Hey you guys,
I was looking through my Beastie collection and I found this old issue of Rolling Stone - I did a search on it and I did'nt see it posted on this board yet (although I could be wrong - would'nt be the 1st time) so I decided to scan it (which was a major pain in the ass - since it's so long and the pages are too freakin big to fit on the scanner so i had to scan half pages at a time but then I couldnt get the scans the same size to match them up so I had to settle for one where a little of the words got cut off etc...you get the idea - oh do I have a headache ) But I love you guys so I did'nt mind.
so if you like the article can I get some love y'all.

I remember that radio-show mentionned in the interview.
It was on national radio Studio Brussels and the Boys were playin some of their favorite tunes like:
"who's gonna take the weight" by Kool and the Gang
"Slippin into darkness" by Ramsey Lewis
"Feelin Allright" by Jungle Brothers (Ad said that Done by the forces of nature is one of his all time favorite hiphop albums)
"thankfull and thoughtfull" by Sly and the family stone
The Belgian band, mentionned in the interview was Antwerp based dEUS and the song they played was "worst case scenario" of their debut album.
Adrock was goin on about how "that kid got nice bass-lines"(although it's a zappa sample) and mike keeps sayin that they gotta start giggin in Antwerp, because they got it goin on. (before that the dj also played "fuzzball" a wicked funk gem by the legendary antwerp funk maestros Wizzards of Ooze which led mike to conclude that there's a whole scene happenin in that town)
They were also saying that Kool and the gang was their favorite funk band buggin out on the Raw Hamburger tip. I had it on tape for a while, but I have to start diggin it up.
I have another radio show from the same Ill Com period from dutch radio(villa 65) in which there is this rumour that house of pain were dissin the beasties.
If I find the means and the time I'll post it here someday.
I also attended that gig in the luna theatre in Brussels which was off course truely memorable :)

Fantastic article, Brooklyn Babe! Thank you for posting it. Some of the stuff about Horovitz's mother was really poignant - stuff I had never heard before. I knew he had lost his mother at an early age, but I'd never really read anything about her. It sounds like her death was a real loss.
Also, it was funny to read Yauch thinking Horovitz would have children before he did!

Thanks BB!
I made a T-shirt of that cover!
I got it signed by all as well :D Now there's a little story I could tell you! I met Yauch first, but he didn't wanna sign it cause he'd be just signing autographs all evening (they came to this little club after the gig and me and my friends were totally like  when we saw Mike and Yauch and I took the courage to talk to my main man :D ). I got it signed about a month later in Manchester. (I ain't gonna bore you with more stories now ;) )
I took photos of those pages and still have copies of Yauch and the one with them hanging round the telephone pole in my purse!

