An unprecedented level of security will frame President Bush's second inauguration, with officials planning to use thousands of police from across the country, new screening technology for inaugural guests and a military contingent that could include a combat brigade of up to 4,000 troops.

Why? Didn't we all vote for the guy?

You know, it's probably no big deal, I think Bush and Co. just dig the shit out of projecting importance and instilling fear. Red State folk lap it up.

"and a military contingent that could include a combat brigade of up to 4,000 troops."

Marines I assume, since using Army troops would be a violation of the Posse Comitatus Act...unless they're planning on declaring an 'emergency' during the inauguration.

Bush knows he gives plenty of good reason for folks to want to kill him.
He should be proud to be the most hated man in US history even though half voted for him.

I have the resources to kill a goat. But I don't because it makes no sense.

Symbolism, people. The image and implications of the display of strength are vastly more important than any purported threat against which they are allegedly deployed. It's about associating the reaffirmation of the chief with military dominance, not protecting him from any actual harm. If I were Bush I'd have attack helicopters circling around and a squad of fighters would roar overhead as the ceremony was completed. If he could get away with it I'm sure he would have Saddam Hussein ritually strangled or beaten to death, but those days are fortunately past.

And a P.A screaming out Nazi propaganda. I can hear it now.
