call a number and check if their vote counted. All of the provisional voters should be told that their vote didn't count because the election was called before their vote could even be counted. But this then also leads me to ask- why the hell did Kerry concede so quickly?

'so that the election is decided by voters instead of the courts?' what trash. what doublespeak. the courts are the only place where citizens can get relief and demand their votes ARE counted. the florida supreme court was a voter's best friend in 2000.
to begin the healing? as if uniting behind george bush will heal anything.
maybe he conceded because he was never running to win? or to avoid a lengthy examination of the corrupt election process?
face it, john kerry is an american hero. he re-legitimized america's 'democracy' by getting all the opposition behind him and then giving up, laying down to bush rather than fighting. reporting for duty my ass.

That may be the truest statement I have ever read on this board.
If you think about it, if this is true, it would explain why Bush won. I don't think anyone thought he could possibly win. But I recall a few of us saying that the Rove team would not be defeated. They would cheat it, steal it, do whatever they had to do to keep their agenda rolling along. This would be the ultimate heist wouldn't it. It would also be amusing that even in a thrown election they would still have to alter votes.