No I wasn't mad at all, I just calmly put my pen away. I could totally understand him.
Maybe I should start from the beginning:
10 years, one month and three days ago the Beasties were playing at Globe Annexet in Stockholm. I had a photo pass so I could take pics of Luscious Jackson and the Beasties (I used to take pics for a Finnish music paper). I had to leave the photo pit after the third song and still could worm my way to the front along the barrier. I couldn't get quite in the middle so I couldn't see Yauch at all when he was playing the stand up bass. Sometimes the crowd got a bit wild and my glasses flew away and after that I couldn't see anything but shapes! Later when it got a bit calmer I looked down and I saw something glittering by my feet. I reached down and it was my glasses! The frame was totally bent and one of the lenses was in pieces, but still hanging there! I cleaned them and put them back on.
After the gig I went to this club called Gino cause there was supposed to be somekinda afterparty. I met a few friends there and we were sitting by table and talking about the gig. Suddenly my "kid-brother" told me to turn around, but be calm. I couldn't believe my eyes and it took almost two seconds to make a decision to go and talk to Yauch. He was standing by the staircase leaning against a wall. I went over with a pen in my hand. I asked if he could sign my T-shirt that I'd made. He said he rather wouldn't cause then he'd be standing there signing stuff all evening. I put the pen away and said I was gonna come and see them in London in a months time. He said he'll sign it then. Then he realized he still had his woolly hat on and like a gentleman quickly took it off. I showed him my glasses and told that they got moshed on. He worriedly took me by the arm and asked if I was alright! I said I was fine and stroke him on the belly :D Then Mike quickly went pass rushing down the stairs saying we gotta go now so Yauch excused and we said bye to each other and see you in London!
I went back to my friends, my knees turning to jelly with every step I took and when I sat down asked them "Did you see that?! I talked to him, in a civilized manner!" I couldn't believe I'd done it! Everybody else was looking at me as well, because I hadn't behaved like a crazy fan or anything, even they knew what I was like.
I didn't get a chance to meet them on either of their London gigs (but I could use my photo pass from Stockholm, even tho it was in a different colour!) so I travelled over to Manchester to see them. I got to the venue early so I got a good place at the front. Jon Spencer were supporting and they were great! I could see Yauch watching them from the back so I waved him hello. When the Beasties came on stage I blew him a kiss and he blushed!
Being at the front was a bit too much for me (I've posted a pic earlier of the bruises I got) so half-way to the gig the security had to pull me away. I could see Yauch signaling to someone in their crew to check that I was alright. I think it was AWOL who came to the side of the stage to check when a nurse brought me some water. It was really cooling to lie on that cold floor, but when the intro to Flute Loop started I just bounced up again and one security guy was laughing his ass off! I didn't even try to get to the front I just checked the rest of the gig from the side.
After the gig I waited outside the backdoor (it felt like ages!) and when they finally turned up I asked them to sign my shirt and Yauch said "Oh yeah I did promise you that!" So he remembered me!
I gave them a photoalbum of graffity done in Stockholm the night they played there (someone made an honerary graffity for them on the subway) for which Mike thanked me on a later occation. I told Yauch I was gonna come over for the Glasgow gig and he promised to put me on the guest list.
Of course in Glasgow they couldn't find my name on the list, but I waited calmly on the side until all the queues had finished so they could check properly. There was no use starting a tantrum and I guess that's why they let me in after all even they couldn't find my name (and I showed my old photopass, man that was usefull!). So I took pics again and Yauch slapped my hand from stage :D (can't remember what it's called when it's not high-five). That was maybe the best gig I've seen from the Beasties.
I didn't get a chance to meet anyone there so when I went to Belfast I went looking for the place where they were playing and got there just when they'd done sound checking. I'd brought my records with me so I could finally get them signed. I only met Yauch and Mike, AdRock wasn't there anymore. I told Yauch that they hadn't found my name on the list in Glasgow and the manager happened to hear that and he said I'd been definitively on the list, there'd been an after show pass for me as well! :o They promised to make sure I got a pass for the Belfast gig and to Dublin as well the next evening.
So I got an aftershow pass and after a marvellous gig (I think Yauch was drunk cause he stagedived  ) I went to meet everyone. I'd grabbed a setlist and got it signed by everyone (including $Mark, Hurra and Bobo, and Yauch signed it MCA DRUNK, see beastiemania (http://www.beastiemania.com/gigog/show.php?g=19950309X)), picked up an olive pit that Yauch spat out  , I even met AdRock this time, while he was changing his socks  He said he could put me on the list for Dublin, but I said Yauch had already fixed it.
And guess what!? They couldn't find my name on the list there either! I was there with my ex-boyfriend (who was supposed to be on the list as well) and he got a pissed off about it. He had bought tickets to all of us (his sister came along as well, but she'd gotten a ticket from somewhere else), but then I got in for free and I told him to go and sell the spare tickets and then use one to get in. He went down the pub and got drunk instead. Found him after the gig totally blastered. I wanted to go and say goodbye to the Beasties and thank for the whole tour (they were heading for Israel after that). There was a couple of young boys trying to beg to get backstage, but I just grown-up -calmly walked in (with the little help of my old passes!). I found Hurra and Bobo in a dressing room and they told me the guys were eating in the next building. I found my way there and could say my thanks and goodbyes to them (I rubbed Yauch's tummy again :D ) and then left the building. And I forgot that I had planned to say "May the force be with you" when leaving! Would've made me more memorable!
I haven't had a chance to meet them since, even tho I've followed another tour (but that was festivals only) and seen them a couple other times. I did get a postcard from Yauch tho, when I was seriously ill, and met Mix Master Mike briefly when they played in Stockholm in 1999.
I am seriously pissed off that I couldn't afford to follow this European tour, but I do hope they will come back again.
Now this turned out to be quite long, hope I didn't bore y'all!
And the moral of this story is if you're nice and calm you get better chances to meet and talk to them rather than going all wild and goofy!

1st - thanx for the story - it is just amazing.
I talked to him, in a civilized manner!" I couldn't believe I'd done it! Everybody else was looking at me as well, because I hadn't behaved like a crazy fan or anything, even they knew what I was like.
I had a similar experience when I met my idol - Dave Gahan of Depeche Mode- I have been a DM fan for close to 15 years - I grew up listening to Dave's voice- so when I finally got to meet him - at an autograph signing on March 1, 2004 -I did'nt know how I would react.
I was waiting on line (i was like the 3rd person) and my friend kept saying "now when he walks in don't freak out or start cryin - just remember he is just like any other person. He's just a regular guy."
But I was so anxious/excited/terrified - I was'nt listening. Then it happened - Dave walked in. and you know what up until that moment I thought I was gonna have a heart attack but when I actually saw him I felt this overwhelming calm - like this isn't dave gahan, superstar, rock icon, and sexiest man of all time - it's just Dave the guy whose voice I had been listening to since I was 11. I walked up to him. My hands were shaking. I handed him a dozen red roses and I said: I've been a fan of your music for 15 years - It is such an honor to finally meet you." He said: "you're so sweet." then he signed all the photos I gave him - 3 in total- even though the guard told me before I went up there that he would only sign one. He asked me about my DM photos - how old they were and where I got them etc. I took a million pictures of him and I put my arm around him - I was suprized the photos came out so well since I was shaking so much. It was the best night of my life. I still want to meet Martin Gore (songwriter) of Depeche Mode. He's great. I love the way he writes. His lyrics are so touching, so profound, they are just brilliant. Plus he seems like a really fun guy.
