That's why I say fuck Texas. I can never say "fuck the south" because as awful as it is, and despite the fact that I really do hate it sometimes, it's my home.
And I don't know the exact number that voted for Kerry. It was 30%+ I think.

Uuuummmm, there's a couple things wrong with that article. First, the civil war wasn't about slavery. the emancipation proclamation was delivered after the war began. It was about fair taxation, etc. Second, southern america was colonized first. remember Roanoke/Okacroke?(1584) Plymouth Rock was 1620. Columbus landed even farther south. And don't tell me Roanoke failed and Plymouth rock didn't b/c the North is better. Also, the Founding Fathers were not all northerners, for example Thomas Jefferson, you know, author of that Declaration thing? Look up where he was from, and returned every chance he got. So now you're gonna say, "well there were more Northerner Founding Fathers" That's because the North was the center of population. the South had agriculture. And this stuff about the northern states becoming states first, is bull shit. In those days, it took weeks to travel from the Constitutional Convention to the Southern states and days for gov't officials to converge on state capitals to vote on ratification. Then he gets to the gay marriage thing. Guess what, no one down here gives a fuck about gay marriage except the upper class, which is, in modern times mostly made up of the descendants of fucking carpetbaggers. Guess where fucking carpetbaggers came from? The Fucking North! where your special fucking Union decided that white men (i.e. former southern voters) had lost their right to self government. So guess who came down to run our lives for us. Slimy motherfuckin norterners, who made quick work of "Reconstruction" by redistributing land and the few remaining resources to profit themselves. And even these self-righteous bastards wouldn't cut the former slaves the break their were promised. MLK said "We're still waiting for our forty acres and a mule" (not an exact quote) So, if you're tired of contributing your federal taxes to less populous states (that feed you you're fucking vegetables, via federally funded highway systems, BTW), Why don't you just move down here and take some more of our fucking jobs? Northern Virginia has grown so much (with people from the North and Latin America) that you can be "packed like sardines in a tin", it should feel just like home to you.
See, now you've got me so pissed off, i've resorted to overgeneralization, I've stoop to y'all's level. So don't sit in front of your computer, bitch'n about
how hard life is, cause your state has more people than most others. Just a side note: more populous states pay more because revenue=no. of people, times a percentage of their income. Also, farmers don't make a lot of money. Now, if you excuse me, I've got to drive an hour on pitted-ass I66
to go home from school.

And if above post makes no sense, feel free to come visit, and I'll clarify.
seriously, I won't shoot you or anything. Southern hospitality isn't famous for nothing. I'll show you the run-down one-bedroom house where my friend's widowed grandmother raised her 6 kids and 2 orphaned cousins. Then I'll show you the two-thousand acre plantation that her family owned, pre-civil war. It was taken from them, and now its a hoighty-toighty little town, full of old money "horse-people" who have nothing better to do than go to wine tastings and go fox-hunting. But I digress.

I read the thread again, now i'm confused. Brendan, what do you mean "fuck Ohio" it's in the northern midwest, and it wasn't exactly a landslide for bush.
Also, before you bash me for being a conservative, pro-bush, pro-slavery redneck, you should know that I am not any of those things. Okay, so maybe I am a little redneck-ish, but I do know my geography/history/sociology/politics. And I have not, nor has my family, ever owned slaves. (we were too poor back then, and we still are.)

because ohio gave the election to bush...it wasn't just the south. it was also kind of a joke...sometimes we blue staters forget how sensitive you red staters are.
i like the south. but for example, south carliona just elected a senator who said "if a person wants to be publicly gay, they should not be teaching in the public schools." did you have to travel back in time to get this guy?? i don't think the people you guys vote for reflects who you are...it wasn't all that long ago when you were all blue states. there's a lot of bait and switch politics going on here.

The Civil War STILL has a huge impact on America even today. This whole "blue states vs. red states" mentality is a carryover of it. Whenever Southernors raise the stars and bars and go "the South shall rise again" that means the issues associated with the Civil War are still going on today.
Anytime there's resentment over "effete latte drinking New Yorkers," that's a by-product of the Civil War.
Look man, it's deeply ingrained in the American consciousness. Deal with it.

No, Maryland would be the North, no? They were on the side of the Union during the Civil War.
No, Maryland is part of the South (below the Mason-Dixon line: Its separation of Maryland and Delaware is a bit confusing since Delaware was a slave state that stayed in the Union)...it was a struggle to keep them in the Union, read up on the riots in Baltimore.
"The most important state for the moment - was Maryland. For it was through Maryland that any reinforcements to Washington had to pass.
The first soldiers to pass were a group of Pennsylvania militias who passed through Baltimore accompanied by hooting and hissing, but no more.. This was not the case when on April 19th the 6th Massachusetts Regiment arrived in Baltimore.
Trains did not pass directly through Baltimore, but rather cars had to be pulled by horses from the President Street Station to the B&O Camden Street Station. The first 9 cars crossed between the stations without much difficulty, but by then the crowds had grown, and the way was blocked. 220 men were stranded at President station.
They started out on foot, meeting an increasingly hostile crowd. The soldiers were stoned and soon shots were fired. All told before the soldiers could extricate themselves from the city, 4 soldiers were killed and 36 wounded.Twelve citizens of Baltimore died in the skirmishes. The first blood was spilled.
Immediately following the riots secessionists in Baltimore destroyed the railroads bridges and the telegraph lines thus cutting off Washington. For days Washington was cut off, with no additional replacement troops coming.
Panic reined in Washington- Lincoln looked out the White House windows wondering when reinforcements would show. Finally in April 25th the 8th Mass Infantry and the 7th New York Regiment, landed at Annapolis Maryland. The New York Regiment managed to repair a branch line of the B&O that had been sabotaged and soon they arrived in the capital, whose citizens breathed a collective sigh of relief."

