I promised my friend a playlist of power pop from the 70s. I had a lot of ideas, but I lost my list and now I'm having a brain freeze. It has to be totally catchy, full of hooks, and not too hard rocking or disco-y. For sure, I want:
The Sweet - Ballroom Blitz
The Cars - My Best Friend's Girl
The Runaways - Cherry Bomb
some Cheap Trick
probably ELO
maybe some Billy Squier (although that's leaning toward the rock end)
and I'm thinking The Knack - My Sharona, even though that's eeking over into 1980.

If you have any ideas, I'd really appreciate them. They can be cheesy/bad. I had hoped for more one-hit wonders.

I had completely forgotten that Laughing song! And Thin Lizzy! And where in the heck will I get my hands on Hocus Pocus?

So I'd never heard of the Head East song mentioned, so I looked up the band and learned that Head East (biggest hit, I think is There's Never Been Any Reason?) is featured on "20th Century Masters." Now, I've noticed those collections on the end caps at Best Buy, but when I think 20th Century Masters, I think Ink Spots perhaps, not Head East!

I asked my mom who sang that song the other day. She didn't know, and its been one of those nagging things in the back of my mind since then.

I found two Focus LPs for cheap today. So I'm listening to Hocus Pocus and it made me think of this thread.

And if anyone has any more ideas, bring it on.

Good stuff in there! Suzi Quatro is mostly known here for being on the sitcom Happy Days. I can't think of the name of her one hit here but I think it was huge when I was a rollerskating teen. :)

My mom is 80. She's losing it. She told me she loves that song that goes "takin care of business-- every day!"

This woman hated all my music growing up. But now she thinks every classic rock song is a "real toe tapper".

You're safe with that one, since it came out in 1979. (y)

Here are some others:

Boston - More Than a Feeling
The Cars - Just What I Needed
T. Rex - Bang a Gong
The Guess Who - American Woman
Three Dog Night - Never Been to Spain/Joy to the World
Supertramp - Give a Little Bit
King Harvest - Dancing in the Moonlight
Queen - We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions

Good suggestions!

Yeah, I was looking for Thin Lizzy at the used stores this weekend. I own most of the rest of Miramanee's, so that's good. And while the Lipps Inc thing isn't power pop, it's a favorite in my driving playlist.

I really do need the Boston one. And where will I find Dancing in the Moonlight? That takes me back to the radio of my childhood. Why doesn't itunes have that kind of stuff?

Yeah, it sucks that iTunes doesn't have Dancing in the Moonlight. They do have Boston though.

(Not that I've ever checked, or anything. ;) )

For Queen fans, power pop fans......and the oh-so-cool people :D who are into surround music, this is a great choice:

A Night At The Opera 30th Anniversary CD + DVD package (http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=6988915&style=music&cart=290926544&BAB=M)

Calling the dvd just a "bonus" doesn't do justice to what that dvd contains. The commentary tracks are supposed to be excellent & feature pretty much all the band members, including Freddy Mercury; there are videos for every track; and the surround mixes are some of the best ever done for any band (note: these mixes aren't for music "purists" i.e. there is stuff happening all over the place > left/right front & left/right REAR. Surround music can be a really polarizing issue i.e. you either love it [that's me!] or it drives you nuts).

The following excerpt is from a lengthy article from Queenonline.com (http://queenonline.com/index2.php?section=4&feature=16):

As Queen guitarist Brian May explains in the new liner notes: "Months of craftsmanship by true perfectionists have gone into wringing every ounce out of the original master recordings and into this hitherto unequalled 'high definition' domain. Never has the recording been so carefully balanced, so carefully cleansed of clicks and pops from so many sources, some of which were even present on the original mix master tapes. In the stereo sound on this DVD, every nuance of the analogue character of these human-made mixes is more faithfully reproduced here than ever before. In addition, for the surround track, a whole set of 5.1 mixes has been created from microscopically accurate digital sound files, mirroring the original multitrack tapes. For the first time this includes a new surround mix of the final track 'God Save the Queen', and some improvements to the surround mixes previously issued to a small audience on the DTS DVD-Audio release*."

...............Simon Lupton, who co-produced the DVD, explains the painstaking process behind the making of the new videos for the album: "We decided to use footage from concerts that were filmed as close to that era as possible. The concert footage you see here is mainly from Earls Court and Houston in 1977. Both concerts were filmed but, for various reasons, never made available commercially."

* technically speaking, if you want the very best sound, you need to grab the dvd-audio version (http://www.dtsonline.com/entertainment/catalogue/music.php?upc=692860109193) of this album which came out three years ago (except for "God Save The Queen", the surround mixes for the dvd above come from this disc). Obviously you'll need a dvd-audio player to hear that high resolution sound, like this $130 Panasonic model (http://www2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/vModelDetail?displayTab=O&storeId=15001&catalogId=13401&itemId=69528&catGroupId=24988&modelNo=DVD-F87K&surfModel=DVD-F87K&cacheProgram=11002&cachePartner=7000000000000005702) (they helped design the dvd-audio format) >>> And the disc also includes a hi-res stereo (96kHz/24bit) track that ANY dvd player can play. But if all you have is a regular dvd-video player, you can still hear the crazy surround mix by using the disc's DTS track which still sounds very good. Also, if you own one of the latest Acuras (the TL or the RL), & certain Infinitis or Cadillacs that come with a dvd-audio player you can listen to this disc while driving. (y)

BTW: there is also a dvd-audio surround version of The Game. (http://www.dtsonline.com/entertainment/catalogue/music.php?upc=692860111097)

Queen are possibly the worst band ever.

From here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_(band)):

They have sold an estimated 190 million records around the world and, in their home country of Britain, remain second only to The Beatles in terms of sales and collectability (though in 2005, they actually exceeded the number of weeks spent on the British chart by The Beatles).
I'm not trying to be argumentative because album sales #s definitely don't always translate to quality, so am just throwing in an FYI; and I personally own none of their albums though I usually listened when their stuff got played on the radio (I'm using the past tense because I almost never listen to the radio anymore).

I enjoy Queen in small doses. A bunch of their songs give me super vivid flashbacks to crazy teenage times.

I actually just googled the lyrics... lo and behold, it's called "Any Way You Want It."

Well if that wasn't obvious enough. So yeah, include Journey on your set.

Has Aerosmith been mentioned? "Walk This Way", "Sweet Emotion," "Dream On" et al would fit your theme, I'm sure...
