View Full Version : My Nassau recap...

PRESHOW STUFF:
i got to Nassau Coliseum around 6:45. I was hoping to get their earlier, but it was rush hour, plus the weather and driving conditions were horrible. Still, I was able to find a nice space to squeeze into right in the front and center of the stage (Thank you to the girl nice enough to give me room). A much nicer spot than my floor seat at MSG where I couldn't see anything.
The dog show was so adorable! Those dogs are crazy or must have some kind of death wish. One dog went over to the side of the stage and licked a security guard's face. A few people in the audience were concerned for the dogs' safety, but as one kid said, "If the Beasties endorse it, it must be okay."
Talib Kweli was awesome. I'm compelled to get some of his music now. I was getting my dance on the entire time. After his set, one security guard joked about my dancing and pretty much started sexually harassing me. He said the way I bounced up and down was going to distract him from watching the crowd, and told me I better put my jacket back on. The cool people to the left of me joked that I should create a diversion so they can jump over the barrier.
BEASTIES:
The screen above the stage showed MIx Master Mike walking throughout the Coliseum to the stage. There was a Pet Expo at the Coliseum earlier in the day. Mix Master Mike was carrying a mini crocodile from the Expo, but he didn't bring it up with him on stage.
The Beasties opened with "No Sleep Til Brooklyn"! I've never seen them do that song live... I didn't think they did it any more! That was awesome!
They were wearing light blue Adidas suits that had dark blue on the sleeves and other places. Mike D. wore a dark blue trucker hat that said "Mike D." on it. The other Beasties had light khaki hats with no names on it.
I didn't notice the Beasties messing up lyrics or getting lost like they've been doing in the recent past.
During Paul Revere, MCA came out into the area between the stage and the pit. I touched his hand as he walked by! I bragged about this in a text message to this guy I like after the show. He texted me saying his cousin is hanging out with the Beasties tomorrow (Saturday), because his cousin works for the "Chappelle Show", and they're filming something for it. Speaking of "Chappelle Show", I noticed Adrock yelling out "WHAT?!?!?" a lot.
Pretty much everybody around me had been taped earlier outside the show for that segment where they show clips of fans on the stage screeN. 4 people on my left, 2 people on my right, one girl behind me... they were all featured. The video segment also showed clips of the Beasties before the show, having fun at the Pet Expo. MCA had a parrot on his head in one clip. In another, they had various signs with Beastie song titles written on them, and they had a cat walk up and put his paws on the song he liked (he chose "Paul Revere").
For the Instrumentals, the Beasties dressed up like a wedding band, on this ministage with many hanging lanterns decorating it. Adrock was acting so spastic the entire time. I thought it was funny during "Lighten Up", when Alfredo the percussionist was playing that weird-sounding instrument. Adrock just stood still, looking confused, and then would start to sporatically, slightly move to the beat.
Doug E. Fresh beatboxed to "Posse in Effect". Him and Money Mark later came out and gave a big trophy to Mix Master Mike for being the MVP.
The Beasties all wore the orange game-title shirts again. Mike D.'s said "Candyland". MCA had "Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots". Adrock had "Buck-Buck". Mix Master Mike had "Operation". Alfredo had "Gin Rummy". Money Mark had "Mousetrap". MCA also wore sunglasses. Mike D. wore these huge-ass glasses that were blingin' all around the rims.
During a few songs, after he presented that trophy, Money Mark chilled in the security guard area between the stage and pit. He twirled a basketball on one finger while someone in that area took a picture. He also laughed when he saw the video camera guy, who was dressed like a pirate. Mark bopped back and forth to "So Whatcha Want", and then he gave a cellophane-wrapped cupcake to Mike D. Mike later tossed the cupcake back to Mark, who gave the cupcake to the girl next to me on my left.
"So Whatcha Want" was really cool, because they had these mini cameras at the front of the stage, arranged in an arc. The Beasties would jump up high in front of the arc, which would capture their image midair and display it Matrix-style on the stage screens.
Towards the end of the show, the Beasties joked we had to all be cleared out soon, because a roller disco was going on in the Coliseum afterwards. They mentioned a whole bunch of Long Island places. They joked there would be an afterparty off the Northern State Parkway at some place (I think it was called "Scoogies"? Something like that), then said it was off of Northern Blvd instead. Then Mike D. started cracking up when he said it was in the town of Massepequa (I guess the name was funny sounding to him).
For the encore, they did Intergalactic, out in the audience, in the center area of the Coliseum floor. They went back on stage and did "Gratitude" and "Sabotage" (the latter dedicated to everybody's favorite president). Money Mark is crazy during "Sabotage"; At one point, he pretty muched jumped onto his keyboard. Afterwards, Mike D. threw his drum sticks to a boy 2 people away from me on my right. MCA pretended to throw his bass to the audience.
Some remixes I heard:
- "Root Down" with the freeze-posing "Apache" music (they always seem to do this mix).
- "Pass The Mic" with Snoop Dogg's "Drop It Like It's Hot" beat (I love that beat! It's so minimal).
- "Intergalactic" with Lil' Kim's "The Jump Off".
- "Brass Monkey" with Missy Elliott's "Pass That Dutch" and Nina Sky's "Move Your Body".
In the end, an awesome, awesome show. My body hurts now... my neck is killing me. I was pretty much packed like sardines in a tin...

