So: disclaimer disclaimer caveat excuse excuse rationalization, disclaimer.

No, actually. The arts group I meet with had a field trip today. The thing was to go to the botanical garden at Tilden Park in Berkeley and take pictures or sketch. Basically an excuse to get the blood flowing.

I din't feel much like sketching (it was damp and overcast), but I think I got one photo that rocks, a couple of good photos, and another okay photo, and about 50 from bad to okay. I wish I had a real camera, because the vivid color of some of the manzinita was great. You won't see any of those shots here, though.

Anyway:

That's very cool.

Is "By Night" natural, or did you do some image editing? It's striking.

wow, nice photos (y)

Gracias!

no pics of you david :(

No -- I didn't think about taking pictures people in the park. Oops. That might have been a missed opportunity.

I'm a botanic garden -geek! Those places look really like something I'd like to visit!

The horticulturist in me wants to know the latin names of these, but guess ordinary people don't take pics of the signs or take notes

Actually, I almost did take pictures of the signs.

Maybe I'll go back sometime, and take a tripod. But, anyway -- there were dozens of types of manzanita, and some were labelled rare, some were labelled rare and endangered.

..I know one was called a Silver Leaf something manzanita, but I don't think that's one which is in my photos.

Wow! Thanks David!
Unbelievable what you can learn when visisting Beastie-forum!
Manzanita is a protected wood. It is illegal to cut or burn it. Hard burgundy red wood from chaparral brush area & very abundant in California.
It belongs to the same family (Ericaceae) as heather, that grows wildly in Scandinavia and other parts of the northern hemisphere. The flowers look very similar.

...there was another picture I might have to go back and take, if I could find the same tree again... the way I framed the limb (and the contour of the limb itself) looked like a angry duck or something.

But I was too close, and they blurred. (n)
