Last fry I went to see Graham Coxon. It was a lovely evening.. and pretty long though. Here what happened before, during and after the show, full of details!

Before I went there I heard only the latest album (happiness in magazines) plus the Blur songs. And of course the Triple Trouble Remix he made.
I had not many big expectations, but I was looking for a good concert, because I think he’s a great musician, he toured a lot all around the world and also because I like his cd.
Three bands performed that night. In order: Timid Tiger (they tour with Graham), The Girls (a band from Seattle) and then Coxon. Coxon and The Girls had been booked by two different promoters.
I arrived at the venue at 10.30pm and The Girls were performing. I lost the Timid Tiger :(
I saw most of the two concerts from the bar. In this venue, close to the bar there’s a corner with two doors: one for the backstage and the other one for the baths. It’s a strategic place.. and I spent most of the time alone (as I like to do during the concerts), except when I met my friend Alberto (he’s a songwriter-lofi style that just got a contract: I was sure to meet him there) and a photographer (I will post his pics when I will receive them). It’s also the place where the musician stand to watch the other concerts. So I met a couple of members from The Girls (we talked a lot.. about anything: music, concerts, countryside. Nice people even I didnt like their performance because I have different taste).

The main concert started. The club is for 900 people and I think there were 600-700 people at least: not that bad. It had been pretty long: it started between 12.30 and 11.45 pm and it finished at 1 am.
I supposed he’d like to perform most of the songs from happiness in magazines and only for 1hr or so. But most of the songs were unknown for me and they were more rock and less pop that I expected.
The first songs were Spektakular and No Good Time: two of my fav songs! So the beginning wasn’t cold at all. Then he performed many songs I never heard before that I think are from the previous albums. Bittersweet was awesome!! At the end he performed Freakin Out and was just great!
Graham drunk all the time a Red Bull and he performed without his glasses (he said he lost them.. but then I saw him with glasses!).

He has a really strong english accent, he was wearing jeans and a blue tshirt. Sometimes he was not able to see very good the setlist (that I had), so he swatted to see it better! Funny!!
Then, between two songs, he asked to the audience: “how did you come here?”. Any clear answer. He said: “so you are just here. How did you come here” Most said: “Car” (someone said airplane, skateboard) then he said: “oh, you came here with your own vehicle. That’s correct”. Everybody laugh because of the accent. But at the end of the show he said: “have a safe come back with your own vehicle”. Nice!
And guess what? Due to my strategic position close to the bar, before the encore I saw him going to the bath and smoking a cigarette.. hilarious!!

Btw, after the shows usual the venue became a rock club and many people come there to dance (also because on fry it’s free entry!). Some friends jointed me, but when I was waiting for them I went to the bath and it was almost a nightmare! So many people with Blur stuff, posters, setlists, cds and so on their hands waiting for him!
I got the setlist (see on the bottom) and I had my triple trouble single with me, so I decide to wait a bit and to go to him for an autograph. Breathe deep.
I met a couple of his musicians before and they signed my setlist. (no the most beautiful musicians.. but so english!)

I waited a bit and I went to him. here what we said.
We were in front of the door for the backstage.
laura: “Ciao!”
graham: (no words: he just looked me.. with glasses. He’s a bit taller than me. I am 170 cm)
laura: “here I have setlist. Please could you kindly sign it?”
graham: “sure!”
laura (when he was signing it): “I know you made a remix..”
graham: “what?” (music loud, italian vs english accent)
laura: “A remix”
graham: “oh, a remix. of who?”
laura: “of the Beastie Boys”
graham: “oh, yeah!”
laura: “and here I have a copy of the cd single. Do you mind to sign it?”
graham: “no, no. it’s ok. I still didnt see it”
laura: “I have it in my bag”
(I gave it to him he smiled looking at the cover. It’s this one (http://www.alataza.com/beastieboys/tripletroubleukvideo.jpg))
laura: “did you ever meet them?”
graham: “yeah, I met them several ages ago”
laura: “Cool!”
I was so nervous (just consider that the Blur always been my fav brit-pop band when I was 13-14..)
laura: “I am going to see them next mount here in italy..”

He signed the cover and he looked at the cd still smiling. Now I’ve his autograph on Sasquatch’s white sheet and the three beasties with an aureole up each their head.
I had so many things to say and many questions in my head (is it true you’ve a cat called bastard? I really agree with the idea of “happiness in magazines”. I had been a blur fan I like country house video and many others..) but I was so nervous that I just made the same question I usual do when I met people from other countries:
laura: “how many languages do you speak?”
god: I didn’t know his daughter is half Swedish.
I think that’s all.

ps: to all the girls: be carefull to his staff. Some people had not been nice, even I hope it was a joke. Instead of Graham: he had been really really nice!
pps: fucking expensive merchandising!
Pps: all the bands left the club quite early at 2 am I think. when I was asking to the dj a beastie boys song and he did it (Body Movin – FBS remix)! Amazing! Usual they never accept requests!!! (I came back home at 4 am)