lil add on to your review 1 2 - captin hook was filming them during the intergalatic encore. i got the feeling the bboys got caught up in the show and kinda lost time. they were rushing the enocore a lil, and the house lights even came on at one point after intergalatic before they ended the show. they seemed to be havin a great time. last show of the tour kinda thing. MVP trophy to MMM was great and doug E Fresh was very unexpected. and lets not forget bout NO SLEEP. many props to strong island esp during open letter which was great too after livin out there my whole life. everyone who says the crowd wasnt good isnt ass backwards, people were bein friendly dancin havin a great time. and even though it wasnt sold out it was off the hook either way. just my 2 cents. later.

crowd was great, energy was great.
yeah, the crowd really reacted to the "since 9/11...." line, maybe even more than at MSG. it felt like we were at a going away party, they were bringing all the punches

Awesome show! I got my gen. adm. ticket on ebay wed. nite. I drove for 5 1/2 hrs. from Boston alone in the rain, snow and rush hour traffic to see the Boys end this tour. As the first chords of "No Sleep Till BKLYN" rang out I knew it was worth it. Never heard that one before, and I've been seeing 'em since 1992 (first time was at Avalon in Boston about a month before Check Your Head was out). Doug E. Fresh on "Posse in Effect", plus "Pass the Mic"...I am so psyched that they kept it really old skool for the last show of the tour. Cheers to the security for turning a blind eye to all the cheeba cheeba being passed around. :D And Mix Master deserved that MVP trophy.
I drove back in the snow right after the show, making several pit stops I got in at 6am. An all-nighter that was definitely worth it.

The show was super awsome. Man NO sleep and pass the MIC!! I was at msg and philly too. This was a little better than philly, and much better than msg. MMM getting that trophy was really was cool I think. The Boys are so funny man. I was real close to them when they did Intergalactic. I was the big guy with the striped white shirt. The only stupid thing was some tough guys were fighting in the pit like a couple of children. I guess some people just never grow up.

It was a good show.
Long Isand was representing as only Long Isladers could, ie: someone's out of shape mother with a she's crafty t-shirt, feather roach clip ear rings, and knee high leather fringe boots.
Yauch's overclocking his bass, during Gratitude and Sabotage my balls were vibrating; I had to check to make sure one of those mongrels from the pet show didn't crawl up my leg.

I seen a lot of kids and their parents. Oh man that bass made my body go into shock or something. I was still shaking from the after effects. I was right at the speakers. Still had a great time. :)

<tear> It makes me sad to know that I was going to go to this show, but then couldn't...I was going to be in pit...ugh...
Too bad I missed No Sleep Till Brooklyn... anyways I want to see what other great songs I missed  ,so I'm going to check these other threads for a setlist while moaning in grief to your stories....

