The beginning of the end for oil
By Adam Porter in Catalunya
"The whole post-war American way of life ended up being centred on the suburb; the nice house with a nice lawn and the picket fence; a nice car in the drive.
"It stopped being about escaping tyranny or finding democracy. Instead, it became about achieving a way of life that was propped up by cheap energy."
Death of a dream
Greene believes the world is entering the beginning of the end of the age of oil, a phase that will affect every aspect of human existance.
Energy dependent nations are
in for a big shake up
"People who have bought into that American dream of an ever-growing lifestyle with ever cheaper goods and services, are going to be the most affected by the changes that are coming."

It is not the energy that overly concerns me. Hydrogen (chemical) power as well as Fusion (again hydrogen based) are becoming more and more workable. The thing that concerns me is the lack of plastic. Wood-panelled space-shuttles anyone? Nice stone-glad PCs?

That's a good point. I suppose there will have to continue to be some sort of ongoing petrolium refinement for that very reason.
Also, granted it will be a difficult process to incorporate alternative fuel sources into the main stream while phasing out the old, in the end what will drive the economies of the oil rich nations that depend on the large exports for survival? And to what end might certain countries go to ensure we continue to use oil as our main source of energy?

A lot of the oil-rich middle-eastern countries are not friendly with the US, or western ways of life. This could be a comfort for some - that they are already happy to disregard the "cult of oil" and get on with their desert-inhabiting shit.

What about carbon fiber? Composites..etc. Not sure how epoxy resin is made thought (if it comes from petroleum). Frankly, I couldn't watch porn on a stone computer. It's just not me.

How are you going to lubricate the machines that produce non-petrol based machines without oil?

Synthetic oils...? Used in performance/racing cars. If I'm reading this correctly fully synthetic oils have no "conventional oil"
In general, fully synthetic motor oils contain non-conventional, high-performance fluids, such as polyalphaolefins (PAOs)

heh, how do you think they are produced without machinery?

People survived 300 years ago without it.
Tell that to the French Aristocracy.

BURN!
We would totally go back to the feudal system. I'm moving to someplace in Africa, unchanged by this time reversal.
