View Full Version : Best Concert You Went To In 2004

I figure it's not too early for this list. I went to a ton of concerts this year but I expect no good national acts coming in December.

My best all-around good time was actually Beasties at MSG.

For other national concert tours, I would chose either Richard Thompson, or what was apparently Prince's last ever concert (my best friend is his biggest fan--she stalked him for 20+ years--and we were 6th row center and she was crying).

My strangest moment was at Rufus Wainwright, when I threatened another audience member with violence--so not like me, but she deserved it.

My most surprising good time was probably Van Halen. I tagged along with a friend on a whim, was initially put off by the almost-all-male, clearly suburban, relivin-their-high school-memories crowd. But they were actually a lot of fun once the show started. The tickets were waaaaay too expensive, but after a few $10 cocktails, I even purchased a $35 t-shirt stating "Van Halen kicks ass." So far, I've only worn it to a friend's bar-b-que.

I saw the Beasties, and that's it.

I hate leaving my place for any reason whatsoever, but considering it's the Beasties here... well, I didn't want to wait 6 more years...

PRINCE

Completely agree with you, Mike. Prince is definitely an entertainer. No one can compare. I enjoyed all the concerts I went to this year, not a single one was bad. Was great to see Sting 3 times this year, finally saw the Cure and they rocked, and the Beasties were amazing. But if I were to have to pick only one concert, Prince is at the top of the list.

I could say straight away that Captain Murphy at Mosebacke rocked my socks off! Seen them five times this year and will see them again on the 18th.

I was gonna make a list of all the bands I've seen this year (not as many as usual), but without checking my diary other good ones I've seen this year are BRMC in London, Pixies at Hultsfred, Mattias Alkberg at Hultsfred, Solution at Hultsfred, Ed Harcourt in Sthlm, Backyard Babies several times, Infinite Mass, Division of Laura Lee, MC5 and of course the Beasties' promo gig in Stockholm.

the special show at the 9:30 club in DC-------(the beasties that is) so small, and crucial and the first time I had seen em since 95.

second choice would be Roots. Always love seein them live........

third: Rob Wonder (dj from Atlanta) at a club in Michigan

Last night I saw Carl Denson and it was a tight show. They made a recording of the performance so if anyone wants some killer Louisiana funk check out their disk from the Grand Rapids, Michigan show Dec 5, 2004. (y)

Was Bob Dylan really good, or was it just cool to see him? I have been disappointed by his shows. Usually the sound sucks and you can barely tell what song he's playing. I always wonder if he just thinks he doesn't have to try.

he impressed me at yale Field this summer, but I know what you mean. his show at the Garden in 2002 wasnt anything special.

this summer though he was energetic and he really played the shit out of his harmonica, which i enjoyed.

his newer tracks from Love and Theft are good and as for his classics, its like he does covers of his OWN songs, he was definitely putting different spins on the songs and freshened them up a bit.

also it was at Yale Field on a summer tour and i was right next to the stage, not 20 feet from the man himself.

heres the setlist from the show
1. Maggie's Farm
2. Watching The River Flow
3. Tell Me That It Isn't True
4. Lonesome Day Blues
5. Just Like A Woman
6. Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dum
7. Love Sick
8. Highway 61 Revisited
9. Ballad Of Hollis Brown
10. Honest With Me
11. It Ain't Me, Babe
12. Summer Days

13. Mr. Tambourine Man
14. Like A Rolling Stone
15. All Along The Watchtower

That does sound great! I liked Time Out of Mind a lot--I had pretty much written him off before that. I might have to give him another chance.

I think part of the problem is that when he comes back to Minnesota, he plays big, crappy venues and if feels like about half the crowd came because they thought it was the thing to do, and they're not familiar with a lot of the music. If that makes any sense. My friend saw him last time he was in town, and she actually said she didn't like his music, but thought she should see him once in her life. A bad or good crowd can really contribute to my experience at a concert.

You obviously have never seen Prince before then. A lot of other board memebers would agree with me on this one. The Prince show was by far the best concert of my entire life. The man is a true entertainer. Don't get me wrong, I love my BBoys. I have seen them 3 times and plan to see them every chance I get! The BBoys are just a whole different vibe. Prince is amazing live.

Well, I see that you are a huge Beasties fan, but that's a pretty bold statement! In your realm of fantasy, I'd take a band I never got to see, like Led Zeppelin, or a band I didn't see until too late, like Earth Wind and Fire.

There is no comparison in my mind between Beasties and Prince. Completely different music, vibe, audience. Prince is a much better musician, but Beasties are more fun. I saw both multiple times this year and enjoyed both.

And frankly, I'd take two hours of Foo Fighters over one song of Beasties. :)