Thanks for the appreciaton, people. :) Another thing I thought was cool was there were a lot of hardcore female Beastie fans around me. I remember a board member complaining about the MSG show, how most of the girls in the audience seemed like they were dragged there by their boyfriends. At Nassau, all the girls around me were rapping along to every lyric.

the "Shes Crafty" mom was right next to me on the floor.
i gotta give it to her, her and her friend were groovin the whole pagaent, the other one was alternating between a halo and devils horns.
two girls sucking lollipop ringpop lights started jumping all over me during all lifestyles, perhaps they were on ecstasy?
my pants were falling off by the end of the night, i had no belt and i was covered in sweat, during Intergalactic the floor opened up and everyone just started DANCING! thats when i made my move to the very front.
the video was hysterical too, they had some 10 year olds come out and request eggman, and sure enough adrock gave em what they wanted, they had a cat choose which song they were playing, and Pauli gave a big shout...

I saw the girls with Lollipop rings. I'm a tall mofo (wore my brown corduroy stetson hat), so right after the one of the latter songs one of the girls asked to stand in front of me, so I said sure. Of course, she then dragged up three more of her friends, but it was cool because I still had room to shake my rump, plus being 6'7" (don't hate me if you're 5'4") I can pretty much see over anyone. I just go up front because that's where the good sound and the crazy energy is.
I also loved the part where the kittie chose what song to play for later and she chose "Paul Revere". Does anybody remember some of the other choices that they had written out on those cards (this was all on the videoscreen, obviously)? I know that "Egg Man" was also one of them.
Near the tunnel exiting the Gen adm. area there was a family with three kids wearing hats like the Beasties wore that had MCA, Ad Rock, and Mike D. written on them. That was damn cute. I think it's cool that maybe a lot of these parents get their kids into the B-Boys. (y)
Was anybody a little bummed that when MMM started cutting in new beats to "So Whatcha Want" that he never eventually went back to that killer guitar riff in the chorus? Minor note, but overall I love his changes!!
Still reeling, half conscious after six hours of sleep.

hey 1 2 Oh My God, thanks for the recap...
the only things i remember were Horovitz giving me full-on eye contact and finger point during the "Yo baby! What's up?" line of Brass Monkey and shaking Yauch by the hand...BY THE HAND FFS! the rest is like a dream...
i was also one of the girls interviewed up on the big screen so it sounds like we were quite close ;)
p.s. been a BB fan for a good decade now...can't believe this is my first post here! hello all....

The she's crafty chick was funny as hell, I had the people with the "eys wide shut" masks on right next to me and some REALLY drunk sweaty guy in a red shirt. There was this super cute lil blonde in a suede jacket, holdin a blue long sleeved beastie t-shirt. She was with a friend that was a lil brunette, any see her hotness??
The two black chicks that were next to me in the beginning looked shocked at all the craziness all the white boys and gals were up too. Way to represent people.
Worth the trip in the rain from Philly!!!!

its officially my least favourite beastie boy song. from the first time i heard it, i kinda thought it was whack. i like the fatboyslim remix a lot more. i just think it would be nice if the song wasnt a "set in stone" track for the live shows.....just sayin

Oh, LOL, I thought you were mad at me for asking. :o Sorry for the misinterpretation.
I find it to be a cool song, not my fave though. I wonder why they always play it. Wonder what the reason for that is.

Anyone see the guido with the fever t-shirt on? :D
Not sure. Where were you standing? Don't remember a fever shirt, but did see a good amount of guidos.
Someone was shouting out "pigtails" to me because of the pigtails I had from my outfit. I wonder who it was. I guess I was pretty noticeable.

I was at the MSG and Nassau shows, and they were both insane !! I didn't dress to impress for the Madison show but me and my boy rocked it out for Nassau. If you click the link there are some great shots of the show, the pics were taken from Section 102 Row E, so if you were around there maybe your in a couple. On the second page of pics you can see me and my boy on the video from the show, the one that they aired with all the requests. We dressed up like the Intergalatic Video, it was mad tight, had a blast ! (y) (y)