as a resident of the midwest (illinois), i would like to remind people that a few of us went blue. there's a reason why bush never bothered to set foot in illinois during the campaign, because he knew that we'd kick him right back into air force one.
and i don't consider nebraska or any of the other plains states part of the midwest. those, including daschle-losing dakota and cheney's wyoming, are as much to blame as the south is.
i just wonder how in the hell the south gave birth to jimmy carter?

hmmm... not too sure about that, given all the kerry voters who turned up for anti war protests.
kerry's platform all along was that we never should have gotten to this point in the first place, that weapons inspectors in iraq clearly were working, and that there was no reason to go to such extremes to deal with saddam, when international pressure would have eventually worked. yes, there is a burden to deal with the mess that bush started, that we trashed all of iraq, and that we've gone beyond the point of no return. so yeah, we've got to finish the job.
but there was NEVER any justification to begin with. do you know how many new osamas we've created as a result of our actions? a war created by neocons who never went to war in the first place because daddy got them out of it.
but i agree with you, there's ignorant people everywhere, and 59,117,523 of them made themselves known this past nov. 2nd. the 55,557,584 who voted for kerry were voting to try to fix the mess that bush got us in, and to try to reclaim whatever international respect we have left.

Meh, fallacy. And yes ignorant people everywhere. Wasn't talking about the majority. But even that I would argue. The majority (of Kerry supporters) were not staunchly anti-war. You have to look at it from the majorities standpoint. They are as well informed as you are. From you got from things like the debates, was that he was not completly opposing the war, just how it was carried out. His voting records obviously show this. But if you have some speeches or something that clearly show Kerry as being anti-war, or even most americans, or even most Kerry supporters being anti-war. Then hell, Ill believe you comepletly. But then we come to the issue that, are these people really pro-kerry or just anti-bush, and just haven't heard of the 3rd parties?

I am an independent, and I voted for KERRY! The title of and link contained in this thread pissed me off b/c it was full of misinformation and stereotypes. My intention was to bring up truths that people who aren't really familiar with the subject aren't aware of. My thanks to Whois for doing the legwork for some specifics.
And QueenAdrock, I'm in Fauquier county, the last hold-out county this far north. We're still rural, (read, culturally southern) but the developers seem to have bought out some local council-men, and now there's a helluva lot more people here than there was when I was little. Hell, we have a damn stoplight in Marshall! (Pop. ~4,000 five years ago) And anyway, my family is from North Carolina anyway.
DroppinScience, that was the point of my PPS, we (everyone) needs to forget this shit. We need to forget the Civil War. We even need to forget the election, and get on with it. How many times have you written your representatives. I wrote letters to all of mine, asking for sensible reform of game laws to help the deer overpopulation in Va, before I was eighteen. So Bush is the President for 4 more, let's let him know what we want. It's not (hopefully) the end of the world. And yes, the Civil War, and the Revolutionary war and WWI and WWII and Vietnam and Korea, etc, are all deeply ingrained in our consciousness, but the past is gone. I'm sorry if I came off like a knob-head (good one, parkey) but it's all so ingrained in my consciousness, that I can't help but bow my head when I walk into school, b/c my community college is literally a few hundred yards from the Manassas Battlefield, where thousands of Americans died for what they believed in. Would any of you do the same, just so your GNP or national IQ would go up? I don't think so. So let us all drop this issue, because none of us are going to persuade anyone else. Opinions are like assholes, everyone's got one, and they all stink. -peace

