As far back as I can remember I have been afraid of clowns.

My mom didn't help things when she made me dress up like a clown for a parade. I remember trying to make myself believe I was in Kiss so I wouldn't totally lose it.

^^ My brother knew that that movie kinda creeped me out when we saw it the first time...So the next day, I had just got home from school and went to my room and when I opened the door there was a red balloon floating right in font of me. Sick.

My worst fear is to be walking through a forrest by myself on a cloudy day and see a clown standing nearby out of the corner of my eye. That and drowning in cold dark water. Anyways...

You would not be freaked out by IT anymore if you read the book. It's pretty creepy up untill the end where they battle the spider and then a turtle which apparently represents God shows up. Stephen King has the most shite endings.

When I was three, I had these two giant posters of clowns in my room, and they scared me to death. I never went in there, much less slept in my own bed.

Yes. I always have and still hate clowns. We had a copy of _It_, the Stephen King book and on the book's spine was a small photo of the story's evil clown. I hated that spine--when the book was on our bookshelf, I could see the clown and I thought about it whenever I walked into that room. So, I put a band-aid over the photo. The only kind of band-aid we had was a Batman one, but it worked.

The first clown in your clown montage is nasty.

I just read the rest of this thread and saw the other It references.

Stephen King books are usually like that--he writes about silly things that couldn't happen in reality, but somehow, the way he writes about them usually scare/d me.

And even though the story of It was pretty lame, the idea of the clown and the drawing of him on the cover of the book was enough for me. Even the "happy" clowns get me--I don't like them regardless of what they're doing or how they're painted.

Probably the only clown that really bothers me is that dude. Seriously. But, there is something about them that weirds me out. I wouldn't say I'm scared of them, but they do weird me out a little bit.

my sicko brother did something similar to me, ok not strickly clown related, but i wanted to share anyway

when i was little i had a doll that had ginger hair, it had a resemblence to chucky from childs play, and for some stupid reason i watched childs play, it shit me up, so to calm me down my brother put my doll, sitting up, on my pillow with a knife next to it and put red colouring in pen on the wall. I was looking for the cellotape so he told me it was upstairs on my bed, i went upstairs and the next thing my family heard was a scream and my bro's laughter

Surgery clowns ease child anxiety Image of clowns

IMG]http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/40867000/jpg/_40867718_clownsbbc.jpg[/IMG]
Clown antics are an acquired taste for some

An Italian study shows having clowns in the operating room can ease anxiety - at least among child patients.

Clowns successfully distracted children aged five to 12 years while they were put under anaesthesia for surgery.

But their clowning around annoyed most medical staff - who were concerned it interfered with normal working protocols, says a report in Pediatrics.

A charity that provides "clown doctors" said it had found hospital staff were positive about such schemes.

Interacted

Clowns from the Theodora Foundation are active in 89 hospitals around the world, including eight in the UK.

In the study, Laura Vagnoli and colleagues from the Anna Meyer Children's Hospital in Florence assessed the stress levels of 40 children who about to undergo a planned minor operation.

Half of the children interacted with two clowns before entering the operating room and stayed with them and their parent while they were given a general anaesthetic, which took about 15 minutes.

The clowns used magic tricks, gags, puppets and soap bubbles to entertain the children.

Distraction

The other children were only accompanied by a parent with no other distractions before the operation.

Anxiety of the child was measured by staff who looked out for recognised signs of stress. The parents were asked to fill out a survey about their own anxiety during the process.

After the operation, the researchers also asked the operating room staff for their opinions about the experience.

Overall, the children in the clown group appeared to be far less stressed and anxious than the other children. Similarly, their parents were also less anxious.

The medical personnel also noted that the presence of the clowns helped reduce anxiety among the children and parents.

Mixed views

However, few of the staff said they would continue to use clowns in their operating theatres because they were concerned that their presence interfered with the routine of the preoperative room.

The doctors and nurses said they thought that the clowns delayed procedures and interfered with the relationship between medical personnel and the child.

