Im so not good with the knifes. Ive taken 1/2 a finger tip off due to my lack of skill. Any tips on chopping, and what not?
Ciao!

1: keep them sharp. Dull knives cause more injuries than sharp ones.

2: quality counts. Knives can be very expensive and so understandably, not everyone can buy a full set of top-quality. However, for the average person, you are far far better off splashing out on one good quality all-purpose kitchen knife (and keeping it sharp as per rule 1) than spending the same amount on a set. At any proper cutlery retailer, they should have a salesperson on hand who knows their stuff and can advise you on the best choice for you for your budget and cooking style.

3: keep your fingers curled. For example, let's say you are cutting an onion, Rather than hodling it down with the pads of your fingers, hold it down with your fingertips. (This may take some practice.)

4: practice.

If you have a local community colege that has a culinary school/catering division, see if they perhaps offer short courses (like a weekend / 1 evening per week kind of thing) in basic kitchen and food prep skills - many do offer these sorts of mini-courses for the general public at a relatively low cost.

anyone know where i can get some decent knives?

we have 3 in the apartment, and 2 of them are about 2 inches long and not serated, and the other one is pretty beat.

are those guys who do the commercials actually selling a half decent product?

I buy Henckels knives (Pro S series):

But any good quality high carbon stainless-steel knife will do...start by getting a chief's knife.

p.s. Amazon sells them if you can't buy them locally.

Henckels knives Pro S series

If you have some extra dough, ($200+) these are worth it.

Good for life.