Fuck the South. Fuck 'em. We should have let them go when they wanted to leave. But no, we had to kill half a million people so they'd stay part of our special Union. Fighting for the right to keep slaves - yeah, those are states we want to keep.
They weren't fighting for their right to keep slaves. They were quite literally fighting a foreign nation, the United States, who had invaded their country in a war of conquest.
And now what do we get? We're the fucking Arrogant Northeast Liberal Elite?
Yes, we are.
How about this for arrogant: the South is the Real America? The Authentic America. Really?
Not the Real, just a different.
Cause we fucking founded this country, assholes.
Not alone, by any stretch.
Those Founding Fathers you keep going on and on about? All that bullshit about what you think they meant by the Second Amendment giving you the right to keep your automatic weapons in the glove compartment because you didn't bother to read the first half of the fucking sentence? Who do you think those wig-wearing lacy-shirt sporting revolutionaries were? They were fucking blue-staters, dickhead. Boston? Philadelphia? New York? Hello? Think there might be a reason all the fucking monuments are up here in our backyard?
Thomas Jefferson - Author of the Declaration of Independance, Virginia
James Madison, Architect of the Constitution, Virginia
George Washington, General of the American Revolutionary Army, Father of our Country, first President of the USA, Virginia
No, No. Get the fuck out. We're not letting you visit the Liberty Bell and fucking Plymouth Rock anymore until you get over your real American selves and start respecting those other nine amendments. Who do you think those fucking stripes on the flag are for? Nine are for fucking blue states. And it would be 10 if those Vermonters had gotten their fucking Subarus together and broken off from New York a little earlier. Get it? We started this shit, so don't get all uppity about how real you are you Johnny-come-lately "Oooooh I've been a state for almost a hundred years" dickheads. Fuck off.
Bizarre. The southern colonies were every bit as involved in the Revolution and the War of 1812 as the northern ones. Southerners had as much to do with the genesis of the American philosophy and the establishment of the American nation as anyone in the north if not more.
Arrogant? You wanna talk about us Northeasterners being fucking arrogant? What's more American than arrogance? Hmmm? Maybe horsies? I don't think so. Arrogance is the fucking cornerstone of what it means to be American. And I wouldn't be so fucking arrogant if I wasn't paying for your fucking bridges, bitch.
You wouldn't be paying for those bridges if northern liberals hadn't eradicated the soveriegnty of the states and initiated the massive federal programs that you are referring to.
All those Federal taxes you love to hate? It all comes from us and goes to you, so shut up and enjoy your fucking Tennessee Valley Authority electricity and your fancy highways that we paid for. And the next time Florida gets hit by a hurricane you can come crying to us if you want to, but you're the ones who built on a fucking swamp. "Let the Spanish keep it, it’s a shithole," we said, but you had to have your fucking orange juice.
A historically inaccurate distortion.
The next dickwad who says, "It’s your money, not the government's money" is gonna get their ass kicked. Nine of the ten states that get the most federal fucking dollars and pay the least... can you guess? Go on, guess. That’s right, motherfucker, they're red states. And eight of the ten states that receive the least and pay the most? It’s too easy, asshole, they’re blue states. It’s not your money, assholes, it’s fucking our money. What was that Real American Value you were spouting a minute ago? Self reliance? Try this for self reliance: buy your own fucking stop signs, assholes.
Do you vote for candidates who would end these programs? Are you in favor of returning such responsiblities to the states as the Constitution dictates? I doubt it.
Let’s talk about those values for a fucking minute. You and your Southern values can bite my ass because the blue states got the values over you fucking Real Americans every day of the goddamn week. Which state do you think has the lowest divorce rate you marriage-hyping dickwads? Well? Can you guess? It’s fucking Massachusetts, the fucking center of the gay marriage universe. Yes, that’s right, the state you love to tie around the neck of anyone to the left of Strom Thurmond has the lowest divorce rate in the fucking nation. Think that’s just some aberration? How about this: 9 of the 10 lowest divorce rates are fucking blue states, asshole, and most are in the Northeast, where our values suck so bad. And where are the highest divorce rates? Care to fucking guess? 10 of the top 10 are fucking red-ass we're-so-fucking-moral states. And while Nevada is the worst, the Bible belt is doing its fucking part.
Nope. No northern liberal arrogance in evidence here.
But two guys making out is going to fucking ruin marriage for you? Yeah? Seems like you're ruining it pretty well on your own, you little bastards. Oh, but that's ok because you go to church, right? I mean you do, right? Cause we fucking get to hear about it every goddamn year at election time. Yes, we're fascinated by how you get up every Sunday morning and sing, and then you're fucking towers of moral superiority. Yeah, that's a workable formula. Maybe us fucking Northerners don't talk about religion as much as you because we're not so busy sinning, hmmm? Ever think of that, you self-righteous assholes? No, you're too busy erecting giant stone tablets of the Ten Commandments in buildings paid for by the fucking Northeast Liberal Elite. And who has the highest murder rates in the nation? It ain't us up here in the North, assholes.
I think it used to be Detroit but is now Washington DC or Baltimore. I could be wrong though.
Well this gravy train is fucking over. Take your liberal-bashing, federal-tax-leaching, confederate-flag-waving, holier-than-thou, hypocritical bullshit and shove it up your ass.
Unfortunately, it's not over. If the federal government released their stranglehold on the states and ended these programs to which you so angrily refer, they'd no longer be able to tell the southern states what they can teach their kids, what they can allow in their courtrooms or in what fashion they may protect their families and homes. It wasn't the south that labored for a century to turn the federal government into an omnipotent and uncontrollable behemoth. It was the north. And it was the left.

Thats what I was trying to say/do. But I didn't stop to figure out how to quote just one part of a post. And, my hot head got away from me there for a minute. I was so pissed, I couldn't think of George Washington, or Madison, and I was talking about George Washington College, just a few minutes before I posted my feeble manifesto. If I had been talking, not typing, I may have gotten my point across better.
take care