The researchers did not measure whether these concerns were supported by longer operating times, but they said it would be worth investigating.

A lot of it is about making absolutely sure that you do get the medical team onside
Sue Hind-Woodward, executive director of Theodora Foundation

They said: "We would encourage the promotion of this form of distraction therapy for children requiring surgery.

"The resistance of medical personnel to this kind of therapy could be dealt with better by providing information regarding the benefit of the therapy to children and by investigating whether the presence of clowns during anaesthesia induction slows the process in a significant manner."

Sue Hind-Woodward, executive director of the Theodora Foundation, said: "In the UK, our clown doctors do not go into the preoperative room where the anaesthetic is being administered, but some are there when children are given their premeds before surgery.

"The clowns are excellent. They do help children relax, particularly when they are having procedures that they do not like."

She said UK medical staff had been "very receptive and supportive" of such schemes.

However, she said they had heard about some anecdotal reports from Italy where staff were less receptive.

"A lot of it is about making absolutely sure that you do get the medical team onside.

"We make sure we fall in with the medical, ethical and hygiene guidelines and conform."

I can't stop myself from looking at this thread now. Damn me for bumping it.

A couple of weekends ago, I had to go to long training sessions at a place that had a big parking lot outside. In that lot for the duration of the training was a classic car show. They had clowns. I don't understand the relationship.

They were old-guy scary clowns who smile with their stupid clown lips but the smile doesn't reach their eyes. I know what they say about that--they don't smile hard because they don't want to crease their makeup. I don't buy that.

I was in this training, at a window seat, and the clown station was right outside of where I was sitting and I couldn't keep from watching them. Sort of like this thread--I'd look even though I'd try not to.

Those clowns didn't do clown things. Like they didn't have Harpo horns or do balloon things (which, I think, is the scariest clown antic because the clown deflects the kid's attention to the balloon but while he twists the balloon, he watches the kid).

These class car clowns stood around. The one tapped his foot and he had the dumb black floppy shoes. The other one ate nearly constantly and it's weird to see a clown eating. The third one would turn his back to the cars and people and he'd smoke. (!)

Aside of the photos here (especially ^^^), what more proof do you need that clowns are evil.

'Therapeutic clowning' boosts IVF
By Caroline Ryan
BBC News, Prague

Sending in the clowns can significantly increase the chances that fertility treatment will be a success, Israeli researchers have found.

The team looked at women undergoing embryo transfers, where an IVF embryo is put into the womb.

Just over a third of women entertained by a clown conceived, compared to 19% of a group who were not, a European fertility conference heard.

Experts said helping patients relax was the key to increasing conception rates.

The research was carried out by Dr Shevach Friedler at the Assaf Harofeh Medical Centre in Zerifin.

Dr Friedler, who attended a movement and mime school in France before he entered the medical profession, said he knew fertility patients became stressed - and that laughter could reduce stress.

And he pointed out that clowns were often used to help children who were in hospital feel better.

Comedy cook

The team studied 186 women aged 25 to 40 over 10 months, all of whom were undergoing embryo transfer treatment.

Half were simply given the treatment and nothing else.

However, the other group were entertained by a clown for up to 15 minutes as they recuperated in bed after the treatment.

Of the 93 who did not receive the "clown-treatment", just 18 fell pregnant, compared to 33 of the 93 who did.

Dr Friedler said the team had needed to devise an adult-friendly clown: "A clown with a red nose is fine for children, but we had to invent a new character for these adult women."

The character they devised was a chef called Shlomi Algussi, who uses magic tricks and jokes to make women laugh.

Dr Friedler said: "The response form the women was wonderful."

But he added it was not something all clinics would be able to introduce.

"For medication, you can get the patient to pay, but who is going to pay for clowns?"

Dr Mark Hamilton, chairman of the British Fertility Society, said: "Humour is recognised as an antidote to stress, although it is not prescribed on the NHS.

"But clinicians need to be sensitive to the effects of emotions and the psychological pressures on couples.

"It's an important part of care which should be part of medical practice."
