The market was already sinking at the news of this exterrestrial visit, down by 30% the NYStock exchange plummets from 7489 to 3944 in one day. An immediate draft is put in place and more than 4 million US citizens are automatically told they will be thrust into service.

A message is sent from space in regards to the blast, saying the aliens at this time will not be able to visit for fear of their own destruction.

I'm afraid the current leaders of our world are motivated by something other than universal love. They cannot, will not, have not given peace a chance. Another race would have to be intelligent enough to slowly grind the machine to a halt. Otherwise terror and fear will reign. This is how they govern. By the bomb....the current leaders of this planets answer to "peace on earth" is the bomb (http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/index.html).

I dunno--I was thinking while everything wouldn't suddenly turn into paradise most people would sort of.......calm down. Though I'm not sure how less-developed cultures would react.

Though the military establishment would probably be intmidated because obviously this race has faster-than-light (FTL) travel, so our latest technologies would be like a glorified PS2 game in comparison.

Total and utter chaos. The world would be reduced to martial law. The whole international community panics (especially in the west) and does whatever they can to survive, only fighting for themselves, till the bitter, living end.
